A few artifacts on occasional commercial DVD's and home-made jobs, but not much of this. Plays every DVD and VCD I've burned so far. Has a gorgeous picture, OK audio with slight distortion but full sound. The picture is absolutely gorgeous for this price range, does wonders with a good 1940's Technicolor transfer and old b&w is very rich. Composite output seems a tad better than S-Video. Component video out = OK, but too much trouble to correct with my tv controls. I tried Monster Cable with this unit and threw Monster away, it sucks; the cheap-but-good OEM wire seems a perfect match for this unit, gives a great picture. Good menu, has features not found on pricier stuff. Overall, better than Toshiba's current line so I'm sticking with it.

Plays piece of cr*p DVD-R's but stalls out on high quality Maxell 4x DVD+R's :-(

Also has stalled out on Mp3's CD-R since day one - plays fine for a few tracks then you have to manually push to the next track! (A pain at parties).

Tood bad - it seems fine otherwise. i guess i'll buy a <$100 import that plays everyting.

Not too many complaints. The picture is OK for an older player. The audio seems to be a bit lacking.

Major complaints: Have had some trouble with various DVD-R and DVD+R media. Additionally, discs authored with TMPGEnc DVD Author (1.5.20.62) do not generate audio!?

DVDShrink authored discs are also problematic.

Better players out there.

Just thought I would add my two cents about DVD+R and +RW. This player plays any and all discs burned on my standalone Phillips burner -- all recording speeds as well. It's plays them very smoothly as well -- a little better than my newer Toshiba SD 3900, actually, and a bit sharper.

Absolutely positively a piece of garbage! From the 5 seconds to open the drawer to not playing the vast vast majority DVD+R's I cook (Nero, Roxio, DVD X Copy, DCS DVD, Any DVD all tried). My Sony and JVC players like the DVD+r's this one doesnt. Pathetic technical support from Toshiba. Look on Ebay you will find a great deal on mine, buying a refurb JVC to replace it.

I will be happy to share my exasperation with this unit with anyone who wants to email me.

TDK DVD-R created by Sony DRU500A didn't play correctly. I put one hour long home video in it and it played only the half way. TDK DVD+R and Sony DVD+RW created in exactly the same way play flawlessly. I'm surprised because this player is supposed to play DVD-R and it doesn't even mention about DVD+R in the manual.
Plays MP3 fine. It shows the folder names and 8 letter file names.
Anyway, the quality of image still amazes me. Stunning colors!

I use DVDDECRYPTER, then DVDSHRINK (if needed) and then burn an image with Nero and burn a DVD from That. I have tried Many Brands and all types (except DVD-RW) media and all seem to work the same. This player stops and starts when playing ALL TYPES OF RECORDED DVD-/+R Media, no matter what speed or brand...4x media burned at 1x, 2x or 4x. It will only stop for a split second and you may miss a bit of audio usually. It DOES However, play DVD+RW media perfectly without a hitch; I can reburn these same DVD+RW to a DVD-r/+r disc and it may not play them at all. I like the player for svcd's with the vcd header trick. It plays all that I have made or borrowed without a problem, as long as the header trick is employed. I bought a Phillips 783C for playing DVD media I burn myself. The toshiba has a slightly better picture and an infinitly better remote and features but leaves a lot to be desired for recorded dvd media. I use a sony DRU 500AX burner and Nero enterprise fro making DVD's.

Just thought I'd let people know a thing about playing SVCD with the header trick.... If you notice pixilation / skips... I was able to fix this by burining the exact same image, same media, at a lower speed. In EVERY case (about 10-15 movies in tricked SVCD format) had perfect playback when burned at slower speed.... Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Bought for my den home theater system with 5.1 surround sound system. TV is non-HD, so progressive scan not a benefit for me. Works fine with std. DVD movies. DVD-Audio is a cool feature, but with the lack of available material is really a near useless feature.

Ok, here's the problem. I've burned VCD's SVCD's and tricked header SVCD's on various quality CD-R media. Only one video (tricked-SVCD on high quality media) palyed well. All others freeze, pixalate, etc. Standard SVCD is not supported.

