The player does what it is supposed to do. I had it upgraded to all zone and was able to read zone 2 DVDs. DVD+R DL are played if burned properly. I used Nero 6 platinum and the player wouldn't read dual layer disc. But when updated Nero to version 6.6, I burned one DVD9 and surprise, the player was able to read it without a glitch. I didn't noticed any pause when switching from layer 1 to 2. I paid it $69 long time ago.

I saw someone here say that DVD+R DL don't work, and this scared me cause I had a certain DVD that would not Shrink (it hung DVD Shrink) and I knew I would have to take it DL -> DL. So I picked up some DVD+R DL discs at Staples, they're Memorex brand, 2.4x speed, and show a media code of Ritek. Did an ISO Write with DVD Decrypter, placed it in the SD4900 and crossed my fingers... and... IT WORKED. Perfectly. So whoever said DVD+R DL don't play in the SD4900, you're wrong!

This player has a very nice picture and handles DVD-R/+R, VCD, SVCD, Mp3, WMA. The region-free and SVCD-enable hacks work perfectly. I have not had any of the problems mentioned, like a noisy disc drive with SVCD. I think one of the most impressive things about this player is a faster-than-average load and seek time..it's quite fast.

I tried many different brands of media and couldn't find one it didn't play...from some off-brands to the common brand name discs.

Great player. The Digital Noise Reduction circuitry actually works, too..as does the dynamic range control. This would NOT, however, be a good player for the kids' room, as the drawer loader is not as sturdy as I'd like it to be. It does, however, open and close smoothly. It just won't tolerate much abuse, I suspect.

I suppose we can't have everything. Even the venerable Pioneer machines don't always have the most solid drawers out there.

I didn't give this player the perfect score because of the drawer, but if I could've given it a 9 1/2 I'd have done so.

Good job, Toshiba!

I have to respond to the previous post. It's obvious he had a defective player and why he would just assume these problems, that only he has magically discovered, are attributed to all SD-4900's, is just silly.

I have two of these units and I have never had a problem with DVD's or other media locking up. Also, VCD's and SVCD's play better on this unit than on my Pioneer DV-343 which was previously the champ of VCD/SVCD playback. In fact, I thought I was going to have to keep my Pioneer on hand and just use the SD-4900 for Region free playback, but I have tested all my "hard to play" VCD's and SVCD's, including non standard compliant ones, and they play flawlessly. Even ones that won't play on the successor to the DV-343 (forget the model number) will play just fine. I also like the fact that you can pause SVCD's on this unit; something you can't do on the Pioneer's.

Yes it does have a clicking noise when playing SVCD but it's not that bad; especially when you have the volume turned up.

Just a tip to those who buy a DVD player...If it locks up "frequently" take it back and exchange it for another.

Not recommended. Overpriced for what (little) it does. You can buy a 5-disc changer for the same price.

I bought this on the strength of the reviews here, since I wanted *good* PAL->NTSC conversion on DVDs.

With the hack, this player can output NTSC for a PAL DVD input, as noted here. So far, so good.

Picture quality is good, although inferior on some SVCD titles to that of Pioneer and Panasonic players to which it was being compared.

Unlike some others here, I found the remote to be well laid out, certainly superior in layout to the Pioneer.

That's the good news.

The bad news follows:

This is not a 'solid' or 'stable' player. Several times during the course of testing, it locked up on loading various media. The result was no keypad response, no reaction when pressing buttons on the player, disc wouldn't eject etc. The screen display (ie the blue 'Welcome' background) remained frozen on the TV. After about 5 minutes of this, the only way to recover was to unplug the power. This has never happened (with the same, standard-compliant discs) on other players.

As another reviewer noted, this thing is *noisy* when playing SVCD. It exhibits a constant clicking, like a hard drive seeking sound. It gets very annoying and is only really tolerable if the unit is in a cabinet or if one is using headphones which isolate/mask this noise. This is probably not an issue if you're not a SVCD viewer. The drive does indeed seem to be continuously seeking while playing SVCDs (maybe because it needs to be hacked to play SVCDs in the first place).

