Contrary to the other views given here, this player ROCKS!
It is dated now of course but it still is worthy of a review as I use it every day and it rarely gives me a problem at all.
I got the firmware updated from http://pyps.izisplet.com/yamada6600_more.html and I must say it is incredible, the differences in the player BEFORE and AFTER changing the firmware! those guys that do the modded firmware more or less bring you a much better device by their coding wizardry!
Now I have changeable subtitle colours and sizes, loads of other options that are far too many to list! plus I am not near the player right now and so I can't go through all the settings pages to tell you what they have!
So if you see an old Yamada on ebay (like I did) then grab it fast and get the firmware!
You will not have many files that won't play.
Oh and also it plays DVD's great. Never a single stutter or glitch!

I got the DVD player for a few years and didn't use it quite a lot.
Sometimes the machine blocked when inserting a DVD, this seemed to happen at random.
And now, the DVD drive didn't open anymore. Tried resetting, even tried opening the player but nothing worked. A dvd was stuck in it. I had to crack the thing open to get my DVD back. Next thing I did was to put this crappy thing together with the garbage. Farewell Yamada, I'll never buy your crap again.

Bought my Yamada in september 2004, and now after 3 years the DVD doesn't open anymore (tried unplugging and re-connecting, tried switching off and back on, etc...). I have used the player for about 20 hours in total (at maximum), haven't used it a lot and surely didn't mistreat it, surprises me it is defect now. And of course, it's out of warranty.
Had also quite a lot of problems in times the crap thing still worked: the Yamada blocked playing some DivX or XviD movies, blocked even at certain DVD discs,...
I really wouldn't advise buying this piece of junk.

This guide shows how to burn DVD+R DL so that they can be played by Yamada DVX-6600.

So, this is how looks a good (properly burnt) DVD+R DL (in DVDInfo Pro):

Disc Regions are........................1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8
Media code/Manufacturer ID..............**************
Media Product Revision Number...........1
UDF Format Type ........................V1.02
UDF Volume Name.........................**************
...
Book Type................................DVD-ROM
Media Type...............................DVD+R DL

How to burn it so?

Set the Book Type of DVD+R DL to DVD-ROM.

Use DVD Fab to process the files of the DVD, but don't burn with it ("Burn Dual Layer" option has to be enabled, I guess). Instead, save the DVD DL files to a folder and burn the DVD with Nero. The thus burnt DVD+R DL is playable on Yamada DVX-6600.

Otherwise, you take the risk that the DVDs DL you burn won't be playable on that player.

Why did I post this guide? Let's look on:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers.php?DVDnameid=3937&Search=Search

There, several posters reported that Yamada DVX 6600 cannot play DVD+R DL. Now, if you ask me, the fault for that is either having an older firmware (I reccomend having it flashed with ZaPyps firmware from the My Yamada forum) or not knowing how to properly burn those DVD+R DL.

Doing as explained above, one cannot fail in playing DVD+R DL on Yamada DVX-6600. I used DVD Fab Platinum 2.8.9.3 (Gold Mode), Nero 7.5.0.2 and DVDInfo Pro 4.616.

I don't know what happens if one cannot set the Book Type to DVD-ROM. Flashing your burner with a firmware from rpc1.org is reccomended in this case. For NEC and Optiarc drives, do a Google for "Liggy Dee" (without the quotes). Read flash instructions twice before flashing something!!!! I mean it.

This Yamada 6600 and its firmwares.. Argh! No suppot from Yamada! (ie. if you want to see subtexts)

I bought Enzer E5368 and that fixed my problems. This is a toy, seriously! I give this DVD-player to my kids and I'm not worry about anymore...

Here Finland they don't sell this model (6600) any more because too much warranty problems. I been warranty-changed this one because it didn't played any more afrer two week of purchased.

Great DVD player. Plays everything I throw at it. It even plays DivX movies encoded with WMA audio (which my Lite-On 2001 would not).

Just to confirm, this DVD player DOES play RCE region encoded discs. I have played "Team America" and "Closer" on mine, which are RCE.

