Plays PAL although there is no documentation to support this. Who cares what they say -- it's what it does that matters.

Crummy remote with too many tiny buttons and a confusing layout; flimsy disk tray that seems likely to fall off each time you open it (although I've had my 3990 over 18 months with no problems); and no optical audio out, coax only.

My 3990 has started having difficultly reading some disks over the last few months. I suspect the laser has gotten old and lost some of its power. I tried cleaning the lens but that did not appear to make any difference. Of course, in this day of disposable electronics from China I guess about one year of solid operation is the best you can hope for. Cost less than $50.

After getting rid of my xbox I bought this dvd player for my bedroom.
It worked fine playing dvd-r's and divx and avi anime files(640X480 files will crop the top and bottom letting you read only the upper half of the first line of subtitles).
But after 2 months the player stopped loading discs or if it would load them they would freeze in midplay like if they had serious scratches (even though they where none).
I called Toshiba and they sent me a new one .Guess what?
Im already on the third unit (with the same problem). So far they had lasted only 2 months of almost everyday use with 2 movie viewings a day!!
So If you would like to pay for shipping this to Toshiba every 2 months be my guest and buy one.

Already have tried a ocuple DivX players - i own a Daytek one that isn't too bad. Wanted to pick up a couple for xmas presents and read here that this one was pretty good.

pros:
- smooth/quiet operation, decent remote, better chassis look than most of the budget players
- havent seen issues with skipping or audio syncing like i get with my Daytek

cons:
- very surprised to find out it can't play random through ALL mp3 tracks - if you have folders it will only play what is in the current folder; and you then need to select a different folder (really stupid!!).
- also, i had a CD-R with an AVI on it that was jerky on my Daytek - i reburned to a DVD and no issue - thought i would try same CD on this unit to see how it compared.. it wouldnt even load.

It's a great player. I had problems playing DVD+R DL discs on my Sony NS700P so after looking at these reviews I decided to try it. So far everything I throw at it works great. I was surprised that the picture quality was better also. The only downfalls to this player is the cheap remote (not that bad) and the lack of optical-audio output.

plays basically everything. You can even play raw mp3 by renaming them to .mpg or .mpeg though there's really no need since you can play divx, avi, mp4 and xvid files. One problem I've noticed is that some of the divx files will have no sound but the video plays fine...."what gives"? At first I thought is was a bit rate problem because the first two movies to play without audio were both mp3 192....so I burned one at 128kb and got the same problem. So I checked though my collection of movies that worked..... some of them have the exact same audio as the ones that worked. I cant figure it out....it doesnt make cents why one would play perfect and the other has no sound. Dont be scared to post if you know the answer. Thanks in advance!!!

I use the player for xvid mostly. Have burned alot, like 12 40 min ep to one dvd and it plays fine. Quality is great and xvids that were higher res like 700x400 that would be strechted a lil on my norcent is displayed at right resolution. ONLY PROBLEM IS!!!- Only probelm is it seems xvids with audio mp3 bitrate of 192 will not play while the video is playing. Has anyone else experienced this? Can someone please help me tell me if there a easy program to reencode just the audio to slightly lower bitrate without touching the vidoe? Thanks

I am Amending my below review - where I said I was going to return the player:

Where I wrote
"Automatic-aspect-ratio feature. This feature causes the player to play anamorphic titles in FULL mode, 4:3 ratio titles in NARROW mode, and 4:3 letterbox title in ZOOM mode. It also applies that feature to DIVX and DVD titles."
I will amend to say that it does not appear to do auto-aspect ratio on DVD titles. Which is too bad, but fairly typical

Where I wrote
"Picky about mp4 formats"
I will amend to say that it only doesn't like MS MP4V2 files (I have since re-encoded all my stuff - no mean feat), and loves all the other divx/xvid varieties (no OGG audio, but easy enough to fix). And it won't play any file wider than 704 pixels.

