Here's a sure-fire way to fix the sync-problem with SVCD's on the Toshiba SD220E (and the SD120E).

Part 1 is only necessary if you have an existing unsync-ed SVCD you want to convert from. If you just want to write a compatible .mpg file skip straight to Part 2. For Part 2 you must have version 6.5 of Instant CD+DVD, not version 7 it's totally different. 6.5 was available on simtel.net last time I looked.

Part 1 - Extracting the movie from an SVCD with 'VCDGear' (www.vcdgear.com)

01- Load 'VCDGear'.
02- In the drop-down list, choose 'mpeg -> mpeg'.
03- Check the box for 'Fix MPEG Errors'.
04- Click 'load', a file-browser appears, select your cd-drive, select the 'MPEG2' folder, select the 'AVSEQ01.MPG' file, click 'Open'.
05- Choose where you want to save the movie file on your hard-disk, and give the file a name. Click 'Save'.
06- Click 'Start'.
07- When finished, close VCDGear.

Part 2 - Creating a SVCD with 'Instant CD+DVD 6.5'

01- Load 'Instant CD+DVD'.
02- Choose Video, choose InstantVideo.
03- If the wizard appears, click 'Cancel'.
04- From the File-menu, choose 'New SuperVCD'.
05- In the lower-window, find your movie file (.mpg) and drag it to the upper-window (right-hand pane).
06- *IMPORTANT* Click the video file in the left-hand pane of the upper-window to highlight it.
07- From the Project-menu, choose 'Create Project'.
08- A dialog-box will appear 'Virtual CD Successfully Created', click 'OK'.
09- Close InstantVideo, click 'No' then 'Yes' when prompted.
10- Insert a blank-CD, load 'Instant CD+DVD' again.
11- This time choose Data, and choose InstantDisc.
12- When loaded, your virtual-disc should appear at the bottom of the dialog that is showing. Click it.
13- The project should now be showing in the left-hand pane of the upper-window, right-click it and choose 'Properties'.
14- In the dialog, choose a CD-size large enough. Click OK.
15- Right click the project again, choose 'Write'.
16- Choose a write-speed (the slower the better), choose 'No Simulation', then click 'Write'.
17- If a dialog appears complaining there is not enough room, click 'Ignore'.
18- When finished, you can close InstantDisc and delete the movie file from your hard-disk.

Thanks to the previous poster who put me onto this solution using Instant CD+DVD.

210E is a superb player - excellent picture quality and no real problems playing commercially recorded films, except for occasional freeze when changes layer. Do have one DVD film that freezes and wont go on to next scene. Interestingly, same disk also freezes at exactly same place using a different Toshiba player (sorry cant remember model) but plays through with no problem using the Toshiba DVD drive in my daughter's PC.

Philips DVD+RW disks, written using a Philips DVDRW228 writer (burned using Sonic MyDVD) with the bitsetting set to DVD-ROM, play perfectly OK in the 210E. Have not yet tried DVD+R.

Had a lot of problems with VCD slideshow recorded on PC. Plays OK on the PC but picture freezes on the 210E although music soundtrack keeps playing OK.

Comments:
Just started burning with Pioneer A04 burner using Ulead MovieFactory software. So far I have found that the cheaper Bulkpaq/Princo media DVD-R media work but have skipping problems. The White label Lo speed (1x) Generation 3 DVD-R (approx $1.25 each) run perfectly without problem. The player is a little more fussy with DVD-RW media. So far only White label Gold Edition seems to run. Failed completely with Datasafe and Princo brands.
