I live in USA, California where I bought the Yamakawa DVD 218 model about a year back. I was pretty pleased with the player and about two weeks ago also bought the model DVD 238 (same player with Progressive scan). My favorite part was its ability to convert PAL to NTSC and the other way.
Last week, while visiting, I decided to bring the 2 players to India. While both players work, I am shocked to note that the remotes on BOTH the players does not work from more than about 2 feet away! The same remotes worked fine in USA (from about 6 feet.)
I tried the following:
- Changed batteries on both remotes
- Repositioned the players so I am sitting dead center in front of the sensor
- Recorded the Remote sequences onto a programmable remote. The programmable remote shows the same behavior (works from close only.) This seems to indicate that the problem is with the infrared receiver rather than the remote
- Tried on 220v connection
- Tried on 110v connection. My friend's house in India is wired for 110v - not sure of the frequency, however. I tried it here as well. Everything else that he has from the US works fine
- Prayed :)
I have sent an email to Yamakawa (July 8, 2004 India early morning) and will update their reply here.
In the meantime, if you have seen this or have any suggestions, please help!

I am totally in love with this dvd player. It has played everything from vcds, svcds, raw mpeg (mpegisos) on cd and dvd. I haven't had any problem playing homemade dvds (usually +R but sometimes -R burnt using iomega superdvd atapi drive). All of the CD's and DVD's i've tried work...even the cheap no name cd's like precision and dvd's like "value disk". i've never had any problems with it overheating (plays through all of the lotr extended edition movies just fine).
the one drawback is if you lose the remote the dvd player is pretty much useless since u cant even get it to switch to dvd mode (not tv mode) without it. |

Yamakawa DVD 218.
This is an excellent buy for a quarter of the price of SONY DVD player which I had.
It plays anything & everything. You name it,Yamakawa plays it for you.
It plays commercially avilable vcd, dvd. It plays movies recorded on any cd-r or cd-rw.
one more dream feature of this player is that it plays the mpeg files simply burnt on any god damn cd, using any software like nero 5.5
it also supports DVD -R & DVD-RW.It plays dvd-vcd 's too.
It also supports Photo cds.it provides great transition effects & various options to enjoy the photographs.
it provides 8x zoom in & zoom out.
16x fast forward & rewind.
it supports mp3 burnt on cd-r-rw &dvd-r-rw
The only drawback is it does not have a front panel LCD display,But who cares.
Overall it is a dream machine for 50$.
Thank you chikka for gifting me a dream machine & good luck yamakawa

| I bought 2 of these units from Fry’s yesterday (6-07-03)for $40.00 each. I was most interested in playing DVD-R’s recorded on my Panasonic DMR-E20. The only testing I have done was with DVD-R’s. All of the DVD-R’s I tried (at least 10) loaded and played all the way to the end but every minute or so there is a slight slow down of the video (like slow motion) then the video speeds up or jumps to get back in sync with the sound. At first I thought I was seeing things but after watching very carefully the problem is quite evident. I though the problem may be with the media so I tried several different brands, all show the same video problems. I also tried 2 DVD-R’s recorded on my friends Panasonic DMR-E30 they also had this same video problem. I have heard DVD-R’s recorded in a Panasonic standalone recorder can be a bit fussy and it is clear the YAMAKAWA DVD-218 does not like them so I will be returning them both. Real bummer I liked the size. I did not see this problem on any commercial DVD’s. ~ Bill |

All DVD+Rs works great. I did not change any bitsettings.
I recorded old VHS tapes as well as movies directly from analog or digital TV on Verbatim DVD+R and DVD+RW using Philips DVDR985 stand alone recorder. I used SP, LP, and EP mode -- all DVD+Rs work fine.
I used CD-R, CD-RW for mpg files nad JPEG photos, and it worked fine. The names of photo files was only 8 character long. |

| I've tested vcds (2.0 format), svcd's, xvcd's, mp3's, jpeg picture cd's, this dvd player practically plays anything you throw at it. I read reports from other users that vcd's are blocky or blurry, this is probably related more to the vcd creation process than the dvd player itself. I have found that all of my vcd's & svcd's play great. Try Super DVD Ripper 1.6x or higher or DVDx22, I've tried other software including most of the stuff listed on this website and pretty much nothing else compares to the ease of use these software apps and the quality vcd it produces. The dvd player is slim and attractive, the remote is a little small but isn't ugly and came with batteries. The player came with all the necessary documentation and cables including an s-video cable, most other players require you to purchase this extra. It has a built in dolby 5.1 decoder. The only features that i'm not hooked on is the physical power button to turn it on/off as the remote will not totally shut down the player and the 96khz dac (128khz or better is optimum sound) other than that this unit rocks! Compare this player's features against expensive dvd players and it leaves them all behind. For $50 U.S. ($77cdn before taxes) this player should be considered by all looking to purchase a dvd player. |

