Well after a long period of not done any updates, and planning to buy some SACD's
I upgraded the player with original firmware for Yamaha S657, after i found some better firmware i was planning to upgrade it again but this wasn't possible any more.
All the player gives is "unknown disc"
Any ideas on how to recover original firmware?

Works great on most things I throw at it.
I just upgraded the firmware to [URL=http://www.itepe.net/]LINK[\URL] CP1250 s550 v.10i (24.12.2005) with good results - no packed bitstream problems anymore, ID3 tag, long filename and easy directory browsing for MP3/DivX on TV display.
This mod also gives SACD support, but I have not tested this yet.
Can anyone confirm that to upgrade to DVD-A capability you need the DVDS657 version, and that this has to be done via a serial cable?
I tried with the s657 firmware (both original and mod) via CD and all I get is the "unknown disc" error message when I try to load the CD.
Those of you that have been successfull in upgrading to s657 firmware please let me know how.
The board looks like it has a good serial connector, not like on [URL=http://mtz.softpedia.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=2]LINK[\URL] - that looks wayyy too fiddly (hesitating to make up a serial cable though until I know that I need to for sure). |

OK, since everyone here seems to be talking about the DVD S657 (which I own) maybe some kind soul will help me out;

When I first got the player-I was overjoyed-great picture-great sound!
and then the bugs:
1. "DVD Audio" in the sound menu stays greyed out, and will not work-or become accessable- when a DVD-A is playing-no adjusting.
2. When playing CDs, I have to reset the upsampling rate(2x, 4x) each time I play a CD-the setting I choose will not stick-which then means you have to turn your TV on to see what you are doing in the menu just to listen to a CD.
3. The player will always default to DTS setting even though I dont have it; no sound-when I switch to stereo, I get sound- but THAT setting will not stay put-I have to change it every time.
OK, so I sent my player to YAMAHA waited 2 weeks, and they sent me a brand new fresh one.
Same exact problems;
Ive been too busy and discouraged to go through the hassle again...
anyone have any Ideas-It has been said that this trouble is in the EEPROM...
The CSR at Yamaha tried to BS me into beleiveing that the upsampling is supposed to default to OFF every time;
anyone? its either 2 weeks w/o a player to Yamaha, or 2 weeks at the local repair shop |

Very nice player. 1 year passed since I had bought it. Never had a problem. Brilliant picture and superb audio. Plays almost every type of media format.
Yamaha 657 firmware is the best to upgrade.
Never use Philips 720SA firmware. You'll have big trouble.
Would like to have a Faraudja DCDI in it. Thats because I rate it 9. |

I personaly upgraded to 657 firmware ( have changed Yamaha backgrouds with backgrouds from http://lazadezign.freeweb.hu/ )
There is no danger to switch Yamaha's firmares from 550 to 657 and back. Have tried many variations.
The only trouble i had when upgradee yamaha 550 with Philips 720 original firmware. The player refused to work and switched off. I had to load Yamaha firmware back by the serial cable.

Works fine for my home movies burnt to 4.7Gb -r and +r. However would love to get it to work with 8.5Gb +R DL media but no success (tried traxdata, TDK and verbatim media which all play in my PC DVD drive Ok).
Anyone know if there is any way to get this to play DL media??

I have tried the V38 as I updated with it some time ago but it reads "unknown disc" now, I even renamed the file with 657 but with no luck.
It isn't a problem as this deck doesn't get used and it was fun messing with it, it can be set to play DVD-A but the deck fails to play and so will only cope with the lower res tracks. SACD works, just keep an eye on the speaker settings as it changes to multichannel sometimes.
Please keep us informed of any other variants as this is good fun. |

Upgraded to 657 firmware, doesn't play David Gray DVD-A, only the "normal" channels. SACD plays but need to constantly set 2CH mode as it it thinks it has 5.1 out, which it doesn't.
Any one know how to switch it back to dvd-s550? |

I updated my firmware to v38 and now subtitles work fine. But... Pan scan <-> letter box doesn't have effect at all and part of the picture is missing all the time in my 4:3 TV. Some users in finland reported about the same problem, which appeared only after upgrading firmware v32 -> v34 or higher. Problem is noticed when movie is paused and zoom 1/2 is used. Somebody had the same problem with widescreen television, so maybe the bug is in firmware.
I'm anxious to hear, if everyone has the problem, or if not, why? I'll try the firmware below and I hope it helps. |

I have spent a lot of time trying various upgrades for my player. So far the best is: Yamaha DVD-s657 firmware loaded into this player. I have used original 657 firmware (changed Yamaha Menu Logo). So my player now:
Plays DVD-audio
Plays Super Audio CD (SACD)
The audio quality (CD and MP3) is much better (Digital output)

I got this player in a bundle with the Yamaha RX-V350 Home Cinema Receiver. I really like the player, it plays everything I need and works fine.
Things I do NOT like about this player:
1. When you first turn it on it takes quite some time until you are able to oben the dvd-drawer. Even if no disc is inserted it wants to load at first until it "realizes" that there is no disc present.
2. XVIDs/DIVX Names are not displayed in full but shortened. That sucks - specially when you have some season Episodes on one DVD.

Has been a nice and solid player before upgrading firmware v32 to v38. I'm now waiting for a downgrade cd from yamaha support center ;-(
I would suggest read the firmware upgrade manual careful, specially the changes related decoding mpeg audio. Otherwise you probably will end up with a useless, damaged knickknack.

Alright well switching from a Apex model and a Norcent DP 300 at the time. Those models worked great 2 years ag obut I need something more up to par on the media formats.
This player works really freaking great. Except one fact that I did like I bought it for the purpose of dvd9 playback it says it can do DVD+R DL, so far what I've thrown at it can't read the media from Ritek to Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim they all say no disc after 30 seconds of searching.
Manual even says it supports it. So was I been mislead here at all. Or do they mean DVD9 double sided or single sided is my case.
Either way it;s still a keeper because it plays avi's, aac encodings, ogms, wmv's, xvid, divx without unlocking it.
Great work Yamaha just a little more clearing up next time on the format. |

I have a 5750 but as per Yamaha Support it is the same as the 550. The firmware on that page worked just fine, no problems except that some long mp3 names are wrapping back to the beginning of the line and messes up some other names. Other than that, the subtitles have special characters, make sure you download the right one for you, see the page codes. Please post your comments after you try it. |

Hey,
I have now been testing my DVD-player a several days and I wonder what you are all talking about ID3 tag? I haven't found it. I have updated the firmware to v34 and but there wasn't any special (except the sub support to divx/xvid).
DVD-player has played all media what I have tryed, very well (dvd, dvd-r, dvd+rw, mp3-cd, mp3-dvd, xvid, divx, etc.). With packed xvid I have noticed the same problem then others, but unpacking solves that problem. I really like this player, but I have only compared it to my old player (Pioneer dv-535) and that was old one.
Is there also some things what annouys me in this player. First thing is that it does only show 8 charater on filenames. Second it doesn't show any special characters on filenames, like scandic letters. And third why the space-character have to take so mutch space on those filenames, it is simply too wide?
I hope there comes soon update that fixess those problems, specially those scandic letters would bee nice. I think that Swedish, Norwegians and Danish would also like to see characters like ä, ö, å, etc. |
