Comments:
This player will only play DVD-R/RW disks. I have tested with DVD+R and +RW disks from several manufacturers and they all refuse to play. This is to be expected as the manual states that only DVD-R/RW disks are supported. The SD-K750 plays Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R (Media Code TYG02) disks perfectly.

Unfortunately, the player is not very reliable. After a few months of use, I began to experience 3-5 second skips while playing movies without any scratches. If I rewind and play the same action again, the movie doesn't skip. This doesn't happen on other DVD players, and I verified that the disk was good by ripping it to disk with no read errors. I have noticed more erratic behavior such as block artificats on newly burned pristine DVDs. Again, when I RW and play again, it plays perfectly. The player seems to be slowly dying.

I also had a problem playing a backup of Kung Fu Hustle which I ripped with AnyDVD and DVD Shrink 3.2. The movie plays fine on my PC and on my KLH DVD-8350 but the SD-K750 refuses to let me skip the Sony studios logo at the beginning of the movie despite the fact that Protected User Operations were disabled. It then skips to the movie and will not allow me to access the menu. I initially thought this was a problem with a burn but my KLH DVD-8350 works as expected (skip the logo, go to main menu) and I haven't been able to replicate the problem on Windows Media Player, PowerDVD, or VLC.

On the up side, this DVD player can be easily made region free. Here are the instructions to do so:

. Press the Open button on your remote control to
>open the drive tray
>2. Press the 2403960 button on your remote control
>3. Press the Enter button on your remote control to
>change the region to 1
>for
>region 1, 2 for region 2, and so on, or 9 for
>multi-region playback
>4. Press the Open button on your remote control to
>close the drive tray
>5. Power off the DVD player
>6. Power on the DVD player

I like this player because I have DVDRs that I recorded on Panasonic (-R) and on Cyberhome (+R) and they both play on this machine. Got it at Costco for $45. Purchased a Panasonic ($80)that was advertised to play +R, -R and RAM, but it would not play those +Rs I recorded on the Cyberhome. Panasonic customer service finally answered an e-mail and said the player did not support "all DVD+R" formats.
I also like the remote which is easy to read. Even my parents in their 80's use this machine.

Comments:
won't play progressive on my mits because of proprietary 595 conversion, not 480? What's that? I have to play it via an s-video cable. Won't play a dual layer disc, this thing is destined for my plain standard definition tv in the bedroom. It also has a long load up time, I'm not very happy with this player at all. As a no frills dvd player I guess it's ok, but just don't expect much out of it.

Returned Toshiba SD-192 to Wal Mart (had it 10 months, were they pissed at me).
This model is similar except that it is less fussy about the brand of media it will play.
The maker says that only DVD-R, DVD-R/W will work.Better believe them.
Only reason I have another Toshiba is because W$L M$RT wouldn't pony up a refund.
Stay away from this brand name.I'll never lay down cash for another Toshiba of any kind. There warranty is craptacular.
One year, no authorized dealers, has to be couriered to them with a credit card number and you get dinged $25 if they can't find the problem.
There has been some talk (rumour mostly) that they start testing these things before they leave the sweat shop.I don't believe it.
Go Samsung!
