Owned this player for quite some time. One of the first progressive scan players that came to the market and made in Japan too.
DVD-Rs work on this player. However I've only tested DVD-Rs with Ritek, Prodisc and Yaiyo Yuden media codes.
The big surprise for me was a Fujifilm branded DVD+R Double-Layer with media code RITEK-D01-01, burned by a Pioneer DVR-111D burner with firmware 1.29. It plays on the venerable Toshiba SD-5109! |

I've had this player for almost 3 years now, and it's been solid as a rock.
Just tried it with Sony brand DVD-R media burned by a Pioneer DVR-105, and it worked fine. |

| I borrowed a DVD+R FujiFilm disc from a friend. The movie played flawlessly. He created the disc on an HP DVD300i, but I'm not sure what compatibility bitsettings he used. I don't think he modified them, so whatever the default is should work. |

Imation DVD-Rs work every time. I've never burnt a coaster...
Unfortunately, the same discs cannot be played on the earlier version, Toshiba SD-3109 [almost the same player cosmetically, but not progressive scan, and doesn't have the 'psuedo remote' on the front panel]
The picture quality progressively scanned hasn't held up as well as it should have over the years. I bought this player the day it hit market, and I'm feeling the woes now... Cheaper, BETTER players have flooded the progressive scan market... As far as I know, the Toshiba SD-5109 does NOT make use of 3:2 pulldown... that everyone seems to go ga-ga over these days...
Anyway... that said... DVD-R -IS- possible!! Just make sure to get some Imation data DVD-R for general use version 2.0 discs and you'll be happy. =)
Working CDRWs I know of are Memorex and HP... for audio cd as well as VCD. |

| I bought this player when it first hit the stores. This player is great for two disc sets. The remote is very user friendly and has features I have yet to play with on a DVD. I am a little disappointed that CD-r/w media does not work though. I guess I'll just have to connect my PC to my 51" TV and use it as an UltimateTV box without the cost of the services. Excluding the highspeed Internet of course. |

| I burned a DVD-R (Cheap Imation DVD-R from Compusa) on my Sony DRU500A and it worked. Well, it worked when burning the authored files (AUDIO_TS, VIDEO_TS directories) using the Record Now software that comes with the drive but NOT with the latest Nero 5.5.100 software. |

| I have tested DVD+R and DVD+RW from Fuji on the player with no success. It always reports a "Disc Error". The burner is a Sony DRU-500A. The DVDs all play fine on my Toshiba DVD drive (PC). |

I was able to play a Samsung BeAll DVD-R 2x disc with no playback errors. No other DVD-R media I've tried seems to work with this player except Mitsui and that's bloody expensive.
The test disc was using dvdxcopy-extracted content, burned at 2X with vob (UDF 1.02) on a Sony DRU-500A.

Most DVD-R work. I have tried 3 different brands and they all played. Did have some picture artifacts with one brand of dvd-r (ESBuy.com). All other brands I have tried worked well. Burned all DVD-R with Prassi PrimoDVD.
The DVD-RW (Memorex) that I tried did not work.
Excellent picture quality progressive scan DVD player.
I would rate it a 10 if it were compatible with all media. |

| Persistence has paid off. Please ignore my previous rating indicating that CD-RW would not work. Another user’s rating recommended Memores 1x-4x CD-RW. I acquired and experimented with the Memorex 1x-4x CD-RW media. Burned at 2x, it does work – not always – but generally it does work. |

I burned and played a DVD+RW from an HP dvd 100i
with compatibility mode set to 2 (normal mode 1 has been shown by others to not work)..
With mode 2, the disc played with no problems at all.

This DVD player looks great. I have a Toshiba Cinema Series HDTV which can use the progressive scan output. It really is excellent. I got it for $450 after the model was replaced with the SD6109.
However, in spite of what other reports on this site say regarding being able to get some CD-R and CD-RW to work in this player, I have had little success. I have tried silver, gold, purple, CD-R and CD-RW, 4x-10x burning, you name it, nothing worked. But, my neighber gave me a CD-R he made, and it played fine. He didn't have anymore of the same type for us to try more. I can play the discs I burned on other DVD players, so I know I have the content correct (standard VCD). I think it is "pot luck." You might find some media that works, but don't count on all media working. If you don't plan on making VCDs, this is a great player. |

The player is a progessive output model - my TV has progressive in...the picture is stunningly clear. The VCD issue is why I give it an 8 (instead of 10).
It will read Silver CD-RWs, but, it doesn't seem to read them very well - perhaps its a bitrate thing that I need to play with. I was able to digitize a home movie and dump it to a CDRW and it played nice. Next, I dumped a whole MPG feature length movie from DIVX onto it - didn't do so well. Pic was there, but, unwatchable. All kinds of artifacts - sound was choppy. Hmmm. I may end up with a cheap $139 SAMPO to watch VCDs, and keep the SD5109 for real DVDs which is does a *fine* job with. |
