| On a side note, you can also put .avi / DIVX files on DVD-R and DVD-RW disks and then play them, just like you can with CD-R and CD-R media. So you can squeeze 6 times as many AVI's per disk using DVD-R media. |

I like this player allot. It has played everything I have thrown at it. It even played nero mp4 files which really surprised me. I haven't tried the HDMI output but the component output on a hdtv set has a great pic.
I went into bestbuy to purchase the newer model the sd-5000. When I saw this model also still available, I grabbed it because of reviews here and also the optical out the newer model lacks.
region hack works perfectly. Region 2 and 4 discs play smoothly.
So far no complaints. |

Freezes so much on cd audio disks it's useless. I found to continue playing, hit the "setup button" once and then once again.
It also freezes in DVD and Divx movies, but I thought that was a problem with encoding or bad disks; turns out it's the player.
Doesn't freeze more than 2 or 3 times during a movie, but it's annoying.
Beautiful picture though, but all in all, if I can't play music cds (doesn't matter if they're cd-rs or commercial grade recordings) it's useless to me.
Best Buy refused to take it back when I asked for a refund. Now I'm stuck with this POS.
Oh, the optical cable keeps falling out also every time you move it. My model is SD-4990-S-TV MC113eo2**** if that helps anyone else. |

Pros: Great picture if you use the HDMI cable. Also the 16:9 display works with the correct aspect ratio. Most DVD players that I have tried will just stretch the picture sideways to fit the 16:9 HDTV sets, but this player gets it right. Chipset is Zoran 888.
Con: HDMI cable was not included, Best Buy wants another $50 for the cable. |

| The DVD is the best for divx. Burn a dvd-r or dvd+r as a data dvd with 4-5 avi files, insert into dvd player and voila. The subtitles though appear almost in the center of the screen and it looks very unorthodox. |

I give it a 10 because so far, there is nothing I haven't been able to do.
The picture is great, better than my old Philips 642, the remote is better, but still not perfect. (-1pt for mediocre remote)
Zoom is better. Chosing audio is better.
I havne't tried the HDMI cable, yet.
Plays all my divx and mp3 cds and dvdrs that I used to use on my Philips 642.
No problems with freezing or other reported problems others seem to have.
Really really like the long file name and scrolling id tag at bottom of tv when playing music cds.
Bought it as Best Buy on sale for $79 |

| Having problems with video freezes (~2secs, up to 20-30 per dvd) during playback of dvd-r and dvd+r. They play ok on other players, but this is important to me so I am getting a refund. Sure wish I could get more info about this problems for other DVD players before having to buy and return them also. |

DivX XviD

| Comments: |
I was looking for an inexpensive DVD player that would play DivX and XviD. So far this thing has played everything I have thrown at it. I've put it all on a Memorex DVD-RW, and I had some MPEG 1&2, some DivX, XviD, normal AVI's and it played them all. Better yet is this thing up converts (ONLY IF HOOKED UP THROUGH HDMI) everything so it looks better than on the computer. Which is good because at 55" those TV shows can get a little blocky. It does have a good menu system for files that are dropped straight onto a disc. So no need to make one yourself.
I do however have some items that kept it from getting a 10. A great example is it takes 10-15 seconds to find the right codec to use when switching video files, not huge issue, but some may find it annoying. Another is that when I fist was setting it up it wouldn't switch to the HDMI, I had to use the composite video cable to get into the settings and change it. The remote is pretty good, but it has a cheap feeling to it, not a huge concern for me as I use a Harmony 880, but some may not like it.
Overall I think its a great video player for the money and would recommend it to anyone that is looking for an up converting DVD play that plays DivX and Xvid. |

Buyer Beware:
Like many upconverting DVD players, this model will not allow you to upconvert through a standard component (Red, Green, Blue) output. HDMI is absolutely imperative to output to 720p and 1080i.
Now that we have that out of the way, the upconverted output looks absolutely breathtaking on an HD display, especially running a Pixar film or nature documentary. All movies however, show an improved picture quality which certainly will keep me satisfied until the victor of the Blu-ray/HD-DVD debate is declared and prices get driven down by a healthy and stable production.
Until then, it is great to see a picture uncompromised by the low resolution digital/analog/digital conversion process that ruins the DVD viewing experience on HD sets.
Also, this player supports DiVX files and Windows Media files. I have tried playing a DiVX HD trailer I downloaded off of the DiVX website but a message popped up saying "HD Content Not Supported." Whether it is incapable in terms of hardware or merely locked out (by resolution check or some type of DiVX HD certified license). Perhaps someone kind enough to tinker with the firmware can unlock this ability, but I have found none. Otherwise, players endorsed by DiVX on their website can play HD content for a hefty $350+ dollars.
So far IT WILL NOT PLAY HD CONTENT. It will only convert DVD and DivX to higher resolutions for real-time viewing. |

| Bought it at Best Buy brought it home hooked it up and the optical audio cable was loose, the connector kept falling out. Video was scrambled with component cables. Don't know if they are all like this, just got a refund and bought a Sony. |

Plays VCD, and SVCD PAL or NTSC fine on my NTSC tv. Plays DVDs fine and I thought the upconverting @ 720p looked pretty good on my friends LCD HDTV through HDMI. I have not tried any PAL dvds though since I left them at my friend's.
The player will play mpeg and mpeg2 movies untouched as long as the extension ends in .mpg or .mpeg from a CD or DVD. It also will play .mp3 files and .wma files VBR and CBR and it scrolls the id3 tags along the bottom of the screen for both mp3 and wma as well from a CD or DVD.
Plays all versions divx/xvid off of CD-Rs, DVD+Rs and DVD+RW ending in .avi in my tests. For Xvid, I couldn't get movies with .sub files to work (the player detected it but I saw nothing) but I got .ssa subs to work. I have successfully played files at 23.976fps, 25fps, and 29.970fps without flicker at 480i. The preserves the correct aspect ratio of movies whether they are 4:3, 16:9 or 2.35:1 in my tests on a 4:3 tv and 16:9 HDTV if you set the options correctly. Also will play AC3 in 5.1 if the file is encoded with it.
Also will read JPGs off a cd or dvd.
It loads all the files relatively fast, most mp3/wma/jpeg within 5 seconds but divx/xvid takes longer and may take 5-15 seconds. It has played everything I have thrown at it but I must say that it is ugly as hell. The length of file names do not seem to be an issue of any media. Also the player defaults in composite/s-video when you turn it on. You are told to first connect the tv by composite inputs then enable either component interlaced, component progressive, or HDMI in the options, but I have found that you can press the "Progressive button" on the remote to switch between the 4 modes when the disc drive is empty. I'm glad that I bought this player over others as it has served me well. However this is the second unit I have owned. The first one I bought had a disc tray that wouldn't move. The box was squished a little on one end so I suspect it had been dropped.
Overall 9/10, I recommend it to anyone who wants to play downloaded files, or wants 720p/1080i upconversion. |