Disc spin-down is also quite audible, but not really an issue except as an indicator of generally poor attention to ergonomics.

SVCD playback (NTSC) was at times erratic. Near the start of several (compliant) NTSC SVCDs (on clean media), playback would freeze for a fraction of a second, then resume. The problem seemed worse with CDRW media vs. CD-R, but regardless this didn't happen with the same discs in Pioneer or Panasonic players.

As for PAL->NTSC, there was notable stuttering on some high-action scenes, almost as if the unit could just barely handle the bitrate (which was well below the maximum for DVD standards compliance). Despite this jerkiness, audio never desynced, which is good.

This unit won't play a secondary audio track on SVCDs. Period. It seems totally unaware of their existence, despite them (again) playing fine on Pioneer and Panasonic players.

Final result: this unit, while working fine, is being returned for a refund for the deficiencies noted above.

I just thought I would let anyone interested know, that on May 6,2004, I purchased online from Crutchfield, A Toshiba SD4900 (which they list as a "new" item),for $79.99 plus shipping. It appears to be region free out of the box. I just played an Australian area 4 DVD (The music group-THE SEEKERS), which I also purchased online, from an HMV store in Sydney, Australia. I feel confident it will play other area DVDs, especially PAL format.I have only had it hooked up 1 day, and am looking forward trying it out on other formats. Thank all of you who helped me out with your comment inputs.

The 4900 does a much better job of playing DVD-R discs than the 3900 does. Having owned both machines, there are a handful of my -R discs that wouldn't play properly on the 3900 that *DO* play perfectly on the 4900. I have a standalone Panasonic DMR-E80H DVD Recorder and was disappointed that the 3900 didn't handle all of them; obviously Toshiba made some serious upgrades in terms of the 4900 compatability with DVD-R discs, because I haven't run into any problem.

So, from my experience, I obviously would completely disagree with some of the below posts that the 4900 doesn't do a great job with DVD-Rs that have been authored by standalone DVD Recorders. In fact, it's MUCH BETTER than the 3900 in terms of compatability on that score.

Otherwise, the PAL-NTSC conversion is perfect on all sets, it does a superb job with the progressive scan, and I can't recommend it highly enough. Forget the low-cost cheapo players that can do PAL and say they'll play everything -- it's far better to plunk a few extra dollars down on a piece of quality equipment like the 4900 that CAN play everything, and will last a lot longer for you too!

Works on all CD-R/W and DVDR/W dics, from cheap to expensive discs. I use DVDXCopy and Nero to burn. I have never had any problems playing any VCD or DVD as I have never tried an SVCD. All Menus work on burned media granted there is a menu. There are no problems playing DVD or DVDR/W discs. I burned an MP3 DVD using Nero's DVD Data mode and it worked, as long as they are a constant bitrate as variable doesn't work.

The only problem I have ever had with it is the tray got stuck open once, but that was easily fixed by pushing it back in. I highly recommend this DVD player for those on limited budgets.

The SD-4900 is a great player except for one MAJOR flaw when it comes to playing DVD-R/+R discs...

The SD-4900 has problem with DVD-Rs that are authored on a stand alone DVD recorder.

I've noticed on every single DVD that was created on a stand alone recorder, the frame rate will drop and the video image will slow down for a second or two every so often. Audio does not miss a beat, but the slow down and frame drops are very annoying, as I have many rock concerts that were originally authored on stand alone recorders....

Any idea if this problem is repairable via a firmware hack?

Thanks!

Tested a CD-RW with pictures and Music and works fine. Remote is much nicer that the RCA one.

Just picked up this player today from BestBuy which was 10 bucks cheaper than Fry's.

I needed a player to play DVD-R and after searching this site saw some good and bad reviews for the Toshiba. This unit plays DVD-R discs perfectly. I am using cheap-no-name DVD-R media burned with a cheap Emprex DVD burner and movies play great -- no artifacts, etc.

This unit is replacing an RCA RC5240P that although "plays" DVD-R, there were tons of artifacts. This Toshiba has no trouble playing the same discs with no artifacts.

