I got this player sometime back and I thought I could do others good by reviewing it. Its a straightforward player which plays most commercial DVD's. It plays VCD's too. I recently bought a DVD burner and burned some DVD-R's and it had some skipping and freezing. I heard that I should burn DVD's at 2x. I did it and it worked well. The good thing for me is that this player plays my DVD+R DL discs (I played only the first 10 mins of the disc and so, cant really say if it had problems!). I think burning ur disc at 2x (for any type of disc is the trick!). The downside in this player is it gives a noise when the player is powered on. And when a movie is played, the noise is reduced well but still is audible if we sit close to the TV. Other than that, a good buy! When I bought this, I got it for $100. Now, this should be even cheaper!

I tried burning many discs that did not work with this player but would work on other DVD players of mine. However, when I tried burning both DVD+R and DVD-R discs at a 2x speed instead of at 8x they worked! It may also work on a 4x speed but I have not tried that out yet.

This DVD player has been pretty good over the past 2 years. Only bad thing about it is that I haven't been able to play any DVD+Rs with it and sometimes, for many of my burned DVD-R movies, after about 30min of play, the picture begins to get garbled and messy and then it nearly stops playing, until I turn the thing off and restart the movie from the last position played, then it goes fine again for another 30min. All regular movies are great though. :-)

I have been able to play burned CDs on this DVD player but not burned DVDs. I have a Toshiba SD 2800 DVD player, and a NEC 1100A DVD burner in my computer. The software that I'm using to burn DVDs is DVD X Copy Xpress. To the best of my knowledge, there is no way to change settings on this software, and I have been unable to find any way to change the bit settings on my DVD burner. When I put the burned DVD into the player, I get the intro screen about the DVD being an archival copy, but then the screen locks and will do nothing. I cannot not even turn off the DVD player without just cutting off the power.

Rental DVDs from the video store work fine.

Saw previous postings stating that the menu feature doesn't work for VCD's on this player. Worked fine for me using ULead Video Studio 7. HOWEVER, I have (up until now) been unsuccessful in creating DVD's that will play when using either the ULead or Nero 6.0. Just got messages stating "disc error". I then followed the advice of several postings on this site that recommended changing the "book type" to DVD-Rom. That did (finally) load my project on my Toshiba SD2800 and attempt to play, however, locked up repeatedly and was unsuccessful in getting past the first 20 seconds of my production. Would love to hear any advice as to what other changes I can tweak to have it actually play as I would like to do this professionally and give me the ability to produce high quality DVD's for customers, as opposed to VCD's... Anyone???

First, it plays VCD's great!

Second, it plays XVCD's but ONLY at 352x240 resolution. I've tried larger (720x480) but it does not work.

It can handle variable bit rates and constant bit rates, but for some reason I don't see a marked difference between the standard VCD (1150 kb/s) and a setting of 5000 kb/s. Actually the 5000 kb/s seems to be worse!?

Standard DVD picture quality is very good. Has some nice features for adjusting blackness. MP3's play fine and sound good.

Good over-all player, but if you are looking for something that will produce better than standard VCD quality, then look elsewhere.

The only bug with that player is that it freeze about 1 sec when it change layer on brough or rented DVD, this is why I don't give it a rate of 10 ...

it was open box at best buy, and was going for $75. (no box, no manuals, no cables, no remote - bare unit) i work there, so i persuaded management to let me have it for $50. i bought a few accessories. and a universal remote. works great. its my first DVD player and the only bad thing i can say about it is that it doesnt do long filenames for mp3s and it doesnt read the ID3 tag. oh well... for $50 - im happy.

Just an update to my previous post. I have just learned that for best compatibility with other DVD players, it is best to select DVD-ROM (UDF) in Nero then select UDF 1.02 on the UDF tab. I have tried this and DVD-R backups work fine. So I would not use the DVD-Video option in the wizard if you want compatibility with other players. Newer players may not recognize UDF 1.50 or higher.

