I recorded a TDK+R on a Sony Vaio 430 using their built in (cheap)software "Click to DVD", and it played fine in this unit.

Played every DVD-R so far. I use Memorex and Verbatim discs. All burned with an iMac DV SE G3/500 and a Formac Devideon superdrive. Also played VCDs burned on Sony 700MB CD-Rs. Most were burned using Toast 5. Some were encoded and burned using Formac's proprietary software. The only problem I've had is that occasionally on some discs with 2-channel sound only, the audio "jumps" between speakers, then evens out. This doesn't happen often. Otherwise, this has been an excellent player.

Have just begun burning my own disks.Using a Matshita DVD-R /-RW drive on my PC. Using 'imation' DVD-R disks. One out of 5 disks have worked. All 5 disks work on my PC as well as a Sony stand alone DVD player.

Basically all types of cdrs I've tried works (Mitsui, TDK, Taiyo Yuden, Fuji)

TDK DVD-R and Mitsui DVD-R work excellent.
Wouldn't play a standard SVCD. Read that it must be burned a certain way.

I mainly purchased this unit for the DVD and DVD-Audio capablility. Great Unit for the price with progressive scan and component output. Remote is nice and simple with good on-screen menus. Has 6-channel analog output for dts and multi-channel DVD-Audio.

Excellent player for the money!! (Nov '02)

Having had the 5700 for only a few weeks, I cannot vouch for its longevity or long-term dependability. However, so far I have played the following with no problems:

DVD-Video
DVD-R (Fujifilm DVD-R)
Pioneer DVD-RW
CD-R
CD-Audio

DVDs were burned with Pioneer DVR-A04 using Adobe Premiere, MainConcept MPEG encoder plug-in, and Sonic DVDIt! 2.5 LE. CDs were burned on a Plextor 12-10-32S using Easy CD Creator 5.

Picture and sound quality (using Toslink optical cable) is great. I'm no audiophile but it sounds excellent to my ears.

I have not tested DVD-Audio or HDCD but the manual says it will play them. Apparently, and I may be wrong about this, you have to use the digital audio out (optical or cable) to get the full range of sound from DVD-Audio or HDCD. It appears that analog audio connections will just provide normal CD quality audio.

Remote is nice although I personally don't care for the shuttle jog (will take some getting used to). Manual is pretty good. Comes only in silver finish.
This is supposed to be an enhanced version of the 4700 with the addition of HDCD. I replaced my perfectly functional Toshiba 3109 with it because the 3109 would not play CD-R or DVD-R/RW. Paid $293 including tax.

I recommend it.

Excellent DVD Player... No problems what so ever.

Also Plays VCD very well.

This player WILL play SVCD, but not before a little work. If you burn your MPEG2 file onto disc using Nero with Compliance turned off, Nero will burn the MPEG2 with a VCD header. The Machine will then play the disc without any major problems. The only problem I have had is the time stamp seems to become out of sync... but that is really very minor. Also, I had one problem with the machine over heating while using a SVCD; this was caused however by the machine being placed in a cluttered component cabinet at a friend’s house. Once back at home or in a well ventilated cab, all worked fine...

I gave the machine a 9/10 due to having to spend the extra time burning as a VCD rather then SVCD.

Worked Great with the Very First VCD burned on CD-R. Tried CD-RW and that work fine to. I'm using Roxio CD-Creator Platinum v5.1, and TMPGEnc. Haven't tried SVCD yet, but not sure I need to. Head that in can be done with Nero. Used both Memorex and Verbatim CDs and NO problems, Plays MP3 Fine But, only 8 char. of the file name shows. The Player Has EVERYTHING I ever wanted. Am going to try DVD-R next. Picture and Features at this Price is Incredible. I would recommend this player. Only rated it a 9 out of 10 because of poor MP3 support and no support for DVD+R. Otherwise would buy again!

Really is a nice player and complements my Toshiba 57HX81 TV.

The only problem I have is that I have not been able to get it to read DVD-RW at all. I have tried generic brand and I have tried Memorex. Works fine with Princo DVD-R, though.

This unit WILL play SVCD discs, IF you brun them with NERO, as a VCD, and turning 'compliance' off.

I tried it with CDR's and with CDRW discs.

As DVD players go this is nice. It has nice bells and whistles: pause/strobe, zoom, capture custom background, virtual remote, etc.

** BUT ** if you're looking to play (s)VCDs stay away! It does ** not ** play S-VCD. It's irksome. Back to the store I go. What do I want with a deck that won't play my fair-use-backup copies of StarTrek- or Family Guy episodes? Yes, that would be little.

It does support VCD Menus (if you're using burning software like Nero). It will read CDR(w) VCDs. No fun fun combinations will yeild playing SVCDs. **BIG** oversight by toshiba. whooptie-doo, it plays next gen DVDs. Name one major retailer than has those... side note: Apex eats CDRs. I had two. I might be that I bought them both from K-mart, but at $119/ea I couldn't pass it up. This Toshiba was $199.
