The 238 has played everything that I have tried. It plays DVD+RW VR disc very well. My Toshiba can Fast Forward no faster than 8X and not skip. The 238 can Fast Forward at 32x, which is a big help searching Video Recordings. This is a Great Player For The Money.
The dad burn power light is the only annoying thing. |

Region Hack: Accepted, no discs that are region-locked to region other than 1 available for testing.
According to the manufacturer (tech suppt EM), this unit uses the MediaTek 1379.
Burner: Nec ND-2500a, fw: herrie: 2k5107v2b5dl
Nec ND-3500a, fw: LDV1_4
Standard TV, (S-Video)
DVD's
=====
RiData 4x (Ritek G04) burned @8x
RiData 8x (Ricoh-JPN R01-02) bruned @8x-12x
Pal, anamorphic widescreen feature (Seen all the way through):
Both conversions done simultaneously and properly. Playback nearly flawless.
*There are sometimes quarter-second "hiccups" (probably less, not so noticeable unless your anal or a perfectionist like me).
Could be the disc, the burn, etc. The "hiccups" could not be duplicated in the same spot by rewinding and playing back the location. It's likely the higher unofficial speeds since discs burned at rated speeds to seem to exhibit this.
Other media (quick tested): (all @8x)
Fuji 4x (RicohJPN I believe): Fine
Verbatim Digital Movie 4x (MCC): Fine
Other media: (quick)
Philips 2.4x RW: Fine
mp3 DVD: (ISO) not tried yet.
CD's
====
Packet-written CDs: NO
mp3's:
Doesn't recognize most VBR (EAC high qual, using lame: alt-preset standard), only some (perhaps ones whose average is just about a standard bitrate, like 192, or 224). Others are simply not displayed at all in the list of mp3s in that folder/disc/etc.
When it does play VBR's, they play flawlesly.
Navigaton to different folders during playback causes a 1/2 second pause in music.
Recognize and playback miniDVD's semi-properly.
Metallica's Black album (backed-up to Verbatim UltaSpeed CD-RW) plays. Menu navigation functions (unlike my old Apex AD5131 which plays, but only straight through, no navigation possible).
And, like the Apex, the mini-featurette on the disc (the video part) skips and stutters constantly (dont know why, could be I didn't do the backup properly?)
CBR's: 320, only recognized 2 out of 12 songs on one album (nmr).
Perhaps it doesn't have a problem with VBR's per se, but with any high bitrates?
Trying to jump (search button) to a time greater than 5 minutes in a 9 minute song was ignored (The mp3 was VBR; Probably related to improper handling of the VBR's...)
ID3 tags: Not sure. The display shows 14 chr's.
My mp3's have filenames formatted like the tags, so it could be displaying tags, or simply the filenames.
Doesn't seem to play recursively through folders, only the mp3s in the cwd are played.
CDA: No problem.
Plays every kind of CD (good, cheap, RW etc) I've thrown at it, burnt from 8x-->52x, even an ancient FUJI 2x RW (burnt @2x on an old Yamaha) w/mp3s. (It's from the time when CDRW media came out)
DTS-5.1 Audio: Yes
The eq is fair:
8 fixed settings, and three binary for bass, super bass, and treble, which don't quite do exactly what you'd expect.
JPEGS
=====
Seem fine, rotations work but 90 deg. rotations have some artifacting. Many slideshow options not tested.
*jpgs were in folders where mp3 were.
(S)VCD
======
SVCD: Fine
VCD 2.0: Fine
VCD 1.0: Fine
*Menu option (in Audio opts) for mpeg: I bet this thing does mpeg multi-channel. That'd be kool. Not tested..yet
Overall Verdict: 8 of 10.
For me it does what the AD5131 could not; that is, the anamorphic conversion AND the PAL-NTSC conversion without destroying the A/R, so for #31, it is all I could ask for.
The unit does have a plethora of settings for video (separate picture enhancing settings, etc) and audio settings (rivaling the flexibility of a home-theater receiver (reverbs, setups for each channel), since it has the DD decoder built-in).
mp3 playback leaves alot to be desired. My Apex with its' old ESS chipset does an excellent job with my mp3s, does everything this wont (have rarely found an mp3 it couldn't playback, and even in those instances, it had something to do with the filename of the mp3 itself; either too long or it had some wierd chars ini it. The only drawback to the AD5131 is it doesn't play from one disc to the other (it's a 3 disc carousel). Certainly more than I will investiagte now, and more than most users could even understand.
Most if not all of the mp3 flaws in this unit could no doubt be fixed by a firmware upgrade, but I suspect Yamakawa will not underatake that challenge.

Excellent picture quality (display is a Sony projector with 122" screen).
I have a few poorly recorded discs that few players will play. The 238 played them 100%.
I had an Aspire AD-900 that I absolutely loved that died under warantee. Aspire sent me an AD-1100S for a replacement that turned out to be a piece of junk. Won't play poor media, very poor picture. Aspire won't believe me and say the 1100S is better than 900.
The menus of the 238 are the same as my old AD-900, so it seems they share chipsets or something.
I liked it so much I bought 4 of them! |

Amazing features for the price ($45, free after rebates!!!).
Easy Region free hack (I don't know if there's a macrovision hack), PAL-NTSC conversion, Progressive scan, DD decoder .
It played DVD+Rs from Japan (NTSC), DVD-R from US (NTSC), Region 1 NTSC DVDs, Region 2 PAL DVDs on my NTSC TV via 480p component, with a very acceptable picture |

| I needed a player that would play Danish movies. This thing was very easy to make region free, it is dirt cheap , and the picture is fine. I was happy when I go it working in my very low tech TV setup. I have no theatre system or surround sound, just an old beat up TV, but now I can watch my Danish movies! |

I purchased one of these from the net, after reading it's spec.
Plus it only cost me $32 after rebates.
dvd-r dvd+r dvd-rw dvd+rw cd-r cd-rw Mpeg etc,etc.
It may look a bit simple,looking and basic on the outside, but it sure does play, as they say "anything you can throw at it" (not divx)
And the picture and sound quality is great.
I've burned on all the formats above with no replay problems.
Using Ritek....Verbatim...Great Azo's all X4 speed.
Easy region free set-up via remote.
I for one, am sold on this versatile little machine and i'm going to buy another.
Check it out on the net!!!!

| I have both the Yamakawa 218 and the Yamakawa 238. Both work extremely well with every format DVD/CD and is PAL/NTSC compliant. Has played everything that I have tried. |
