There are features that puzzle me that the owner's manual doesn't cover. When I try to view JPEGs, you can get thumbnail sketches of all of them on the disk, but only a very few can be shown in full screen. I supposed that they might have had too great a resolution, but there doesn't seem to be much difference in the resolutions of those which can be shown full screen and those which cannot.

Does not play SVCD. Does not play CD-RW media at all.

Has problems with discs which have mixed MP3s and JPEGs; you can only hear the MP3s /or/ look at the JPEGs, and you have to eject the disc and change an option in the setup menu to switch modes. I don't use WMA, so I haven't tried, but I assume it has the same problem.

Tiny, hard-to-use remote. Opening & closing the tray is brutally slow.

In short: avoid unless you're a Toshiba fanboy. This player lists for $60 - $90 on Froogle; you can get much better players for less.

Burned couple cds with my jpegs, some files show other majority) don't. I have yet to find how "low res" you have to go in order to see your jpegs.
Here is a "very helpful" info on Toshiba's web site:
-----------
*CD-R/CD-RW discs recorded by CD-DA method can be played back. Some CD-R/CD-RW discs may be incompatible due to laser pick-up and disc design. DVD-R discs recorded by DVD Video method can be played. Some DVD-R discs may be incompatible due to laser pick-up and disc design. MP3 and JPEG discs may be incompatible due to different recording format or condition of disc.
-----------------
It realy tells you that if your CD, DVD does not work it is your "tough luck".

I would return it but I threw away the original box.
Toshiba did not meet my expectations. Should have bought Cyberhome CH-DVD 300.

Comments:
Rating a DVD player on its MP3 capability is just not sufficient.

After owning this player (my first) for several weeks, I've just now realized that it does not allow the user to pause or fast-forward MP3s. Why any manufacturer would omit this basic feature is beyond me.

I'd like to see dvdrhelp include this feature in its DVD player reports. Which players support MP3 fast-forward? I'd like to know, because I'm likely to be shopping for one.

Otherwise, the Toshiba MP3 menu listing is OK, displaying up to 20 character names. It also picks up CD-Text info from audio discs.

DVD playback is good, although brief pauses will occur several times during a movie. In widescreen format, the player defaults to a 1X Zoom display instead of the full widescreen. You'll have to cycle through the Zoom controls to get full widescreen.

JPG display and manipulation is excellent, but the player will not show the high-resolution JPGs that are standard on picture CDs made at Sam's Club. Lower-resolution Kodak Picture CDs display just fine.

VCDs are hit or miss. Sometimes the player will let you return to the menu, sometimes it won't, depending on the disc. Sometimes the audio is in sync with the image, sometimes it's not. That may or not be a function of my Mero 6.0 VCD encoding software.

Overall, I like the player. But I'm so bugged about the lack of MP3 fast-forward that I may ask Sears if they'll take it back.

I returned one Toshiba SD3950 to Best Buy because it did not play VCD's. The second unit did not play them either.

Toshiba claims the unit plays VCD's. Every VCD I tried played improperly: the sound and video were not in sync or the sound would skip frames.

These VCD's were made using VCD Easy and some were made without VCD Easy. The results were the same; audio/video sync problems.

Claiming this unit played VCD's would be the same as claiming a 33 1/3 RPM turntable played 45's. Yes, it would, however, not so that you could listen to it.

I also didn't like the way the SD3950 played DVD's either. It only FF/REW at 4x and did so poorly. Skipping chapters was also cumbersome to watch.

Overall I was disapointed with this considering the other Toshiba products I own (VCR's) are excellent.

BestBuy exchanged the Toshiba SD3950 for the Polaroid DVC-2000, a VCR/VDV combo. The DVD part is excellent, absolutely no complaints. It works great. The VCR part seems to have trouble with tapes made on other VCR's. Just not as clear as should be. Possibly a tracking problem. Pre-recorded tapes seem fine.

Overall a good unit.

Avoid the Toshiba SD3950 if you want to play VCD's.

My unit did not play DVDs -- shipping it back.

Tested some jpg and mp3 CDRs. It would only play the 650 MB size CDRs. The 700 MB resulted in a check disk error. (This could have been my unit which would give a similar error when trying to read a DVD).

Using the Navi button (pressed twice), you can see the folders and mp3 filenames. The menu system and remote seemed pretty sane.

Decided to try the Apex 2600 rather then this unit as it seems more flexible with regards to what it will play.

I have a HD front projector with an 8’screen. It is easy to separate DVD players that play good or not on this big screen and I must say I do see every little fault that you would not see on a small television. My daughter always says to me “Dad, you’re not watching the movies you’re watching the pixels”.
At any rate I’ve tried the JVC XV-N44SL and I must say it’s terrible for NO player should stutter on panning and this applies to the XV-N55 as reported by Zdnet review. Same problem indicating this is a common problem to most JVC players. Simply unacceptable in this day and age.
I’ve also returned the Sony 725P for my projector would do better de-interlacing than this player and Sony also added the DVD+R support but the DVD-R now skips on a lot of disks that the old 715P simply played flawlessly. So I went for a more expensive player and bought the Yamaha 5650. The initial impression was very good however the progressive scan in darker movies was the one that killed the feeling of an excellent player. No matter how I’ve tried to adjust the darker seens, due to the fact there is no black level expansion the picture was just too soft and washed out. The remote is very small and cramped; I kept hitting the wrong buttons all the time. For a more expensive player this clearly is not good. So I’ve bought my last player the Toshiba SD-3950 and wow, for less than halve the price of Yamaha, I now have 3:2 pull down, black level expansion and perfect dark seens to boot. The few DVD-R I’ve tried played perfectly. Now some people might say it has the chrome bug (maybe yes and maybe no I just didn’t test it yet), it’s only a flag reader or something like that, but I say my eyes don’t lie,
I like what I see and this is the best so far. I give it a 10 for the remote is excellent, picture quality awesome and very low price.

My SD-3950 played both DVD-R and DVD+R discs. DVD-Rs were Memorex, DVD+Rs were Fujifilm. Though ability to read DVD+Rs is not reported anywhere (manual, manufacturer specification) for this player. Probably it’s media-sensitive, but my DVD+R discs played just perfectly. Did not read SVCDs (as expected according to specs). Played VCDs.

Just bought this player today, however mine has "SU" at the end of the model #. So it maybe a different model, however I can find no info online for this other one.

I think it works very well, it has played ALL VCDs I've put in that have been made with VCD Easy. I tried some others that were made by an unknown VCD coder and they wouldn't read.
It also doesn't seen to allow file browsing to play MPEG/MPG's.
No DivX either (boo-hoo! I got to make everything VCD now!)

Still I'm thrilled to find it so cheap, and Toshiba is a great brand with FEW mechanical problems!

type sensitive and menu structure finickey,
returned it for a JVC XL 44, and am very
happy with the JVC, although the toshia
did play some DVD's burned with nero that
the Jvc will not, the Jvc seems to accept
just about any brand of DVD-R media without
complaint, where as the toshiba rejected
about 40% of the Dvd-R media that I tried in it

Picked it up a Best Buy to replace a player that finally died. Have been very happy with it. It has a number of features not available on similarly priced units, that's why I bought it. Seems to be solidly constructed as well.

Only real complaint is that the remote is awkward to use.