I highly recommend this unit for DVD-R -- havent tried any other formats.

One day I walked into A&B Sound and wanted to test their DVD players. I pulled out my cd case and tested this model (and others) with Maxell 4x, Princo 4x, and some other generic DVD-Rs. This machine played DVD's backed up by DVDshrink, DVDXCopy, and the Big-3 Method using either Alcohol 120 or Nero to Burn. It even played a DVD-R that I had screwed up an IFO.

The Box does not mention that it plays DVD-RWs, but from enough reading, I speculated that if it reads DVD-Rs, it will read a DVD-RW. When I brought it home, I was proven correct with a Maxell DVD-RW. Later I will test DVD+R/W.

Additionally, it played VCD's well, but not my SVCDs. However, it played my SVCD with the header trick. From reading other reviews, there are other ways to get it to read SVCDs.

It does play MP3s with only 8.3 support and up to 320 kbs VBR. It has a random function and can hold a 30 song playlist. It did play a DVD-RW with 4.7G of MP3s, which the box and manual failed to mention. I wonder if it plays DVD-Rs with VCD directories burned on? Only one way to try.

So Why am I only giving it an 8? The reason being, that MP3 playback does not use a screensaver. Who wants to yank out the video signal cable(s) so they don't burn an image on their screen. Mind you, very few DVD players have screen savers on MP3 playback. Maybe some home theater people out there know a way around that dilemna. This player also lacks ID3 tag support for MP3s. Additionally, I gave it only an 8 because the remote control is somewhat gay. The useful buttons don't light up. I think they are slightly luminescent(sp), but I can't guarantee that. Additionally, I think some of the buttons are in wierd places.

All in all, a great player that has played everything it claims to play and more (DVD-RW and DVD-R/Ws with MP3s). It does not appear to be fussy about about DVD-R media quality, but your mileage may vary.

Got this from Amazon.com and can confirm that the player does not remember where the movie was last stopped if powered off. Auto-powers off after 10 minutes of inactivity (not sure if I can change this).

Played SVCD's perfectly after easy EEPROM code change with the remote, as described at http://www.math.uga.edu/~djb/html/dvd.html

Tested with numerous Memorex 4X DVD+R (RICOHJPN01); worked flawlessly (and as many others have reported, Toshiba does not specifically say it supports DVD+R, only DVD-R).

I highly recommend this player. Truly flawless PAL to NTSC conversion. Solid remote. Great compatibility so far. Well worth the $85.00 I paid for it.

I read reviews in Amazon saying that the SD-4900 lacks of these 2 features:
1. No counting back timer to see how much time is left for the movie to run.
2. Player does not remember where the movice was last stopped.

Is this true? Both features are standard and hard to believe it is true.

Does this model play movies (not jpegs or mp3s) recorded on DVD+-R/RW ?

Thanks,
Tom.

This player is really nice! Good picture, plays even more media then my old Apex. Fished a couple of 4x Maxell DVD-R's out of the trash that I though were bad on the Mitsubishi DVD player(that went back to the store due to dissatisfaction) and they played fine on this champ.

Tried VCD, and it played, but looked a little jerky (don't remember how I authored it, could easily be my fault). SVCD plays smooth and good after the player hack (hack uses remote). Region hack appears to work (using burned CD), but I don't have a non region 1 disk to try. Am looking forward to getting a couple region 2 PAL DVDs to see how the hack and the PAL to NTSC works (others report good results).

Threw in one of my CDR's with JPEGs in directories, the slideshow feature works really nice, though loading could be a bit faster. The nav buttons on the remote flip, mirror, and rotate the image. Images looked good, way better than the Mitsubishi. Need to burn some pix on a DVD+R and see if that works.

Black level management is very nice, brings out the detail on my InFocus X1 projector that otherwise gets lost.

Haven't tried the 5.1 decoder outputs, or the progressive scan yet. Nice to know they are there.

I'm very happy with this all around excellent player. And after the easy-to-apply hacks, I'm even happier. This one's a keeper!