Where I wrote
"Buggy behavior navigating divx/xvid titles. Sometimes a title would play without sound. Sometimes a perfectly good title would refuse to play (after already playing). I had to shut off the player and restart it to get it to work sometimes. "

I will amend to say that the above were media issues. It hated a lot of my discs that had labels, dvd-video or divx. especially when the laser approached the outer edge. Copying onto unlabeled discs made this problem go away. It's too bad they couldn't put a heartier reader in this player.

So my new bottom line is that it's a great player. Do not label your discs ever. I did not return it after all.

I'm adding here to my own prior comment. I have to say the player will not play "HD" XviD... in this case a 800x336 XviD: "HD no supported" is the exact message the player gives me. Or is it because of the ATSC/A-52 AC3 track?? It must refer to the video. I think this is critical for people looking to play some of those HD XviD tv shows/movies. It may be that a firmware upgrade could remove this limitation. I mean, manufacturers should let the hardware try to decode instead of setting arbitrary limitations.

I wish someone would test this further.

Also tried the subs. I had many .srt files for a single movie.. so I named them the same as the avi.. no use, since as soon as there are srt files on a dvd archive the player will ask if you want to use any or none of them each time you start a movie from that disc. The subs are annoyingly at the 55% lower mark of the screen i.e. pretty much in the middle. This, as suggested, should be corrected through a firmware update... TOSHIBA!!

I have bought this for XviD/DivX playback mainly and I must say you should read with caution the last 2 newb bashing comments from Canada. Of course, ppl that buy crappy cds/dvds (I would say all media except Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim)and don't understand what a cc code is and can't even understand that 3.11 is not the same as xvid, ppl that don't know what booktype setting is - well, those ppl are ignorant and should not be trusted in this case.

I advise those people to burn dvd using standard software and at least run a cd/dvd quality test from Nero... of course if the quality is close to 0 with terrible pi errors then it'll be choppy or bad disc, and some players will do more correction than others but this review is not about error correction capabilities for newbs... you don't judge a player from crappy media/encoding/source.

I can say I've played from an old 3.11 encoding with terrible keyframing to more recent xvid without any problems (35 episodes of Goldorak, 10-15 UFC/Pride files, movies : hackers, robocop, lucky Slevin, etc). I seem to remember the player refusing to play some aforementionned stuff but a simple open/close tray solved the issue.

Of course, the more obscure the encoding process, the lower the chances of success at playback. I've noted poor performance in ff/rew with many files... but then again, this is mostly due to choices of ppl who encode this stuff, as avi is not a linear binary like mpeg2 so you shouldn't expect the same precision anyway...

A noteworthy feature is the "A-B repeat" feature, which will appeal to music people... yeah, usually this little feature appears only on higher end products.

Ok, the disc tray is nothing short of crappy. I wish they had done a slide-in dvd mechanism instead of this but hey, this player is affordable and very well suited for divx. I also find it pretty quiet.

Overall a nice price/quality deal. Ideal for xvid. Obviously I've had the player only recently so time will tell. Stick to good media to avoid problems.

I just bought and returned this machine.

While the basic dvd functionality seems to work fine, the Divx mode is very poor. I have a cheap Kaco dvd player that plays most of the stuff I had (although not all), while the Toshiba only recognized 1 out of 10.

I think part of the problem is that I have only DVD+R or DVD+RW.... still a new "brand name" player should recognize most common formats.

Would not recommend it... I now have an LG machine and that one seems to work fine.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this player. Picture quality for dvd is excellent. Response time is quick for all its functions. It plays all my DivX/Xvid titles. I agree with the previous reviewer regarding the display of subtitles for DivX being in the awkward position near the center of the screen. I watch a lot of foreign movies and this is annoying. I think this player only recognizes DivX subtitles with a .srt file extension. I tested several DivX movies that have subtitle files with .sub & .idx extensions and this player would not display the subtitles no matter how hard I tried. My LG player and my PC has no problem displaying this subtitle format. I'm just hoping Toshiba would release a firmware update to fix these subtitle problems.