Bought a Mintek DVD-1600 as a 2nd DVD player for our master bedroom. No surround sound, just an old 20" Panasonic TV. Guess what, all DVDs, SVCDs, VCDs & Kodak Picture CDs play perfectly. Cost was 25% of what the Toshiba set me back! Granted, no progressive scan or DVD-Audio support.

Conclusion: I cannot recommend the Toshiba SD-4800 due to problems with VCD & (tricked header) SVCD playback.

Just picked this up today and have had little test time on it. It looks as though it is a great player.

Had a AKAI DVPS760 that freezes on most DVD-Rs and had to find a solution.

The Toshiba hasn't froze once on the discs I had the most problems with.

FYI - make sure to include an AUDIO_TS folder when burning your discs. If you don't, the player locks up when you insert the disc and you have to pull the plug.

My Panasonic RD-31 broko after only 1 year of usage and I bought Toshiba SD4800. What a difference. The quality of image/sound is considerably better than Panasonic. Black is darker and the colors are vivid. The sound is crystal clear. Panasonic played DVD-R but not +R(W) and MP3 played without file names. This Toshiba plays -R (as it's confirmed in the manual), +R(W) as well even if it's not written that it supports in the manual. The media brands I used are TDK and Sony, burnt on Sony DRU500A, 1.0g. MP3 playback is superb. It shows the folder name and the first 8 letters of the title, which makes it easy to choose a specific song out of, say, 200 files on 1 CD-R. Haven't tried Digital Photo Viewer yet. It says it supports Fuji Color CD, Kodak Picture CD, Noritsu QSS CD and Canon. I just don't know how to make a Picture CD at home! Could anyone tell me how in order to play on SD4800, please?

I bought this player a little while ago and it has worked great. However, I recently tried to play a SVCD and was disappointed to find it did not work. I was able to get it to play with the trick header though and it has played other VCDs fine. Yet if I had realized then that it didn't play SVCD I probably would have went with a different player. Well, at least the trick works.

I bought this machine at Best Buy for $175 and returned a Samsung P421 because I hated it (see my review).

Unfortunately the player will "play" DVD+R's but the image on you TV screen wil be flickery and doubled, sound will be fine.

DVD Audio performance is exceptional and so is the 3:2 pulldown prog scan. The on screen menu's are firs class as they always have been with Toshiba.

Alas, I must bid farewell to this machine as well. It would have been my third Toshiba in 4 years.

The 9/10 rating would have ben a 10/10 if the DVD+R disc would have played and I would have kept this machine.

Great player, superb picture. Works with compliant VCD and xVCD. Plays SVCD with tricked header (non-compliant VCD header). MP3 on CD/CD-RW supported.

My only (and key issue) is DVD-R support. It played only one of my 6 DVD-R (all created with different mehtods) on Memorex DVD-Rs. All Sony players tested played all 6 of my DVD-Rs.

If I could get DVD-R to work this is the perfect DVD player, with "Squeeze Mode" and 1.25 Zoom features weighing in prominantly.

I bought this player specifically because it was progressive scan *and* played DVD-R's. The only weird thing about it is that when it's in progressive mode, it stretches the menu overlays to 16:9 if the DVD is a 4:3 display. It's a minor annoyance.

Comments:
This player has a lot of great features and a few little annoying ones. I.E. You cannot fastforward MP3s and the title length of MP3s must be ISO9600 compliant (MAX 8 Character names).

CD-R and CD-RW seems to work fine (both 650 and 700MB). I don't have a DVD burner yet so I haven't gotten around to testing that but Toshiba claims that it's compatible with DVD-R.

I made one test of a miniDVD with the regular default settings on TMPGEnc with no success. I tried SVCD's default settins as well as an XVCD using MPEG2 but neither worked.

VCD and XVCD's work great but I tested only up to a CBR of 4500 (video). The max resolution seems to be 704x480. 720x480 doesn't work (DVD resolution).

The progressive feature is really nice and has a handy button on the remote to change from interlaced to progressive scan so you don't have to get up and change it at the player.

Having previously owned a Sony DVP-S330, I would say that this player is a lot better and by far the best player out there (for an affordable price). There is one annoying thing that the player cannot do and that is show the time remaining on a track. But, everything else is good to great.
