Had this player for quite a while now. On the whole pretty pleased. Has played most DVD's I've thrown at it.
Nearly all -r ok
Nearly all +r ok (no bitsetting necessary)
Only burned a few DVD DL +r. Play fine with bitsetting to DVD ROM, though some have problems when fast forwarding.
Some DVD RW +r work and some don't. Current recorder sets them to DVD ROM. Problems seem to be brand dependent. Ok with Sony and Verbatim RW. Won't even load with JVC branded RW. |

Had this unit for several years and generally happy with it. It does have Audio sync problems with SVCD discs. VCD are OK.
Have only tried DVD+RW generated by Tevion/Medion MD40741 Recoreder (discs were finalised in the MD40741). |

I absolutely despise this player. I bought it on recommendation of a friend and was immediately disappointed with its performance.
First Problem: Main intended use was for mp3 playback. I found unless you had all filenames punctuation free the player would report disk error. So if you have a file called "XYZ song No.2.mp3" it would read the .2.mp3 as the extension and fail.
Second Problem: If you burn mp3 disks in anything but ISo mode2 throw them in the bin, it wont play them! For reference, I used Nero 5.5.2 for burning.
Third Problem: When loading mp3 disks (those that did work!) the picture on the TV was severly distorted by RF like noise.
Fourth Problem: Mp3 song titles rarely worked when ID3 tags present. When large number of files were on a disk e.g. 150+ song titles were incorrectly displayed.
Fifth Problem: Often when playing VCD there would be no time display, making resumption of play impossible.
Sixth Problem: Often found whn playing back DVD's, layer transition would cause lockup.
You might say I bought a dud machine---- tried all these failed disks on the mates SD1300, didnt work either.
Answer: Disposed of this piece of junk and bought a sony Dvpnc615. Thank God for Sony!!!! All the disks that did not work on the SD1300 work perfectly on the Sony.

I tried making SVCD to play on the SD-1300.
I had success when I used tmpgenc to make a mpeg2 with CBR of 2400kbps. This fixed both the audio sync and jerky video problems.
Using VCDEasy to create the CD, rather than Nero had no effect. The bitrate seems to be the magic factor.
Used TDK and TEAC CD-Rs. |

Had problems with SVCD. Havent got one to work yet. Using DVD2SVCD to create .bin/cue files. The disc work fine on PC but the audio soon becomes out of sync on the player.
Does pause when changing sides on a normal DVD.
It also stoped playing everything but DVD at one point but I sent it back to and it was fixed under warranty.
Also does not play DVD+R. |

* With subtitle test discs (CVD,SVCD) didn't show

* There are 2 models of this player SD-1300A & SD-1300H
* The instruction manual says, it supports only up
to VCD equipped with PBC function ver. 2.0.
* After converting with DVD2SVCD tool, there were no
sync. problems with audio (There is an option "Movie offset seconds" in bbMPEg, thet comes with DVD2SVCD program, that correct sync. problems)
* Very good quality of sound and video, maybe not all
the formats supported, but what is supported, works
very nice.

Yes, SVCD's work fine. Ones burnt with Nero will have the audio out of sync but ones multiplexed and burnt with Roxio VideoPack are fine.
Easiest way to do the burning is follow the Tmpgenc 'Project Wizard' for creating an SVCD, then just before encoding, unlock the settings by loading the 'unlock' template (in the extras folder) and selecting 'ES Audio+Video' to create two seperate elementary streams. Then after encoding, open VideoPack and multiplex the streams from there choosing 'SVCD' as the stream type. Then drag the file to the timeline and burn.
No sync problems and excelent picture quality. |

DVD playback is excellent, including RCE discs.
SVCD playback has audio sync problem when video and audio are muxed with any application other than VideoPack 5.1. Can't work out why VideoPack works amd bbMpeg doesn't. SVCD recorded on Imation 700Mb CDRs.
MP3 playback is good however long filenames are not supported.
All in all a good player. |

This machine plays DVDs almost perfectly. The 4-step zoom enables users to fill a 4:3 TV with a 2.35:1 aspect movie (though why you'd want to I don't know) with little loss of quality. It's a little on the wide side and doesn't fit into my hi-fi cabinet easily and as a result has to sit alone outside of my setup when I want to use it.
On purchasing I noted that SVCD wasn't included in the support list. However I did try a SVCD and although it worked, the audio sync was way out and led me to believe that SVCD support was an afterthought and wasn't fully implemented before it's release deadline. This may be the reason why there is no indication that of it's SVCD compatibility.
When playing VCD and CDs I noticed that the dynamics of the analog audio output is a little extreme for my TV to handle and ended up distorting quite badly, plugging this into a more forgiving device such as a hi-fi resolved this problem though.
The only other flaw I can tell is when the laser stops to focus on the next layer on a DVD, this stops playback of the movie for a few seconds and can be a little frustrating.
Other than that, this machine is great. There are no colour-banding artifacts, a very intuitive remote and isn't as noisy as some other players I have owned. |

