No complaints really. Have now burnt quite a lot of DVD's on my NEC ND-3500AG DVD writer with 100% success. Media used has been Packard Bell DVD-R (1x), Packard Bell DVD+R (2.4x), Phillips DVD+R (8x), MR DVD-R (4x),MR DVD+R (4x). The Packard Bell DVD+R/-R discs are very good value. I get them from my local Dixons in the UK at £3.99 for a 10 pack (with jewel case). Although they are only 1x or 2.4x, they have been very reliable so far. I have burnt dozens of each and they alway play OK on the Toshiba SD220E.
I have also created just a few VCD's which play OK using Phillips CD-R 80 52x. So far I have had only one attempt at making an SVCD (again on Phillips CD-R 80 52x) which loaded but did not play. I no longer have the manual for the DVD player & had assumed that it didn't play SVCD's until I came across this site which reports that it should. Therefore, I will have another try at SVCD.
The only problem I have really noticed with the SD220E is that I sometimes cannot switch the picture from letterbox to normal 4:3 aspect ratio (as I do not have a widescreen TV). Although this appears as a menu option on the DVD player, slecting 4:3 has no effect on the picture - it just stays in letterbox mode. I have this problem with commercial DVD's as well as my own "homebrew" ones. To be fair, I do not know if this is a problem with the player or just a feature of the DVD movie. |

I see that a few of you guys are having problems with DVD-R media, your problems are over! i use discs with the Super Azo dye layer...100% working! never even had a coaster with these discs. these discs are available here in the UK from branch's of CDR epublic, failing that Verbatim use the Super Azo dye. DO NOT confuse these discs with the inferior Azo media.
In the past i've tried branded ritek's with mixed results, so i stick to the Super Azo's(Why fix what isn't broke?..)
I use a pioneer 106 burner with latest firmware, Stomp Record Now software...(Forget Nero, trust me on this one..)The Super Azo's are 4 speed media, but i always burn at minimum speed...it NEVER FAILS! |

DVD-Rs now working 100% (see my previous review about disks freezing 20/30 mins in).
The problem was because I labelled the disks to make them look neat, must have caused imbalance. Now I am no longer putting labels on, all disks so far have worked 100% (about 20 DVD-Rs, Ritek G.04 unbranded).
Apparently putting labels on disks causing freezes is a common problem, but some players are more tolerant (e.g. Panasonic). |

Superb player for commercial disks but not having much luck with DVD-Rs despite 9 months of trying.
Similar problems as others - plays for 20/30 mins then pixelates and eventually locks up after 40/50 mins. Sometimes plays right thru first or second time, immediately after burning, but fails when I play the disk several weeks later. Have tried different media (Ritek G04, Maxell, TDK), writing at lower speeds, limiting it to Region 2, no labels, all with the same results - works fine after burning (9 time out of 10) but fails when I go back to the disk in a months time. Disks all still play fine on the PC DVD (LG 4040) and my mate's Panasonic set-top player. |

Yes this device can play DVD-R but only for some minutes. After about 20 minutes the pic freezes or gets sticky. hard sound comming out of the box, and it gets realy hot. To view a DVD-R full lenght you need to remove the cover - then the main device gets enough cooling. I bougth this device for watching DVD-RW which my Philips 750 wasn't capable. No i returnde it 2 times - same problem. I think I will change it to the Pioneer DVD-444 - hope this is better in thermal problems.
Well the picture is realy good - but playing DVD-R is not realy a good idea... |

I've recorder a Video DVD (EMTec DVD-R 120mn).
The player recognize the DVD but it will freeze the movie after playing for a few seconds.

It looks like the unit won't output anything other than RGB when playing an NTSC disc. When i select Video or S-Video through the menu, i just get b/w images, even when the TV is specifically set to be receiving an S-Video signal. With PAL discs everything seems fine. Can anyone else verify this?

An excellent player all round until today !
I have just purchased a Pioneer 106 DVD writer and have been writing DVD +R DVD Video disks that play fine on the 220, lastly i created a TDK DVD -R disk 1x speed and loaded it into the 220. It gave 'disc error' not NTSC, and now all my pal disks do the same, checked the BIOS which gives V-FORMAT : NTSC and I cannot change it back to pal/auto as the option is not visible in the setup picture menu.

my combination of LG GSA-4040B (Firmware A300) and Toshiba SD220E works very fine. Burned with the bundled software and Nero 5.5 latest update.
Media were TDK DVD-R, TDK DVD+R and Emtec DVD+RW. All work great!
Maybe you have media incompatibility?

| All DVD-R's or +R's burned with my brandnew LG-GSA 4040b don't work in this DVD-Player. I burn with Nero 6 and I don't know why !!! DVD's burned with the LG run on other DVD-Players without ANY problem and DVD's bruned with another DVD-Recorder run on my Toshiba also without ANY problem ... anybody expereienced the same ?!? I don't wann buy a a new Player - but it seems to me the last chance to fully use my recorder :( |

There still seems to be a lot of confusion over the SVCD sound synchronisation issue with this player. Apart from the angle button trick, as far as I know there are two solutions to this problem:
1) Use VOB Instant CD 6.5. I understand that this has now been taken over by Pinnacle, and they are SELLING an updated version. I don't know whether the updated version solves the problem or not. It happens that in the UK, VOB 6.5 was given away as a cover disc by PCPlus magazine a couple of months ago.
2) Use the fixed version of VCDImager that I have on my web site: http://www.billh.demon.co.uk
This is FREE! You can use it with, for example, VCDEasy. I have had a lot of emails from satisfied owners for whom it has solved their problems. Go to the thread in the DVD player forum:

I an downloading AVIs which play fine on my PC. I am using Virtualdub to make the sound into a WAV file, use TMPGEnc to convert to MPEG and the use VCDEasy to burn at 2x speed.
When played on my Toshiba SD220E it plays okay then freezes for a brief moment and then freezes again and again. Rewind back over the piont at which it freezes and sometimes it repeats the freeze and other times it doesn't. Have tried different CDRs and all have the same result. Put the CDR in the PC CDROM and it plays perfectly with no freezing!

Great multiregion DVD. Sharp picture and sound. Great conections for Home Cinema.
Plays almost everything but...
The well known lip sync problem on SVCD is something weird I know that with angle button we solve it but I really want to find a definitive solution. Any Idea about a version of firmware that could fix it?
My version is 1.400. Does Above version (I only know 1.500) keep same problem?
