This unit play PAL with no problems. Plays well with even the cheap DVDR's from Walmart except that fastforward and reverse at 8x+ is a little choppy and when you hit play hit doesn't always end up where you think it should be at but normal DVD's seem ok. The blue light can be dimmed or turned off in the SETUP MENU. Had it over 1 1/2 years and works perfect and it's a refurbished unit as well.

| Seems to have problems playing burned DVDs, used both Ridata, Maxwell, and Sony DVD-Rs. Avi playback is pretty good. DVDs play good except of the occasional pause. Doesn't remember settings like FLDIM and EPM brightness/sharpness settings. Didn't come with HDMI but my TV has DVI input so cable wasn't too expensive. Picutre quality pretty good for the price. If you have other choices in the $30-60 range then purchase something else. Ugly looking remote for a nice looking player. Region free out of the box, but can be changed with some codes as well. |

| I am not sure if you will get a good one or not if you purchase this. I am fortunate enough to get a good one since I have yet to see any problems with my unit. Divx and Xvid work flawlessly every time. I switched from using my Xbox to this so I can watch Divx converted movies and store about 4 or 5 movies to a DVD. Mine did not come with a HDMI cable so that set me back another 65.00 but that was ok since I wanted to stick with Toshiba since my HD TV is Toshiba and I knew I could use most of the functionality of my Toshiba TV remote. |

Complete CRAP!
It is the only DVD player I have ever owned that does NOT play DVDs.
Store bought DVDs froze the system in the loading stage. DivX files are completely unreadable UNLESS burned to CD media.
Don't waste your time. |

This player DOES NOT come with an HDMI cable. Instead it's packed with a standard RCA cables. Alot of my DVD+Rs, DVD-Rs, didn't work (i'm going HDTV which my cyberhome 300s doesn't support). Brands attempted to use wereSony, Maxell, Verbatim and very few worked :(.
heres the major Downfall of the player: You Can Not Get 720p or 1080i without the HDMI cable.
Well since those cables are in the $99+ range it makes this player barely worth it. My Suggestion, stay away...

| This player is fine for teh first couple of months and then everything you try to play on it either freezes, skips, or won't play at all. This player is a piece of ^&%$^. Toshiba knows this as well. Even the $30 players have a better warranty. The Toshiba has only a 90 day warranty. That is ridiculous. Wish I had looked at this when I purchased it. Spen your money elsewhere when looking for a good or even decent player. |

Pros:
*HDMI
*Upscaling
*Free HDMI Cable
*Price is right
Cons:
*Audio problems, won't output DTS through HDMI when playing SuperBit discs, had to swtich to Dolby.
*More Audio problems, won't play Divx/Xvid sound, had to reset/reboot, and then miraculously sound comes back. Hit or Miss on this one, not sure what the deal is.
*Audio sync problems, will restore sync after reboot.
*Video problems: Major ghosting, macroblocking on HD ripped Divx/Xvid, even though the video meets the DVD's avi resolution requirement.
*Can't switch through .srt subtitles during playback, had to designate a subtitle in the beginning.
*Can't play idx/sub subtitles for Divx, Xvid, major setback for foreign movies.
*No active firmware upgrade
Overall, you pay what you get. Nothing is perfect, expect better players once DivX Ultra Certified players hit the market. But you never know, since AT&T is suing everyone over mpeg 4 copyright infringements. |

| Comments: |
I just purchased this player and have used it in conjunction with my new 26" widescreen HDTV. I was actually really impressed. Here's what I like/don't like so far (I've only had it one day so keep that in mind).
Pros:
-Very slim design
-Supports all of my Divx/XVid files I burned on DVD+R using Nero to burn as data discs.
-There is a setting to set playback to a 16:9 widescreen television. At first, when I used the DVD player, it had black bars around every side on a widescreen movie, but this is easily changed in the setup menu.
-I have gotten really great remote angles with this unit. I was actually sitting behind the unit and it still picked up the signal somehow.
-Unlike other HDMI players, there is no audio sync issues.
-Testing against the RCA component feed, the HDMI output colors are so much more vibrant. I guess this is more of a praise for HDMI than the player, but it's *REALLY* stunning.
-I have noticed a lot of other people stating that this won't burned backed up DVD's or DVD+R's. I tried up DVD's (DVD-9's compressed to single layer DVD-R), home-made DVD-R's and DVD+R's, and DVD+R's with Xvid/Divx files burned as a data disc. The player read every disc that I put in.
Neutrals:
-Some users have stated that the blue light on the front of the DVD player is distracting. I can see how it could be, but I'm sure there's some way to put paper on the front or just keep the DVD box in front of the light. To clarify, the light is completely along the front of the DVD tray. I don't find it distracting, but can see how others could. Definitely not a reason not to buy this DVD player.
Cons:
-I watched one movie tonight and tested many others. In the full-length movie that I watched, the player did stop/freeze twice - once about 45 minutes in and then again with about 20 minutes left. It froze for about 3 seconds and then picked right back up again. I knew that this was an issue before I purchased the unit - since it is one of the cheaper Divx/XVid HD Upconvert Players out there, I am willing to sacrifice this.
-Xvid/Divx won't output a digital signal through the HDMI - I had to run the RCA component audio cables to get audio. This may be an encoding problem on my end, however.
-One reason I purchased this unit because I thought I had read that it came bundled with an HDMI cable. I may have read wrong information or had looked at something else, but the only cable included in the box is an RCA component cable. Having to shell out another $50-$100 on top of the price of the player is not a very fun thing.
-I can see some minor macroblocking, but mostly in older, non-digital movies. I watched "Hitch" tonight, which came out at the end of last year, and this wasn't a problem in that movie.
Bottom line: This is a good player from what I've seen so far. It does [just about] everything that I had hoped it would do, and a little bit more that I wasn't expecting. I would recommend this item with a few caveats: if you are super picky, don't buy it. The blue light issue and the "freezing" issue may be too much for you to handle. But if you're looking for an inexpensive player that basically does what it says it does, then this player is for you. |

