This DVD player is a don in the DVD player market.

The only problem is no SVCD unless you use the header trick. To me, a minor annoyance.

Other than that, the MP3s just get their names hacked a bit. But who cares. For the price, this player would be perfect if it had regular SVCD, not SVCD with header trick. Do try it if you'd like to watch SVCD on CD-R you cheaper folk. =)

So 9/10

I bought this from Target for $100 about a month ago. I was looking for something that would play DVD-R's and DVD's with MP3's. It does both very well!

Keep in mind that you can only have around 640 files (MP3 or Jpeg) in a directory. If you have more than that it will not recognize the last files alphabetically. The way around this is to have several different folders, but then random play will not skip from folder to folder, only within the same folder. So, it takes some work to organize how you want your file structure layed out. But I was able to get over 1200 songs on one disc! Or around 80 hours! Amazing! And the sound is superb!

I have an APEX 600A that would skip and stutter on MP3's from time to time and the sound never seemed to be real good. The Toshiba sounds great through my Pioneer Pioneer VSX-509S receiver.

The DVD-R's that I tested looked great and played well even at 7000 bit rate. Didn't stutter once.

Jpeg viewer worked well also. It has the same file issues that the MP3's have as well. I haven't played with the viewer interphase enough yet, but there appears to be a way to do a programed slide show. Not real clear on this yet.

I burned the DVD with the MP3's and Jpeg's using Easy CD Creator 5 onto some cheap DVD-R's that I got via the internet. Seemed to like them fine.

I also found out that I don't have a Macrovision problem. I've been able to have a video signal pass through my receiver to the VCR with no problems. Don't know if I'm lucky or what, but so far so good.

Overall I've been real pleased with the player so far. The picture looks great. The only drawback for me has been the file limit in the MP3 and JPEG folders. Otherwise, I'd give this machine a 10.

Purchased at Target. Great playing my DVD+R just fine, plays PAL discs well on my NTSC TV. I also have the signal routed through the Reciever and VCR with no problems. Great Progressive Scan Player.

VCD works great although SVCD doesn't appear to work on this player.

Just tried the mini-dvd test. Authored a menu with one motion button and one video with Ulead DVD Workshop. Burnt it to CDRW and everything worked just fine. I was amazed! Heard that most players won't do this.

Comments:
I picked up the 3900 player at Target for $100, and was looking for a solid region-free machine to replace an older unit I had. I figured with the Toshiba brand name this would out-perform my old Panasonic A-110 if nothing else, but I have to admit I was slightly disappointed in the unit.

First off, the picture quality -- using the S-Video connection -- is actually inferior to the A-110. I tested a handful of DVDs that displayed crisper images on the A-110 than the 3900, where lines around objects would shimmer more frequently and look less steady. Colors were good, but the detail in the image on my 50' projection TV was overall slightly inferior to the A-110 -- a unit that's now some five years old. (Note I don't have Progressive Scan so perhaps the 3900 performs much better on a digital 16:9 television. It definitely do the job for me on my current set-up).

Secondly, as far as "Region free" goes -- be careful with this unit. Yes, the "hack" is easy to perform, but unfortunately it didn't work on several R2 PAL DVDs I had imported from the UK...a theme echoed in several comments below. Some of the other import DVDs I had played OK, but the PAL-NTSC conversion was certainly no better on the 3900 than on other Region Free players I have (i.e. Cyberhome 500 and the Norcent). Bottom line is that if you want Region Free capability, the 3900 isn't going to be playing every disc you might purchase :(

So, I ultimately opted to return the machine and get my money back. It's certainly not a bad unit, but if you're looking to play Imported DVDs, I'd go for a Cyberhome or the Norcent -- they're half the price and the image quality will be just as good in terms of the PAL-NTSC conversion. Not only that, they won't give you any frustration when trying to play other Region codes.

The 3900 is also manufactured in China so I'm not sure hardware-wise that this is as much of a bargain as you might expect from a brand manufacturer. Like I said, I'd go for another, lower-cost brand first, and if you don't have a progressive scan TV (where I assume the 3900 performs best), then I'd bypass this unit entirely.

First, the DVD playback is amazing. This player is better than any player I've owned or tested. (Even better than my Toshiba 1600 and 2800!) The audio has had a HUGE improvement with Dialog enhancement which is excelent with my very old audio system.

As for VCDs and XVCD's, this unit is beyond amazing! Again, my existing VCD's look even better than they did on my old players. The real story is the support for varions resolutions. I've tested this player with VCDs at 352x240, 352x480, 528x480 and 704x480. All played perfectly! Also, the ZOOM worked on all resolutions! (Finally, zoom support on VCDs.)

BTW, I've tested quite a number of players and I haven't seen one that makes VCDs look as good as this one.

You have to used the header trick to get SVCDs to play. They look great! My old phillips magnavox 825 would not sync the voice up correctly with the picture, this thing does it perfectly.

Comments:
I have confirmed with Toshiba support, that while this player can NAVIGATE folders, for both mp3 and jpgs, you can only play in one folder at a time. ie. play/random will only work in that folder... and not in subfolders of that folder... so you cannot show a slideshow, or do a random play or a full disc if it organized into folder. So close to perfect.. yet so far..

Have seen no evidence of it picking up ID3 tags.

Also not able to do non-authored VCDs. The file browser only recognizes files of type .jpg and .mp3/.wma. When you stick in an un-authored disc with mpgs, it insists you try to play mp3s or jpgs, and finding none, you are stuck with no recognizable (to it) files.

In response to Jeff's request... I've been able to successfully play SVCD's using the VCD Header trick. I'm not sure if it will work without using this trick because I haven't tried it (at 812Mbytes the file I'm using becomes too large for an 80minute CDR with the regular header).

XVCD's that ran on my old Toshiba 1810 work and look superb on it as well (1500Kbs).

No problem's with any media, although I avoid the really low end stuff as I've discovered they tend to start displaying 'artifacts' as they get older.

For the extra 15 cents, if I want it to last, I burn on blacks.

BTW: Purchased on Apr 24th @ FutureShop for $184CDN

This is the player I've been waiting for. After owning the following:
Pioneer DV333
Panasonic RV32K
Sony DVRNS715P
Apex AD1500
Toshiba SD2700
JVC 501BK
and researching many more players the Toshiba SD3900 beats them all. Why?

-Plays DVD-R/RW smoothly with NO skips, jagged edges or flaws.
-The picture quality in standard S-VHS and Progressive Scan modes are superior to all the other brands.
-MP3 and WMA playback is flawless
-This is the best jpeg picture viewer DVD Player on the market.

I could go on and on, but all in all this is a terrific value for it's incredible performance. I didn't think anything would beat my Sony or Pioneer models, but I was wrong. Buy this player!
