CVD? $100 over 1 year 10 of 10 Comments: I like this DVD player a lot. I have had this player going on four years now, and I have never had any problems with it. It plays DVD-R just fine, even though a lot of people say it won't. Although, it does not like DVD+R DL discs. Attempting to play these results in a "Disc Error". As far as playing commercially-produced DVDs, I have never had any issues. It has no problem with damaged discs, either. Overall, a very good player.

CVD? $? over 1 year 5 of 10 Comments: Overall a pretty good player, but a bit fussy when it comes to writables. All DVD-R that I've tried work well, and most +R as long as Booktype is ROM. No success with +RW, no test yet with -RW. +R DL work fine when burned with my NEC ND-3520A, Pioneer DVR-108 is less successful, about 50%. Booktyping to ROM is automatic on both cases.

N/A 6 of 10 DVD-RAM Comments: Works well as a standard player, good picture and sound quality. My main requirement nowadays is to play DVD's I make myself, so far DVD+R and DVD-R play fine, the former only when set to DVD-ROM booktype. Tried a few makes of disk, they all work fine so far, recording at 4x or 8x as appropriate. Firmware version is 2.70 - exchanged a few emails with Toshiba UK, they can upgrade the firmware but reckon it won't help with ±RW disks, only improve compatibility with commercial ones that are troublesome.

CVD? $450 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: Very good player. Though had lots of problems getting burnt media work. Finally found by accident that 'Magmedia' works every time. Lots of stores sell them in Australia. Even Australia Post has them. Very reliable. Pelikan Quartet which is based in Sydney imports them so feel free to call them if you need.

My only beef with this player is the remote--tiny hard to press keys and no backlight.

I see a lot of people from the UK talking about getting it upgraded by Toshiba free of charge. I was wondering if any of you have had any luck getting this upgrade performed in the US. If so, please email me or post the steps you took to get the upgrade performed. I really don't want to throw $50 or $60 into it since a new cheap DVD player that plays all media is cheaper than this option. Thanks. mrbond@route-one.com

N/A No rating Comments: I had the firmware upgraded by Toshiba and my previously Multi Region player came back as a Region 2 only player. Phoned Toshiba and they say that there is nothing that they can do. They never advised me that this could be a problem. Any one else had this problem and any solutions? Others be aware of the problem.

N/A 7 of 10 DivX Comments: pretty good player... sadly, doesnt play vcds/svcds... as for these firmware upgrades people are talking about.. i never did one, mine is 2.4 not 3.0, and it plays DVD-R's perfectly (for the most part - some come up with subtitles on as default). used Pine and Eworks DVD-R medias.. work great. the region-free "hack" also does NOT work on PAL DVD-Rs that were transfered from a SVCD.. burned them all with Copy2DVD, work great. only 1 movie didnt play on a dvd-r, but that was probably user error..=) so, rom version should be 2.4+ to work with DVD-R lack of SVCD/VCD doesnt bother me at all.. most of those are low quality anyway.=)

N/A No rating Comments: Hello people, I had a problem with my DVD player, Toshiba 2109b, playing DVDs released by Disney. The films are, Lilo and Stitch and 101 Dalmations 2. Apparently this is due to the way they encode them? or something. I rang Toshiba up, who sent out a courier and picked up the DVD Player, which is about 3 years old, and delivered it back to myself with an upgraded firmware. This did not cost me anything. Once it was upgraded, it is now about to play DVD-R discs that I write without a problem. Cheers, cj

Gave the toshiba away. End of story.

N/A No rating DVD-RAM Comments: Hi, I tried playing dvd-r on my SD2109, and had no joy. I then found this site, and read the articles about upgrading the firmware. I too contacted Beryl and got the upgrade done for free, although it did take a while to get the player back. After the machine was upgraded, I tried burning various other dvd-r's (bulkpaq) using dvdxcopy etc, and they all failed to play. I nearly gave up, but then I read somewhere on the net that maybe it would work using dvdxcopy xpress. This takes out all the crap, and just gives you the main title. Once the image was burned I tried it again, and guess what, it worked (same media as previous attempts). I'm not sure if upgrading the firmware actually had any effects on mine, since the first few dvd-r's that were written with dvdxcopy didn't work. I suggest that you try dvdxcopy xpress and see if you have any luck. Maybe it's the way some programs write the data that the SD2109 doesn't like, and not actually the dvd-r's. I maybe wrong, but it's worth a try.

N/A No rating DVD-MP3 DivX MPEGISO Comments: hi mike here after a long absence. i have looked around the post and people are still having trouble getting their firmware updated (toshiba call it software but hey who are we to argue)any way toshiba i guess dont want a flood of old machines coming back for free upgrade service so you will probably get the run around. what you need to do is the same as what i did and inform them you are having issues with the machine when you watch certain movies ( a good one to call is the first matrix film as this had authoring issues) and say a few others for good measure. its not a good idea to say i just want to be able to play dvd-r as that wont be reason enough. they will ask you about the rom bios ver 3.000 plus but we dont know anything about that right and they will run you through the procedure of checking it. once confirm they should get it serviced for you . i emailed them today to get a respose, saying i had mine serviced last year and a friend has the same model with same problems so here it is: "Dear Mr Mike,(changed surname cos i can) Thank you for your recent enquiry. Please find the information that you requested as follows: If there is a software issue with the other Toshiba DVD unit then you will need to contact Beryl on 01276 694506 and advise of the firmware version and she will arrange the upgrade for you. N/A No rating Comments: Mike, Lee, and jcjimenezl I tried contacting Toshiba too at the 1-800-631-3811 phone number I talked to 3 different people all which tell me there is no firmware upgrade DVD for the sd2109 model. They all tell me I will have to bring it to a service center to be updated. It will cost me $60 + tax if I bring it to a service center :( How did you guys get it serviced for free or how did you get a firmware upgrade DVD? Please tell me step by step so I too can get a fw upgrade. Thanks.

N/A No rating Comments: I read Mike's post and I too contacted Toshiba about the SD2109 player and after being passed on twice I was eventually passed on to a women (Beryl) who arranged for my 4 year old player to be bought back to Toshiba for firmware update FOC and since it's return I can now play quiet a range of DVD-R. DVD+R is a no go full stop. Firmware before upgrade was 1.5 after upgrade 3.1. I backup DVD-R on my Sony DW-10a writer and they play flawless on the SD2109.