| It's a nice looking player, it's played all the xvid and divx files i've thrown at it ones with q-pel, bidirectionally encoded frames. No problem with my cheap maxell 8X dvd-r's but it hates the maxell 8X dvd+r's for some reason won't play them at all. But it did play some cheap Memorex dual layer dvd+r's with divx files so i don't know i burnt all my movies with the sony dru-710a. The drive tray moves slow compared to my lg lda-530 and the menu's aren't as nice but i bought it because i wanted a new player that supported q-pel,gmc,and b-vop. I would have rather of purchased the LG LDA-531 but the futureshop employee told me they were recalled, so i'm stuck with a not bad player, hope i can fix the dvd+r problem with the bitsetting. |

Not sure about some of the other comments, but here are mine. I wanted a good divx/xvid player along with normal DVD-R and vcd and svcd's. I went through 4 different players in past week and each one would not see the DVD-R or play xvid good. So I decided on the Toshiba SD-4980SU. This is the best dvd player I have ever owned, picture quality was much better than my other dvd player and is simple to use. I connected it the same way as the other dvd player I had using component outs and in progressive scan setting. First disc I tried was a cheap Nexxtech DVD-R loaded with about 9 tv shows in xvid format and played them without a flaw. It takes about 3 seconds to load and plays the first xvid video on DVD. If you hit stop, it brings a menu up to select the one you want to watch. I've had problems on other dvd players with the Nexxtech dvd-r's and blocky problems and freezing. The Toshiba played them Perfect! Not one pause or freezing at all and picture was beyond my expectations. I am using a JVC 65 inch I ART tv and this dvd player compliments it prefect. Even the colors are the same(silver with a blue LED line in front). It also has a nice slim design, but the only reason I gave it a 9 instead of 10 was the small remote. I have the inputs on my JVC tv for HDMI, but the picture quality is so good now, I can't really see why I would need it. Here is a listing of what has worked so far without a flaw:
DVD-R copies of DVD using DVD santa
DVD-R with movies converted from rars using alcohol
Original DVD's
DVD-R with several xvid movies and tv shows
DVD-R with divx(this is a divx certified player)
CD-R with CBR MP3's
VCD on cheap and good media(from vers to nexxtech)
SVCD on same type media
I will test it over the next few days with other media to see what it can do, but so far this is a top player in my book. I am not sure why I seen on other posts that DVD-R will not work with xvid or it can't play copied movies. I haven't had one yet that had any problems. I may buy this same player for my room now that I know how good it plays all my media.

| I bought it for DIVX/XVID. It shows everything I have; only two files were without sound. It supports subtitles for DIVX in different languages. The big issue is a video quality for regular DVDs. Yea; all my old DVD players (JVC, Philips, Sony, and Toshiba DVD Recorder) have more saturated colors. May be I just got a “lemon”. |

Great player. Fantastic picture quality with standard DVD's. Seems to play everything except DivX-HD.
Costco (in U.S.) has started selling this player, with an included HDMI cable, for $80. However they are calling it model SD-K850.
Uses the Zoran Vaddis 778 "HDXtreme" chipset. |

Pros:
Produces a near HDTV quality picture (when using component video).
Plays just about everything imaginable, including KVCD, MicroDVD, PAL video, MPeG4 (multi-b frames, GMC, Qpel, packed bitstream, etc).
After using this player for a couple of weeks, I haven't encountered any video that it can't play. It even plays the few videos that my Philips 642 cannot.
Cons:
HDMI will not necessarily improve your picture quality. What HDMI appears to do is smoothly zoom video to fit an HDTV screen. However, your HDTV probably already does this, and may do a better job of it than the SD-4980.
DVD tray feels a little flimsy. |

this is a bad player. it won't play all dvd9 to dvd5 compressed movies. i purchased it because i previously owned a toshiba sd3900 dvd player and wanted an updated dvd player. i bought this because it had not only gave me trust on the company from previous experiences and because it offers the capability of playing divx movies on cd as well as the hd capability. i purchased it yesterday, 11-07-2005 from my local bestbuy for $135 tax not included and will be returning it the next day.
i used 3 different movies, 2 were industry made and the other was an imported asian movie. the 3 movies were written using princo and imation discs written in 4x first then 8x. i used pinnacle(ver.8) and shrink(latest) and compressed all of it with automatic compression on will all features, menues, etc on. one of the 2 industry films played(one was an old film(somewhere around 2001) and the other was a newer one(2005). the older one played. for the imported movie, it didn't play. all it had was just the movie part with only chapters. it played on the toshiba sd3900 but didn't play on the toshiba sd4980.
**THIS IS NOT A GOOD DVD PLAYER.**
