Ok, this is an update from my July 20, 2003 post. I have learned a lot more about DVD players and burners since then. I ended up buying an RCA DRC212N at Walmart after that last post simply because it said it would play DVD+R/W. I knew nothing else about the quality of the video and audio DAC's etc. I didn't even know what bitsetting was yet. Anyway, my RCA finally stopped reading my rewriteable DVD's of any kind, so I pulled out the old Toshiba again, and tried it out. I now have an LG GSA-4167B that can do bitsetting. I do it as DVD-ROM. So I popped a DVD+R (verbatim) that I had burned a home movie to with the DVD-ROM bitsetting, and the movie started playing. I couldn't hear any sound at first, which is what happened once before with a DVD-R, so I messed with the audio options on the DVD player, and found it was set to PCM or something. I changed it to analog 2 ch, and it worked fine. I assume that it would work with the DVD+RW's too, if I could do bitsetting on them also. Unfortunately my burner cannot do that, yet.
I also found that the SD-1600 has a 10 bit 27 mhz video dac. In any case, over S-Video on an old Tube tv, it looks pretty nice and clear. Perhaps not as good as component would look on a better tv, but it was a lot better than the old RCA.
In any case, I bought it in December of 2000 for $200 at the RC Willey's, and it has done really well for what it does. It does not play mp3's, or jpg's, and that would be very nice, since I like to do slideshows for my kids once in a while, but for now I can at least use it for watching home movies. |

| I have had this Toshiba DVD player for a few years, and I know that it is an older. With that said, I am still unhappy with its difficulty in reading burnt DVDs. I am happy that I found out about its acceptance of DVD-R on here, because I was using DVD+R up until that point. I will use nothing but DVD-R from now on. |

Have had this DVD Player since 2000 (my first) or so and has been quite good. Recently it acts if it needs a cleaning or is just having some increased issues playing some DVDs, especially newer Disney Releases or some scratched disks my Sony SLV-D100 will play.
On the other hand I was suprised to find that even with the above issues I just found that it will flawlessly play DVD-Rs I have recorded. In some cases they have been backups I have made (with ShrinkWrap) of the same Disney titles that would not play propery in this player and at times would also be a problem with my Sony SLV-D100 also (Original DVD will work but may require several reinserts of the disk). Makes me believe that the real issue is with the Media being used or their Authoring.
Wish it could play VCD, but with the DVD-R working I don't really care anymore. Want to check out with Patched DVB source recorded to DVD-R without re-encoding. Sony SLV-D100 works well with that and but another player for DVB playback would be nice.

The SD1600 is a decent player that I've had since 2000 (got it as a gift)
I too read back through the manual (as a geek I keep those) and sure enough it says explicitly "You cannot play discs of CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW, etc., even if they may be labled marks listed above [DVD-Video]"
DVD-R is working just fine (burned at 8x no less)

| Using TDK DVD+R 4x media with this player is not a good idea. I got some direct copies to work (DVDBackup) but authoring my own with Nero has caused a lot of issues. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Bitsetting helps but just using DVD-R's helps more. |

and DVD+R Maxell 4x burned with 8x Dell 6100a
MAxELL disks are great in my experience, no coasters and with tax and all in canadian dollars $1.38 per disk which is a good price for such a quality disk

I am trying and trying to get a burned DVD slideshow to work on this player. I've read all of the comments on this site, contacted Toshiba and contacted the slideshow software company. I am trying for the 5th time - DVD-R have worked for picture - but no sound. I'm trying again burning with PCM audio to see if that will work.

Not sure if anyone is interested, but this player WILL play DVD+R media - as long as the recorder is set to create a -R booktype using bitsetting.
I have successfully recorded and played disks burned on DVD+R on my BTC 1004 with the latest firmware that supports bitsetting. |

This DVD player does what it's supposed to do.
The only snag I've seen is that it will not play any audio encoding on a DVD save Dolby AC3. Not MPEG1 Layer II, not even Linear PCM.
Just a word of warning. |

| Have burned quite a number of TDK 2x DVD-Rs and Maxell 2x DVD-Rs with my LG GBA-4040B (multi-format 4x) and they have all worked great on this DVD player. I'm staying away from no-name brands at the moment because I've heard of problems with them on this and other players. |

| Got this free when I bought my big screen TV. It's bare bones - In fact, I probably wouldn't even use it but the salesman talked me into paying $65 for the color stream cable to connect it to my TV for the best picture quality. Very sensitive and tends to get warm and feeze up. Does not work on DVD+RW - gives "disc error" message. |

| DVD+R works for me. My DVD Burner = HP DVD Writer 200i 2.4x speed. Don't know what the bit rate is set at - just factory defaults. Copied DVD from DVD Shrink then burned to new Fuji DVD+R using CopyToDVD all default settings. Plays just fine on Toshiba SD1600. Per the ratings below and people who say DVD+R's don't work may have something to do with the bit rate (2) thing talked about down below. I was not able to get VCD's to work - but didn't try the CD-RW as mentioned below. Also will try DVD+RW later... |

This player rocks. Always has. Now it rocks even more since I got burned DVD's to play. The previous reviewer was right. It does not play DVD+R or DVD-RW at all. It's too old. Here's what I did to play burned DVD's (and forget about the bit-setting stuff....after hours on the web, I couldn't find anything and the below method works without hacks).
I got DVD Shrink 2.3 (amazing free software)ripped the movie at Compression level 10. I burned the DVD using Nero 6. I opened StartSmart then selected Photo and Video>Make DVD-Video. Double clicked inside VIDEO_TS and put everything that DVD Shrink ripped into that folder. I burned at 1X though I don't know if that had anything to do with it. Ran to the DVD Player and it played perfectly. I used Memorex 4X DVD-R I bought at Target (it's like a WalMart). I had tried Memorex 4X DVD+R and Memorex 2.4X DVD-RW with NO SUCCESS before this. I doubt any DVD+R will work since this DVD player is too old. I used an Optorite DD0203 to burn with Firmware 2.16. GREAT BURNER!!
Good Luck and stop believing the previous hype. This is tried and true. |

TDK -R and Fujifilm -R work with the toshibac 1600. DVD+ is listed but I don't really believe this since it's an old model.
Above media burned with LG GSA-404B without flaws. memorex dvd+ wouldn't play.

I just burned some movies on Fuji DVD-R (4x) bought at Best Buy with my new Sony DRU510a drive, and all three I have burned work great.
I have not tried DVD+R because the Sony drive doesn't support bit setting change. |

OK, I figured out how to burn DVD+R to make it work on this player. I've only used the Fuji DVD+R but it works now and I am very happy.
Use DVD2one, then Nero 5.5.10.42 to burn using DVD UDF/ISO method, make sure that UDF is set to 1.02. Hope this works for everyone else. |
