| This is an excellent player for my needs. It flawlessly plays original movies with a great resulting picture and sound. I use DVD X Copy Platinum to create personal movie copies and do not percieve any quality loss or problems on playback with this machine. I have copied about 40 movies on both TDK and Fuji DVD+R media. The playback of these copies is as good as the original. |

This dvd player is great with original movies. Great image quality on original movies and DVD-R movies. The only problem i find is the fact that is not consistent when it comes to playing burned DVDs. I use Pine, Verbatim, Maxell and Memorex 2x and 4x -R. This player will play 6 movies out of 10 with no problems, but sometimes the movie skips and freezes from start to finish.
The same movie on my Daytek it plays fine. I believe this DVD is a must for original movies, since the quality is phenomenal, but if you have a large collection of burned DVD's you will be fustrated and disapointed with this product. |

| I backup dvds for my neighbor who owns this unit. The DVDs that work the best so far are Sony+R/+RW, Fuji+R/+RW,TDK +R, and Memorex +RW. I rip to hard drive first using DVD Decrypter(file mode), next I use DVD shrink, and then I use Nero Express to burn at 1X. This method ensures great video quality playback and no I/O errors due to dirty/scratched dvd movie disc. Yes its time consuming, but I HATE redos. My operating system is XP PRO(turned off imapi service) and the burners are Sony DRX-500ULX and DRU-500AX. I am also able to burn successfully 2 movies at once using Nero Express. |

| I have been very disappointed with this DVD player. With regular DVDs it will often skip when changing layers and with copied DVDs it always skips and hesitates. I have tried the same disks on my parents Panasonic and they play fine with no hesitation. This happens on both direct copies of 1 layer disks and worse on compressed 2 layer disks. I switched to burning at 1x with some improvement but it is still very distracting. |

Like another user I used DVDXCOPY 1.4 to rip a DVD to a DVD-R backup (2x generic media) of one of my movies, which was then split into two discs. I used DVDXCOPY to rip and then Nero 5.5 to burn. I followed the instructions at: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=127624
for maximum DVD -R compatibility.
The player just locks up when trying to play the backup. I used a Sony Vaio which has an internal pioneer 104 dvd-rw drive. All in all I love this DVD player. The 1.25x zoom is very useful and the progressive scan quality is one of the best I have seen. Buy this player if you just want great quality picture but don't care too much about being able to play non-standard stuff on it. |

Have tried this unit with DVD-R recorded with DVD-XCopy and DVD-Xcopy Xpress without any problems (TDK 2x media)
Also plays DVD-R/W recorded using Nero 5.5.10.7b without a problem.
Picture quality is great. Is missing the ability to show time remaining on a disc. |

Great picture quality, good progressive scan. Unit is a little sluggish in identifying media type and very slow as a picture viewer, but it does everything I want it to do.
Will recognize jpegs on cd-r's and go into picture viewing mode - a nice plus for creating your own slide shows. |

| I bought this DVD player not knowing that it did not play SVCDs, one of the formats I use most. I was disappointed, but I did not take the DVD player back because of it's excellent DVD and VCD playback. SVCDs play fine using the VCD header trick through TMPGEnc. Unfortunately, I just bought a Sony DVD system that has a 5-Disc DVD changer built in, so I will either use this player on another TV, besides my 65" or sell it. This player is excellent for playing VCDs and DVDs, but keep in mind that it doesn't play SVCDs without the VCD header trick. I paid $150 for the player but I'm sure it's come down in price since then. |

I use DVD X Copy 1.5 with an HP DVD 200e burner that only copies to DVD+R/+RW.
My movies ,that took up 2 disks, play very well on a Toshiba SD3800 without any problems.
Since my burner can't copy to DVD-R/-RW, I can't comment on their use. |

| FINALLY! A Toshiba player with its BRILLIANT picture quality and sound that plays ALL CD/DVD formats I tested. After extensive testing, the conclusion is that it read all the media I threw at it. CD-R/CD-RW; DVD-R/-RW; DVD+R/+RW and that's without any compatibility changes! I use SONY DRU-500A DVD burner. The manual said it will only read 650mb/74 min CD-R/RW, but it read all of my 700mb/80min CD-Rs and CD-RW's. Also, it has awesome navigation menu system, and progressive scan with tons of other feautures all for easily obtainable price of $150 (I paid $125 and it's worth every penny). Try it and you won't get disappointed. |

This last Christmas, I received this SD-3800. My excitement about its DVD-R reading capabilities was immediately put down. I have used DVDXCOPY to burn 2 movies, 1 which had to be split, the other which fit on one DVD-R. However, neither of these worked on this DVD player, and I know it isn't simply this individual DVD player, as I tried it on another of the same model. However, these DVD-R's to work on another stand-alone DVD player, which doesn't claim to play DVD-R's and they play on my computer. Now, to me it seems that this Toshiba DVD Player should play it more easily. On one of the DVD-R's, it simply stalls, and the screen on the DVD player says "DVD" in red, while the other says "disc error". I used Memorex V2.0 DVD-R's on a pioneer 104 dvd-rw drive. If anyone else has used DVDXCopy with success, please let me know, or knows of more compatible media, thanks much.:)