This is my second Yamada and I'm about to buy there latest 6700 (for 43 pounds from ebuyer.com) as I'm certain it will be great. I've bought one for my father so that I can easily send him video files of his new grand daughter, just extract them from the video camera (mini dvd recorder) and save them to a blank disc, job done! It will also play mp3 at much lower bit rates (56k), as many standard dvd players don't do. This mean that with audio books, you can fit more on the discs. I would not buy a standard dvd player again!

Know issue with automatic switch to 16/9 even if you change setting.

After a study on newsgroups I found that this problem is reported as a bug of the 6600 series.
The problem resulted from a defective weld on the Peritel SCART Connector #8.
I neutralized the contact between my TV and DVD player with a scrap of paper on the connector #8!!!
And now it's working fine.

i've read bad things about this player but so far i've nothing but praise for it.
its played divx (3&5), xvid, dvd+r, vcd and svcd fine, all on verbatim media.
the remote is ugly and is pretty unresponsive but the other issues discussed regarding the remote seem to have been resolved.
i payed £53 for the player, which is as cheap as anything your gonna find in tescos and is packed with more features than you could shake a stick at.

decent player for the money, so stop moaning about the little irrelevant things.

well worth the money.

originally with original firmware remote interfered with my surround remote,
& ritek & datawrite dvd-r's skipped avery few mins or so once the disc warmed up (after about 10 mins) Tho bulkpaq DVD-R didnt.
i upgraded to firmware 4 from offical yamada website which resolved the remote issue but discs still skipped
i upgraded firmware to a hacked one called beta 3 from www.my-yamada.co.uk which seems to have resolved the skipping on the above brands.
also this aparently lets you have greek subtitles on divx tho i havent tried it.
ive only had it a day, but seems to play everything fine now, plays most divx from cd or dvd (a couple was very glitchy, but they were glitchy too on my pc so i presuime it was errors in the avi to blame.

Important notes I consider to be mentioned:
1. MiniDVD (DVD format on CD) is playable (of course with selectable language and subtitels), but it is necessary to use smaller bitrate and constant bitrate.

2. It plays SVCD menu (created in Nero6), SVCD selectable language, but not SVCD subtitles (yet - final firmware should ensure this in future as well)

3. Have trouble with drive noise - but the right selection of CD brand has solved this (egg. GIGA MASTER CD RW was better than VERBATIM ones).

4. Playing DIVx/Xvid format with selectable subtitles using various analphabet (EU states etc.) is achieveable. But don´t forget: Only *.srt format (*.sub or *.txt formats must be converted into SRT before. The beta firmware ver.5 with connection to MktSrtFix software helps you reach quiet readable centered subtitles.

5. Some players types do not light blue light in front (probably the cheaper ones), but it has no other influence on quality or range of functions.

Works OK with Verbatim's DVD+R DL media (MKM-001-00), recorded in patched NEC 2500A (modified firmware of 2510A).

Some issues with subtitles, and power on/off when player is connected to a TV-set which automatically switches to AV input (like SCART or composite) have still not been resolved, even with the latest firmware update.

To be precise i have babylon 5 and external subtitles in srt format. The player totally ignores them. Can anyone help me with this? The subtitles are named exacly like the video files. I also tried hellsing (DVDRip,XVID,AC3)with external subtitles and it worked fine. I also would like to see support for OGM files through some firmware update. Other than that a great player so far

Decent video/audio quality for the price but tacky remote control, non-existent support and too many unresolved problems. Yamada has released only a few extremely minor beta firmware updates that did not resolve any of the unit's key problems:

- poor subtitle support (truncated, missing characters, et.)
- remote control conflicts with many other devices (no, David, you are not alone with this issue and there is no solution)
- file browser window truncates file names
- scart causes TV to remain in AV mode when Yamada powered down via remote and requires a hard reset to return TV to tuner mode
...

Had this for three months now.
pros: Easy Multiregion, Looks good, Good picture quality, cheap

cons: Noticed that playback is occasionally little jerky on region 1 Smallville but only perceptible on fast pans. Did not have this on old Wharfedale M5.
Occasional crashes. Remote control a little confusing - easy to hit wrong button during FF/RWD and exit to titles.
Poor display.
