Plays DVD-R ok if it is kept cool!

If your Wharfdale M5 sits under the TV in the 'Oven' with the vcr then it will start jumping and skipping towards the end of a DVD-R disk.
The fix is to use the off switch on the front to switch off, not the standby button, and also keep it away from any heat source and out in the open!

Comments:
Originally bought this player specifically for Mini DVD use which it does perfectly. Was impressed to find that it played almost every MPEG-1 file that I threw at it, regardless of size, frame rate or data rate. The quality of the video playback from VCD and SVCD is significantly better than every other DVD player that I tested (around 200 different machines). Scene selection menu on SVCD works perfectly, unlike many other DVD players. Quality of video and audio playback from DVD and DVD-R is at least as good as every other player I tested and quite a bit better than most. Unlike some other DVD players this unit will play DVD-R video recorded at maximum bit rate but the zoom function has trouble with the max bit rate discs. Only hickup that I have experienced is on two occasions when the machine was first turned on the picture started vibrating up and down slightly. This corrected itself when the machine was turned off and on again. All CD-R and DVD-R media that I have tested work fine. If you need a versatile DVD player then I think this unit is the best quality one and by far the best value one on the market.

I bought this player 18 months ago and have been highly delighted. I've just bought a panasonic burner and had noticed stuttering in playback on the datasafe dvd-r's. I changed to ritek but still got the same (doesn't happen on original disks). The store I bought it replaced it and same thing again but...
...it only happened when I scanned a few chapters - it didn't do it when I watched the movie from start to finish. A problem if you fall asleep half way through a movie and want to watch the end the following day!
I hear the models starting 122xxx had stuttering problems, mine is the 127xxx.
Will

Firstly, go to www.area450.com and learn about this machine.

I swapped the internal drive for a Liteon 165H and this machine now plays all my DVD-R and DVD-RW disks (it wouldn't play DVD-RW before and stuttured on some DVD-R). The drive cost me £25. What a bargain.

It is also possible to replace the firmware with one that adds hard drive support and a better menu system.

Comments:
Generally pleased with this player but the
user interface *is* pretty clunky. It just
freezer up sometimes requiring to be power
cycled.

Just thought I would post to add my experiences
with SVCD. After a fashion it works fine on
CD-R and CD-RW created with Nero, but more times
than not it takes a *long* time to load the disc.
Sometimes it just hangs and even when it does
start to play you can't pause or fast forward/
reverse. That was a bit disappointing.

Might look for a cheap Toshiba SD-220E. My Dad's
got one and it seems to play whatever you throw
at it.

I have a Philips 228k DVD+R/RW drive and my M5 has played all my backed up DVD's to date, No problems with mp3 cd's and VCD's but occasionally the sound is slighly out of sync with the movie. Will not play my dvd+rw discs. I really rate this player, I've had it for 1 year now and no problems what so ever. My friend has a sony dvd and it wont play any mp3 or vcd's i have made.

I havent had a single problem with this player. I have been using both vcd and svcd encoded with both nero and tmpgenc and the quality of divx converted to SVCD is AWESOME!!

I love it!! and considering I didnt even think I wanted a dvd player cos I thought It would cost me a fortune. Gotta love this player especially with broadband :-)

Very good player - I echo the previous comments.

One small problem, though (if you are really fussy) is that MPEGs on SVCDs appear to be cut short on playback. Only by a second or so, but it makes playback of complex SVCD or single frame MPEG images a bit difficult.

(MPEGS creted in TMPG, burnt through VCDEasy, for those that need to know.)

Great Player! I have had a problem with a single VCD MPEG made for me. Thats been my only problem!

It plays non-std SVCDs. At the mo it only plays specific resolutions, namely 352x240 352x288, 480x480, 480x576 and also DVD resolutions.

It doesnt care about whether the format matches the res either. It happily plays a 352x240 PAL Movie!

On the downside it won't play a 352x288 MPEG2 stream with the DAR flag set to 16:9. But hey who cares!

I spent ages looking for a half decent player that is multi-region and can play VCD and MP3s. This is one of the few that does all really well and for 140 pounds (225 dollars) I think this player is amazing :-)

I've had it for over 6 months now and have my whole CD collection on 15 MP3CDs ton's of VCD movies on about 10 different types of media and 15 DVDs regions 1 & 2 and they all play fine.

I bought a Pioneer 340 and had problems with the multi-region, so I got a refund and bought the M5.
It's a great machine, I'm glad I took the pioneer back.
Better VCD play, better sound, MP3 play is great.
More features and a great set of outputs.
Picture is as good or better than other similarly priced players.
Region hack worked first time, no problems.
Get this player...

Fantastic feature-set for the price - great picture on DVD, too. Cannot get it to work properly on SVCD (Tmpgenc or CCE with BBmpeg) - "stop", "fast forward" and "fast backward" will not work! Tried burning with Nero 5.5.5.1, WinOnCD3.8PE, VideoPack5.0, Ulead VideoStudio5.0 with DVD Plug-in and DVD Movie Factory. Also tried different media (cheap and expensive and different colour CDRs) without success. Also tried XVCD (2250kbps)as a last resort but was still unsuccessful. Finally, returned player to retailer (Tesco) for full refund and got myself a Bush DVD2004 instead. Pity.

RGB Hi-quality video output. PAL60 for jerkfree NTSC on PAL TV's. Dolby Digital outputs. Plays most CDRs (haven't tried CDRW) Bonus of onscreen display of MP3 directories but only 8 characters in titles. Only downside is the cheap plastic finish. Superb "does it all" machine.
Dumped my Samsung 709.

right this player blows the 750s out of the water
vcd on cdr is between 50 and 75% better - sound is 100%
better with a time delay feature for each speaker grapic equ. all gold sockets on the rear.
On the bad side no digest feature, and is not playing dvdsilvers without stuttering this is very annoying and apart from that would be challenging Pioneer for quality and would get a 9/10 (nothing is worth 10 in my opinion)

Tries to play MPEG4, getting the distorted video.
The DVD don't care about the VCD format. Started to play the lone .DAT file on regular CD - not VCD (although the play was very distorted).

The MP3 is awesome - it even got a customizable equalizer! The file names are supported (up to 8).

Great machine!