I'm having a blast with this player. Was looking for a player for my parents in Europe to play my home-made DVD's. 3 criteria: cheap, region free and play DVD-R without problems.
I found this beauty at BrandsMart (Sawgrass, FL) for a mere $38.88 !!
The player is hackable with the remote control. the4 13698888-hack worked great. Select region 0 and play all region DVD's.
It has a problem with my cheap-assed Prico media, both R and RW, after 30 minutes of playing-time. Since more people had this problem with the Princo-media, I went out to get some Maxells just for my home-videos which solved the problem.
Plays MP3-disks without a hitch. VCD's, SVCD's, no problem. CD's with MPEGs burnt directly on them: no problem (tested also with a DVD containing one 4Gb MPEG-file).
It will also play my picture-'archives'. Regular cheap (kHypermedia) CDR's with folders containing pictures. Even my 2.5Mb 3Megapixel images are displayed without problems. Images can be rotated, slideshowed, even with many different transitions.
I like it so much, that I went out and got one for myself as well! Perfect for our bedroom! Who can beat 40 bucks for a player that plays everything?
It does not have a LCD, but the menu's are great. Nice layout and colors (not that boring Apex-menu that I have on my other player, the GE5803 :-) Yep, hacked as well....).
If you're hessitating to get this and if it's worth it: Don't! Go out and get this little beauty! |

This unit is unbelievably powerful. For less than $50 I have a slim player that plays virtually any media (with the exception of cartridged DVD-RAM disks).
What's more, it plays PAL videos (DVD,VCD,mpeg) on NTSC or NTSC videos on PAL TV sets: it supports both TV standards right from the box for $50. Being a European living in the US this is an important feature to me.
Just drag and drop your MP3 or MPEG1/2 files onto a CD-R/RW or DVD-R/RW disk using Nero or similar tool and this unit will play it. No need to author your home made DVD movies, just copy the mpeg2 file onto a disk that is large enough and on you go.
Far the best DVD player as per price/performance.
I use Pioneer DVR-104 DVD-R/RW unit in an XP box to burn CD and DVD disks.
The only problems I found are:
- It did not play the sound of some of my mpeg files that I had captured from old and bad quality mono PAL VHS tapes
- In rare occasions it cannot detect a DVD-R/RW disk when first loaded. I just wiped the face of the DVD disk with my shirt sleeve and this worked all the time. I use the cheapest, absolutely no-name DVD-R/RW disks and the unit worked with all of them.

It would play the two demo SVCDs images I downloaded but it seemed to have trouble and take a long time to load and start playing them. I did not list it as supporting SVCDs for this reason.
The power button on the front is a physical switch for the unit. The power button on the remote requires the physical switch to be on. When the unit has been powered "off" by the remote it turns off its motor and video output and the eject/play/pause front panel buttons no longer work. to turn it "on" again on the front panel without the remote you have to turn the physical switch off and on again. that's annoying (well designed players wake up when you hit the eject button to put a disc. otherwise, this is an amazing player for its price ($47 at Frys). It is perfect for secondary TVs.
its mp3 playback interface and its setup UI is klunky but it does work.
the remote doesn't have an explicit "Enter" button. For DVDs it appears that the Play button functions as Enter. That's a little odd compared to others.
I rate it a 6 out of 10 for the mp3 & setup UI ackwardness, power button hokeyness, remote ackwardness and SVCD issues. consider rating points per dollar when buying and this one still comes out on top... |

I inserted an MP3 DVD as the first disk. It will play tracks if selected manually, but it can't find them automatically.
My disks are formatted like this:
/artist/album/track.mp3
It appears that it's too deep for this machine, even though the instruction manual claims that you can have sub folders. When I put it in shuffle mode, it will scan the root directory for it's contents, then it will search each subdirectory thereof. I thought it was doing a breadth first search, so I let it go. When it got to the end, it started all over again with the root directory. I had to turn off the machine as it would not recover from this operation. It will play a folder, even in random mode.
The good news is that this is generic < $1 per disk media. The bad news is that I'm not planning to change my disk format for a player.

Ok,
At first I was a little dissapointed with this player and tried to return it. I tried repeatedly to get it to play VCDs properly and sometimes they would start out ok...but then really start going crazy. I was fairly new to this stuff so part of it was a learning curve on how to best get divx files converted. Even after getting pretty good copies I was still encountering some blocks and blips in VCD playback. Finally I realized that my best efforts had been on cdrw discs. I then decided to try my regular disks at 4x as opposed to higher speeds and BINGO! Good vcds. I have noticed that it DOES get a little hot from time time, but this doesn't seem to be a problem with my 4x burned vcds. No problems at really with DVD plays. My only test with SVCD was before I really knew what I was doing so I need to retest this. From everything I have read about other players reviewed here I really can't complain about too much. Seems like all of them have their individual problems.
Disks used: Memorex CDRW 1x-4x, Memorex black CDR 4x-40x 80Min, Great Value. Best results on the memorex disks. |

| This player is a real coool player and works really well. I tested two of these DVD players and they did work really well for more than 16 hours continues play, no heating observed. Created VCD on imation CD-R's, work real well from a DVD. Looks like macro vision is off, as i am able to record movie in a VCR. It is playing mpeg file in any format just write an mpeg file on a CDR and put it in, it works( isn't is cool ha !! ). |

| Comments: |
Main reason to buy it was to play movies ob DVD-R. The goal has been achieved, but...
quality VCD is sux: a lot of artifacts, jumpy sound and picture.
MP3 files are plays some... sound appears for two seconds every 5-7 secs.
I never had these problems with same disk played on my other DVD players like different Panasonic brands or Toshiba.
The dry run: cheap and crappy gadget. Doesn't worth the money paid |
