CVD? $450 over 1 year 10 of 10 Comments: Bought this several years ago when it first came out, (HIGH PRICE lol) but pic quality and features still rival many out today. Large collection of DVD -r's that will NOT run currently on unit. Most media is DVD -R from RiData. 8X with media code of ProdiscS04. Unsure which way to go, Firmware will most likely work and i will not have to spend any time or $ re-burning. In future, i would like to remain using -R media All burns using DVDXcopy, (Till i woke up LOL)now DVD Shrink, DVDdecrypter, ANyDVD and Nero express. AVOID RIDATA 8X -R with the whiteprintable injet surface! Horrific quality using a LG-GSA 4160B

CVD? $? over 1 year 8 of 10 Comments: Have successfuly burnt home movies via various encoding ssoftwares onto DVD-R and they have worked very well. It seems though if you turn off the DVD partly thru the movie the player after that does not know where to start from, nor does it go to the begining. I used Verbatim, Sony and Ridata DVD media.

CVD? $? over 1 year 7 of 10 Comments: I have never had a problem w/ this player in the 6yrs that I have owned it, although I do not use it all that often as it is my spare for the bedroom. My only gripe was that it did not play CDR's or DVDR's. Until now. I find that it plays DVD+R book typed to DVD-ROM flawlessly. Make sure your burner supports bitsetting (or if there is a firmware for it that does).

The picture is comparable to pc based dvd players using ATI Radeon cards. In other words it is great! I am projecting to 9 feet wide screen with a projector. When I first tried DVD+R, I had limited success. The Verbatim dics worked but not the memorex. Now, I know the reason. The book-type must be set to DVD-Video( or is it DVD_ROM?). Since, I started setting the book-type on media, I could play all DVD+R and DVD+RW. I have used verbatim, memorex and RIDATA. All play flawlessly. I just bought a new DVD Player SONY 501. The picture and sound quality of old Toshiba 3109 is much better than new sony!

N/A 9 of 10 DVD-MP3 Comments: I have just upgraded the firmware and it cost me $60 total. I have been able to use Memorex DVD-R and had a complete failure with TDK SVCD. It's a great player and I'd give it a 10 if I didn't have to spend $60 and the time, just giving an update to my earlier comments.

Up until now I have not been able to play anything but with my LiteOn 411s and the bitsetting tool I can now play burned DVDs. I did not have my firmware upgraded.

The price for the upgrade in New York as of December 29, which is today, I just came back from there, is $49.99 plus tax and they ship it off somewhere. N/A 8 of 10 Comments: Pretty good for what it can do. The problem is it barely plays anything thats home-made. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see that it plays backup DVD copies on Memorex DVD+R (4x). I havent tried CD-RW, but I can't get any CD-Rs to play on it.

CVD? $250 N/A 8 of 10 DVD-RAM Comments: Have had mine since 1999 and it has been a great player. Wouldn't play DVD-R or +R. Took everyones advice and dropped by my local Toshiba Authorized rep and for $35 he updated the firmware to 3.0 (was running 1.5) and VOILA, now reads DVD-R great. No DVD+R though. At least with TDK media. I'm happy with DVD-R. Now I'll get a few more years use out of this great player.

N/A No rating Comments: Just got my firmware upgraded to 3.0f. Still won't play DVD+R or DVD+RW. Service guy warned me that this would likely be the case -- said he believed there were just some settings that couldn't be changed OR there was an optical issue, but either way these "older players" are just stuck playing older DVDs. At least now with the upgrade I can play Disney DVDs. Sigh.

N/A 10 of 10 Comments: Will confirm this as well.. I have an older 3109 with updated firmware Version 3.0. It now plays DVD-R's I made using DVD X Copy and DVDClone. Haven't tried any other formats except CD-R which will not play. This is a very sweet player..

N/A No rating Comments: Have tried all formats but it only works with DVD-R. Others have reported that it works with DVD+R/RW with bitsetting (essentially fooling the player into thinking the disk is DVD-R). Possibly will play DVD-VCD? I got it to play but only 1/2 the picture shows up. Hopefully I can get it to work so I can forget about trying to make it play CD-RW (still no success :(

N/A 7 of 10 Comments: Works very well playing purchased DVD movies. Will play CDRW audio discs. Played Philips DVD+RW only after using bitsetter. Unfortunately my Sony DUR-510A doesn't work with the bitsetter. I reset the bit on someones else's DVR writer to see if it would work.

N/A 6 of 10 Comments: After years of trying different media every so often, with little hope, I can confirm my player finally accepts one CD-RW media I have found: Imation 4x 650/74. According to disc information found in Nero CD Speed tool, this is manufactured by Mitsubishi, the dye type is 2. I can also confirm standard VCD 2.0 playback, and have played with MPEG-1 xVCD variations as well. Both 1/2 D1 (CVD) and D1 (DVD) resolutions failed. Keeping the resolution at 352x240, I can confirm 3224 total bps (3000 video, 224 audio) worked fine, though I only tested 23.976fps. I can also confirm audio will play at 48khz sample rate without requiring downsampling to 44.1. Muxing with both bbMPEG (high mux buffer required) and TMPGEnc MPEG Tools (using non-standard VCD as described earlier) keep sync. Lastly, I did try the "VCD Header Trick" with MPEG-2 SVCD, and I can confirm this is one player that trick will not function with.

N/A 10 of 10 Comments: Love my 3109 so I am very happy that my entire DVD collection of 300 movies was copied by DVD X Copy on Verbatim DVD+R media and every on worked. Had to set the mode to two but when I did was awesome. Used a HP 300i burner.

N/A No rating Comments: I upgraded my player to firmware 3.0 and am happy to report that numerous DVD-R of mine now work. Pretty much all my media is Ritek G03 silver top/purple bottom 1x media, and this is the only media I've tried so far. The player seems to be pretty picky as some dvds seem to fumble after the fbi warning, some won't work at all, and others work flawlessly. I burnt lots of dvds before, so I don't really recall what I did differently.

I told them that it's not possible, because in this forum, people could do it. Is there a way I can contact Toshiba to report this and complain about it? Thanks.

N/A 6 of 10 Comments: I tried burning a DVD+R from Sonic myDVD 4.0 but it did not work. Loading the disk, DVD lights up right away and then it displays "disk error". The media was "That's DVD+R for Data". The Burner was an Optorite DD0203 +/- R/W. Software version is 1.8. Note you can check the version by hitting [Zoom] 6, 0, 6 [Zoom]. Other than playing DVD+R this has been a great player and have had it for over 4 years.