Gave this a 9 out of 10 but it is almost a 10. Far superior to the philips dvp 642. I have 2 of those. Absolutely great for playing Divx and xvid. It also plays the higher bit rate xvid/divx movies that the philips dvp 642 soes not play. So much more quiter than the philips 642 as well. Only problem I see do far that bothers me is... the subtitles.
It plays subtitles great and you can select any subtitle you want, except that the subtitles is almost in the middle of the screen instead of at the very bottom as I would like. Anyone else check out this with the subtitles or is it just me???

This can play MP3's on DVD, but it will only play one album/folder at a time. You have to manually skip to the next folder. I read the entire manual and there doesn't seem to be a way around this. I decided to get the Sony DVP-NS55P, which will play all the tracks automatically.

As additional information.
FF/Frev at 2X, 8X, 30X and 100X.
3 levels of Zoom, It Can Zoom a paused video. The Zoomed portion can be moved around the screen using the arrow keys if what you zoomed to see is off center.
haven't played with the sound enhancement feature yet.
Picture adjustments for brightness allows you to decrease or increase briteness and the sharpness adjustment allows you to sharpen or soften the image.
Slo-Mo has 1/2, 1/4, & I believe the third was 1/8 speed forward or reverse. Not necessary to pause first as on some players.
Pause the video and every press of the pause button steps forward once.
Next and Previous buttons work on chapters in DVD and with AVI/MPGs takes you to the next clip or back to the start of the one being viewed for one press

Standard Xvid/Divx start playing with reasonable speed. Looks like I'll be picking up another for another room and maybe a 3rd as a gift. Good price and nice feature set.

Quiet compared to my older Apexes that sometimes make noise from out of balance discs. Sony I can hear the laser seeking when it goes to different features of the DVD. This one Has no bright light to distract in a dark room like the Sony changers does. Display only shows a 4 for example if I'm playing the fourth Divx clip and a light around the power button when on.

Well I bought this player to play Divx/xvid.

Plays standard Divx/Xvid fine. Didin't like OGG audio, No surprise their. Played Mixed DVD disc. Mpeg, Divx, Xvid, Jpg, PAL and NTSC out to NTSC TV.

Small size, Tray seems a little flimsy. Basic display only shows what title you are playing on the DVD. Display is great in a dark room as it is not full of bright lights. Pressing Display button while watching brings up what. IE Divx or Xvid or MPeg audio, time already played as well as time left to play. In my testing it hung up on loading when I tried to play a specific AVI off of a backup disc, power off on and back in business. More testing needed to see why. OTOH I stuck in about 8 DVDs full of AVIs last evening and they all played fine excluding one video file. Played a PAL region free backup DVD. FF/FRev good on DVD and AVI, quirky on mpg files. Slo-Mo and step by step/pause are good quality and easy to figure out. I Never cracked the manual as functionality was to figure out from remote markings.

Good Picture, much better Zoom function than my old Apex 3 Disc changer. Easy to use remote.

I'm thinking of getting a second one while Best Buy has them in stock to replace a old Apex single disc player in another room and pass on the Apex to someone whose Player just died.

I rated it a 9 but it is more like a 9.5

Pros: Very nice player better than my Philips dvp642. Great picture. Screen saver a plus. 28 character file read. So far it has played every disc I have tried. Great picture. Plays divx, and xvid. Plays dvdr+ and dvdrw+ although the manual does not state it. Could be region free. Search videohelp.com sd-3990. Performed very well with the divx test cd 2.0. Automatically sets picture format. I own two dvp642. The Toshiba is priced better and runs cool to the touch.
Cons: Very flimsy cd/dvd tray. Manual fails to mention you must have the dvd player hooked up via standard video mode for initial setup. RGB Composite mode hookup out of the box only shows a blank screen.

Chipset: Zoran Vaddis 882
Comments:
pros:

-divx/xivd w/ qpel and gmac support

-Can play divx/xvid at high bitrates, tested at over 2.5Mbps, manual shows example of at least 7.2Mbps
-Plays divx/xvid at 720x480 max resolution

-Good dvd playback for price

-can play divx files with .divx file extension

-multiple audio and subtitles work with divx files

-Nice menu for divx/xvid/mpeg files

-plays region free pal disc

-No annoying bright blue led on player like some other players.