I have backed up about a half a dozen movies now on Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD-R discs using the Sony DRU500 DVD-R/DVD-RW/DVD+R/DVD+RW drive (firmware 1.0g) without any problems.

I use DVDecrypter, DVD2One then burn with Nero 5.5.10. I use the Nero wizard as follows:

1) Choose DVD
2) Compile New DVD
3) Other DVD Formats
4) DVD-Video

The wizard generates an audio and video folder. I delete the audio folder. Under properties, I uncheck the Joliet box (don't now if that is necesssary) and type a name in the label tab and uncheck the simulation box. I leave everything else as it is.
I have also used RecordNow DX 4.60 wizard (choose Data CD) instead of Nero and it works just fine.
I recommend manually selecting the following files in addition to the ones DVDecrypter selects:

VIDEO_TS.ifo
VIDEO_TS.bup
VTS_01_0.bup

I think Nero needs these files to make a DVD-Video disc.
As others have suggested, I recommend using a DVD+RW disc to make sure all the burn settings are correct before burning to a R disc

Only my very first DVD-R was a coaster (I used Nero's Data DVD option).

The SD 2800 works just fine for me (no complaints) and the backup movies look the same as the originals on my 26" TV.

Like one of the other posts said, this player is a treat!
I have owned some real cheap, bad picture quality, skipping all the time, roughshod parts DVD players like Clairtone, Goldstar (LG), Apex and as soon as they were plugged in and the eject button hit, with a grind and a clunk, out came the tray. I now know that to get truely good DVD, you need to go name brand only! The big 5 being Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, JVC and Pioneer. I hit the eject button on this Toshiba SD-2800 and whoosh, it ejected slowly and silently. I was already impressed. So, on to the picture critiquing: Picture is almost perfect, compared to the other big names. About a 8-9 out of 10, fast motion scenes do not go jagged edged, so Action movies look excellent. Indications of good video decoding hardware. Sound on this unit is a 10 for sure. Even with just the RCA cables hooked up to my Toshiba 36" A50 T.V. sound like digital surround with it's Trusourround feature. I have a $1500 5.1 Digital Surround system with optical audio hooked up which is the ultimate, and this thing hooked up to the T.V. audio sounded great. It tricked me many times as the sound filled the room. If you follow the guides for making VCD's on this site, using Smartripper 2.41, DVD2AVI, and TMPGEnc 2.5 or above, you can make excellent VCD's and XVCD's that will rival any player that can do SVCD. That is the only reason it loses a point is no SVCD support. Still the VCD's look better with Component Video on a Toshiba T.V. and Toshiba DVD together as Toshiba has it's patented Colorstream technology which makes even VCD's look like DVD/VHS quality. I was blown away by the color purity by using Colorstream. I was satisfied with the support for all video hookups and digital audio hookups, it has them all. Work's good on scratched CD's. So I have put it to the test and it deserves to be in the earlier mentioned top 5! I will be keeping this player for a while. Thank's to all the other posters and for all the Guides on this site, as they have helped me fully understand DVD ripping and so much else that I have a reserved spot for www.dvdrhelp.com in my bookmarks forever.

For some time I could not play DVD's that I created using +RW media. Just kept on getting disc errors. Instead of using DVD Bitsetter (which works, but not on my DVD burner) I used NERO 5 and burned the DVD with DVD-ROM (UDF)(file system version UDF 1.02) setting as oppossed to the DVD-Video setting and it has been 100% successful. By the way my DVD Burner is an external USB 2.0 Sony CD/CD-RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW which is the best of both worlds since it supports both DVD-R and DVD+R camps.

This player worked well with all brands of media and generally played OK for 6 months. Then it quit. Since this is the second Toshiba I have had and they have both stopped working after a short time, it's time to look to other brands. DVD+R and DVD+RW were burned in Mode 2. No menus for VCD's or XVCD's.