I was truly amazed at how good this player is - the picture quality is superb as it has progressive scan and even with PS off, it still delivers a great picture. (It has a switch on the back)
Using Easy CD Creator, I've been able to do the following: create and view VCDs (not a single coaster!), create and play MP3 CDs (I didn't even bother to shorten the song names to 8 characters - the player played every song regardless), and view JPGs (made a simple data CD without folders and copied over 600 JPGs to it) - the player recognized it immediately as a Picture CD and went to the view mode - it also has a built-in slide show mode you can select and lets you choose the number of seconds you want to view each pic - you can also pan and zoom. Very nice touch. I used cheap, no-name CD-Rs from CompUSA, Prime Peripherals, Phillips, Fuji, and Precision and did not encounter a single problem.
As for DVDs, using a Sony Dru-500A and Dazzle DVD Complete (very easy to use), I burned the same movie with menus/chapters in the 4 DVD formats: -R,-RW, +R, +RW and they all played without a problem. I used Ritek-R (excellent and cheap!), Memorex-RW, Memorex+R, Sony+RW. No coasters.
I believe this is the same model as the SD-K710 which is sold in Costco. Excellent player - highly recommend it.

| Good progressive scan picture, and the .JPG viewer works, but is too slow. The real reason I bought the player (in addition to progressive scan) was to play MP3s. These seem to work, but decoding them causes little "blurps" or high pitched sounds during playback. I tested 15 different .MP3 disks constructed in all different formats and file types, all to no avail. ISO or Julient, CBR, VBR...they all failed to play without the "blurps". Perhaps the player is bad, but I'm returning it for a Sony DVPNS-715P tomorrow. |

A quick report about JPEG viewing, the major factor in my buying this unit. Disappointed in the way a JPEG-only disc plays - pictures load very, very slowly. Could not get it to zoom or shift in this mode. As reported, would not work with disc that had folders. Tried a VCD burned with Nero and it worked better. Overall disappointed. I tried an Apex AD-1200 and it shows plain JPEG discs beautifully, even offering a dozen or more transitions. The Apex had fixed zoom distances, though, and other problems, and Apexes' reported poor reliability drove me to more well-known brands.
Still looking.... |

This is one of the best bang-for-the-buck progressive scan players on the market today. For DVD and VCD playback, it's as good as any of the players I've tested/owned.
I just recently got a dvd burner, but have only tried DVD-RW's. I've been a fan of Memorex brand discs and have no problems with any of their media.
Discs have been authored/burned using the following software: Sonic MyDVD, Sonic ReelDVD, Nero 5.5, RecordNow Max.
My only complaint: FF and RW speeds are a bit sluggish.
I don't use the MP3 feature since I've got a networked streaming player hooked to my stereo. ;)

Stunning DVD Picture.
MP3 file name cropped to 8 character as <elvis-pr>.
Random over xFolders does work.
Standard JPG CD must not have folders.
Kodak Cd preferred. Must use Nero.
Cool features and remote control is good.
Brought back the unit. Why?
No SVCD.
No MP3 long file name or ID tag support.
JPEG viewer sluggish and hyper slow.
JPEG viewer requires Kodak CD to work properly.
Some multi-session CD cause problems.
MP3 must be = or smaller than 128KBPS.
If it wasn't for the premium DVD picture, I would have rated this a 4... |

I wanted to write this post to let those know about this players apparent incompatiblity with DVD's split using IFOEdit. I have now split over a dozen DVD's and split them with IFOEdit and then burned with Nero 5.5.9.x, Stomp Record Now, imgtools(in DVD Decrypter), and Prassi, and this player has not been able to play any of them. I have used all types of media from, Princo, TDK, Ritek, and Memorex. I know this is an issue with the player itself cause I also have a Sony DVP-NS315 and Toshiba SD-2800 which all of the above mentioned DVD's play flawlessly in.
The picture quality is great on this player and I have not tested too much into it's ability to play VCD/XVCD and tricked SVCD/XSVCD, however the the couple standard VCD's I did try would get blocky when any significant motion occured and generally were nothing spectacular.
Just wanted to give the heads up for those thinking of buying this player and who do 1:1 copies using IFOEdit, their are some issues. |

Manual states that CDRW are not recommened but I have had no problems Memorex CDRWs at least for MP3s. Manaul also states that MP3s must be 8.3 filename format, but this is also incorrect it merely truncates the file and folder names. No idea what the max bit rate or max number of MP3s per disc is, but I used a combination of 129 MP3s of both VBR and CBR in multiple folders and subfolders, without any problems.
Player has user friendly icon based menus. Has ability to control everything (as far as I can tell) from both the remote and player itself (uses a OSD virtual remote and a pointing device on the player similiar to a laptop pointing device)
Not tried any VCD/SVCD, but I understand there is a possibility for XVCD to be supported. It is also supposed to support mulitiple types of JPG images, but again I have not verified this.
Overall excellent DVD player. I don't plan on using SVCD or MP3 playback much, so this player is perfect for me. |

| Over all this player has very nice progresive scan. One thing I dont understand is if you play a wide screen dvd and have a Toshiba HDTV widescreen on the natural picture setting you still have the bars on the side is this normal and yes it is set to 16X9 in the setup. If some one could let me know you can email at sparkyr234@hotmail.com. Thanks |

The only qualm would be SVCD not being able to be played but that is a small quark to live with. |

I bought this DVD player with my Toshiba HD TV and I must say it is an excellent player for the Formats it does play. I ended up returning it and trading it for the Pioneer DV-656A only because the Pioneer plays SVCDs and DVD-Audio. The progressive scan picture of the Toshiba, I felt, was clearly BETTER than the Pioneers, however the playback formats/features of the Pioneer outweighed it.
Also, the Zoom feature of the Toshiba is one of the best. I liked it because you could make a 2.35:1 movie zoom perfectly to fit the 16:9 TV (something like a 1.25X zoom?), whereas most other DVDs have a 2X zoom that zooms in too far. Out of all the DVD players I've seen, Toshiba is the only one to offer this 1.25X zoom step. Its great for playing 2.35:1 DVDs on standard TVs (zooming in makes them closer to a 1.85:1 ratio). Just too bad it doesn't play SVCD =( |