Plays VCD's great, but I was having the same audio sync problems with SVCD's. Solution....make sure your ausio stream is at 44.1khz and you multiplex with Roxio Videopack 5. It then plays perfect SVCD's to extremely high bit rates.
Great DVD player with zoom function and of course region free. |

| VERY UNHAPPY WITH THE TOSHIBA SD-1300. I am having the same audio sync problems with SVCD's; however the picture is perfect. It also plays OK on other DVD players, but not the Toshiba. I encoded using TEMPGEnc / Ligos and burnt SVCD's with Nero / VCDEasy; made no difference. Converted to a normal MPEG1 VCD and the audio was in sync. Is there some kind of firmware upgrade for this device. Thanks. |

| True, SVCD's on CD-R/CD-RW - the sound is out of sync. Took me 10 wasted discs to figure this was a problem with this player. BUT!!! USE Roxio VideoPack 5 to burn as XVCD or SVCD and EVERY disc was FINE!!! NO sync problems any more! NERO was crap for SVCD (with the plugin of course) as it always gave sync problems. So all in all with the SVCD problem solved this is an excellent player, no regrets. |

OK,
as to SVCD audio sync, it can be an issue.
My experience:
Nero == bad synch
VCDEasy == Good Sync.
The survey needs DVD+RW in 2 modes.
This player will only read DVD+RW in Special Compatibilty mode, or Mode2.
Not compatible with Standard Mode 1.
Mode 2 can be set on most DVD+RW devices.
(Mode 2 apparently has the DVD answer as a DVDROM)

I bought this player and then returned it because I couldn't get SVCD to play in sync. Video was fine even with a bitrate of 2496 (video) + 224 (audio). But the audio lagged the video on every disc I tested. The exception was 2 samples from this site (the ntsc topgun one and the PAL one which depicts a heist). But these 2 samples still only played in sync a couple of times. The rest of the time they were out of sync from the beginning, like all other samples. I tried datastream 80 min cdrw, plextor 74 min cdrw and verbatim blue-back 74 min cdr. My home made samples consisted of
1. divx converted to svcd using tmpg in some instances and the cinemacraft encoder in others; and
2. A dvd rip using dvd2svcd with the cinema craft encoder.
I went to a store and ran my test discs on the SD-1300 and experienced the same problems. The discs played in sync on the pioneer 344 although there were some video problems with the samples converted from the divx (but the dvdrips were great, that's another story though).
Replaced it with a Pioneer 344 and all's good now ;)
So in short, be very careful about getting this player if you want SVCD support. BTW people elsewhere have reported sync problems also.
PS: VCDs burned on the same cdrws played in sync. |

Purchased 17th December 2001. $488AUS.
Have only done some prelimjinary testing but so far I think this player is great :)
I really like the 4 zoom modes. Allows you to get rid of the black bars on tv's that aren't widescreen. I progressive zoom would have been ideal but the majority of the players don't have a zoom option at all, and those that do have other faults so this is the best of both worlds.
I got this player after reading ALOT of different reviews of this player on here and other sites.
A good in-depth review is here with a few pix also.
http://www.michaeldvd.com.au/HardwareReviews/Toshiba1300/Toshiba1300.html
http://www.castel.com.au/products/toshiba/sd1300.htm
I got this player for $488AUS from Hi-fi Warehouse in Ringwood, Victoria, Australia. This was for the world/multi-zone version. The region 4 version was about $30AUS cheaper.
The normal retain price for this play was around $500AUS at JB hi-fi and Dick Smiths Powerhouse.
I found the mp3 playback fine. Contrary to other peoples reports. Maybe this is a slightly different revision? I'll have to check the exact model number later when I do some svcd/xvcd testing.
With the mp3 playback all file names and directories are limited to 8 characters in the on screen menu. would have been nice if it recognised long files names but the sound quality was quite good.
This player has all the connections (see the review at michaels dvd for pix of connections) that I needed plus it has a component video output for when I upgrade to a better wide screen tv.
DVD playback was good was expected.
The controller seems ok. Button layout could possibly have been a little better but it's only a personally thing.
I'll report back when I've done some testing with s/xvcd's.
All in All this player is the best one I could find in this price bracket ($300-$600AUS)that plays pretty much everything DVD-video, DVD-R, VCD,CD,CD-R/RW, MP3. |