Cons:

-Chip (Zoran Vaddis 882)is divx ultra certified but the player is only divx home theater certified. The chip has the abiltiy to play divx media files (i.e. .divx files with menus and dvd like interface) Unfortunatley firmware does not include this ability. Divx media files with .dvix file extension will play but not with the ultra certified features.

-Can play svcds but does not have playback control (rw,ff, pause) Chapter points work though.

-Can play pal but must be region free as a region hack is not availabe at the present time.

-Screen on the player itself doesn't display title/time

-No optical audio

All cons aside, this is a quality player with many features for its price point.

I highly recommend this player to anyone looking for a divx/xvid, etc player. It performed very well with the divx test cd 2.0. It was able to play all of the videos w/o any problem except for HD. I have tested everything from divx 3.11, 4, 5, 6, xvid without any problem with the video. On a few videos (that were encoded with the same method) the mp3 audio didn't play. There must have been something strange with how they were packed. I ran them through Virtual Dub to reencode the audio to mp3 and they play fine now. One minute of audio reencoding per every 12 minutes of video length was a small price to pay to get the files playing correctly on the player -- and as I mentioned before it was the same show encoded in the same (messed up) method that caused this while every other movie I tried played flawlessly.

Just got it 2 days ago. I bought it mainly for Divx/Xvid
support and a price tag < 60. Since it is new player took a chance, till now it has played all my xvid/divx. I will report back on how it goes after few more days. Compared to my LiteON LVD-2001, it is lightning quick in loading and can read all .srt subtitles. I have not tried others yet.

I've been using this player for two weeks and I'm really pleased with it. I've tried several players in the past, and this one is by far the best I've seen. It plays far more of my collection of xvid and divx videos. In fact, it has played nearly every every one I've tried. It seems to have no problem at all with QPEL and GMC, and I love the automatic aspect ratio. It handles wide-screen perfectly, and allows 4x3 videos to fill slightly more of the screen than normal with absolutely no distortion. Overall, the picture quality is better than I expected - I bought this to use as a divx player, but now I use it for regular DVD's as well.

The player does have a couple of limitations: it doesn't recognize any video file that isn't an AVI or MPEG (no Nero Digital files!), it doesn't recognize AVC-based encodings, and won't play any video with a resolution higher than 720 wide (it displays an error message stating that HD displays are not supported.) The menu system displays only 16 chars of the file name, but I've tried other players that displayed only eight, so this one is actually an improvement. I'd really prefer to see longer filenames, though.

As one reviewer mentioned, the player sometimes fails to recognize a file that it had previously played, and it's necessary to either eject the disc or power the player off and back on. This has happened only twice for me, and is not a serious problem.

Overall, I'm really impressed with the player. If I hadn't tried various test discs with a variety of formats and resolutions, I might have never even become aware of its limitations (which are probably shared with the majority of the other players out there.) I have yet to see any pixelation, skipping, or other artifact while a video is playing. It has had no trouble reading any of the discs (mostly DVD+R's and +RW's) that I've tried so far.

I decided to write a review because I'm bringing the player back to the shop (after two days).

PROS:
- As a DVD player, it provides absolutely brilliant viewing in progressive scan mode.
- Automatic-aspect-ratio feature. This feature causes the player to play anamorphic titles in FULL mode, 4:3 ratio titles in NARROW mode, and 4:3 letterbox title in ZOOM mode. It also applies that feature to DIVX and DVD titles.
- Nice menu system for file-based content (though I have not tried this with MP3's).
- Divx and xvid seem to work and look great!

CON:
- Picky about mp4 formats than my former player, the Philips DVP642. I have a collection of Mystery Science Theater CD's recorded in a weird generic MP4 format, and it wouldn't even try.
- Buggy behavior navigating divx/xvid titles. Sometimes a title would play without sound. Sometimes a perfectly good title would refuse to play (after already playing). I had to shut off the player and restart it to get it to work sometimes.
- Sensitive to media issues, freezing or choking on many dvd-r's. Whether divx or dvd.

Bottom Line - a terrific progressive dvd player, a not-so-great "scene" player. Though maybe a firmware upgrade or two will fix that.
