Excellent recorder, there are some negative comments here about confusing remote and fuctions. At first it does seem like a bit much but after you read the manual and figure it out it's quite easy.
I bought this recorder mostly for transferring VHS to DVD. Having the 160GB Hard drive is VERY handy. I don't use it for recording TV programs but if I did I would imagine it to be really useful for recording and playing back tv shows as well.
The quality of the video it produces is quite good, you can easily change the bitrate of the video and audio and it shows you how much each bitrate will hold on a normal 4.6GB disk. It's also very easy to edit your already recorded files, adding chapters is very simple.
I like to burn them from the recorder then create my own chapters and menus on my computer. You can also make pretty nice basic menus using just the recorder.
I have also had no problems playing the created discs on other players as well as on my computer for editing.
I haven't had any problems using ridata ritek disks, or fujifilm. Those are the only ones I have tested.
It has Coaxial cable, S-Video, Firewire and 3 RCA Inputs. So no matter what you are recording from this machine can do it.
There are not many things I dislike about this player
Some people have complained about it being a bit loud, although you can hear a fan even when the machine is turned off it's not as loud as a normal computer turned on so it doesn't bother me.
I really don't have anything to say about it's DVD playback and support since I don't ever use this as a player, just for recording.
If there was one thing that could make this machine better it would be the ability to convert an NTSC input into a PAL disc. However I don't think any such dvd recorder exists, so I will just stick to using a computer for the conversion
If you want an easy, good quality way to record stuff to DVD with the convenience of a 160GB hard drive to store video then get this player. |

Junk. It could have been great but it is so stupidly sensitive to copy protections, it routinely fouls up. This idiotic box has even refused to copy my own home videos, claiming the content was "copy protected"!
Beyond the utterly unpredictable and enfuriating interruption of recordings to splash its claim of copy protection, this Toshiba junkbox forces you to jump through hoops of complexity for even tasks that should be simple (and are simple, on other machines). Don't bother trying to alter the bitrate, audio or any other setting without the 3 manuals at hand.
Oh, take note of the fact that there is another collection of buttons under a door on the remote control. It seems Toshiba thinks more buttons == more value.
Every message it splashes upon the screen must either be acknowledged with a key press or endured for however long the machine decides to display it.
Don't be lured by the hard drive this thing contains. Use your money to buy a bare computer and set up a MythTV box. I will never, ever buy another product that has 'Toshiba' on it.

Tried 16x Imation DVD+R disk burned with "ultra dvd creator" from Aone-media. It works greae on my toshiba even thou my laptops dvd player had problems with playback. Nice.
I do not like the design of the remote, this could be much better, and the startup time from poweron to ready should be faster or atleast the diskloader should pop out emediate after pushing the eject butto. Its boring to sit down and wait for haf a minute.
It should hav been supported NTSC format, but I can live with it and the player should be multi region. I cant see the use of region codes any more...
Playback quality is excellent and the HDD functionality is working perfect.

I've had this until for 3 months now and I just love everything about it.
It's easy to operate, the editing facilities are outstanding and virtually all settings are user selectable. Easy one shot record, playback of DVD whilst recording on HDD, fast dubbing in both directions, easy navigation and programme delete, easy timer setup.
It's a delight. As the other reviewer says, there is some fan noise but I don't find it in the least oppresive and mine is out in the open.
Don't expect it to play copy DVDs though - mine usually says "disk dirty" when I insert either a DVD+R or DVD-R, although it seems to play DVD+RW OK, when it's not officially suposed to. Weird.
Occasionally it WILL play DVD+R/DVD-R, but it stutters, freezes and stops about 1 hour into the programme. It plays it's own disks back OK.
It could be the way I record them, or the media used, but I have 3 other DVD players in the house and they all play my disks perfectly. Consequently, I now have a (£30 from Ebay) JVC slim DVD player mounted on top of it for my DVD -R and + R playback and everybody is happy.
Buy one - you won't be disappointed. |

I’ve received a new SX34 from Toshiba after their repair center said my SX32 was unfixable.
The SX32 was over the one year warranty by about 4 days, but Toshiba agreed to replace the unit and to my surprise the newer SX34 arrived at my door. Yikes and gadzooks! Amazing! The problem I had on the old unit was its’ inability to finalize discs regularly. It would sometimes work , but mostly not and then would not always be able to read its’ own disk after finalizing. The HDD performed well and I never experienced any picture problems. I’m just an electronics hobbyist not a tech, so here’s my nickels’ worth.
At any rate, the SX34 manual says it reads SVCD and VCD. I have a VCD which played without a problem. I have tried playing +R and +RW (from Liteon 5001 and RCA DR8000N) and they played back without a hitch even tho Toshiba does not specifically mention this. It records to DVD-R, -RW plus ram. I have just finalized three Fuji DVD-Rs with about 4 hours of recording on each. After writing the titles and chapter menus, it finalized perfectly in about a minute even after a message popped up saying finalization could take several minutes. It takes about 15 minutes to transfer HDD recordings (4 hrs at LP) to a DVD-R, 4x. The Fujis were the same disks the SX32 choked on. The manual recommends TY, 4x and 8x for DVD-R and JVC 2x and 4x for DVD-RW and apparently was tested using a Panasonic 4x disk. I have been using Fuji -R and -RW with no problems yet. Also used a verbatim inkjet printable (MCC 01RG20) and works fine. I prefer the verbatims because of some bad batches of Fujis I had encountered.
I won’t go into the all the extra recording, video, editing features because there are many. The TV Guide is a plus (8 day advance programming )and the 160 gig HDD is double the size of the SX32. VCR+ is not avail-able on this unit but the TV Guide options more than make up for it.....more flexibility. It claims to have a set-ting for 0 ire/7.5 ire selection, which is the standard or enhanced settings. Toshiba tells me 0 ire is the enhanced setting and the 7.5 is standard setting and you can definitely see the contrast difference between the two which is recorded to the disk. (Has input and output level settings.)
The disks I finalized and played back on my DVD players, a JVC , a Mintek 1600 and a Sony, didn’t seem to have a problem and the picture looked very good using a 61” Pioneer projection screen. Black level prob-lems appear to have been corrected. Color saturation appears good (can be manually adjusted) and the move-ment is fluid even in the 2.0Mbps setting which I tested with a movie recorded off cable with most of the digital noise being contained at the expense of some detail of course, but still acceptable. Not very bothersome to me for casual viewing and erasing. It has noise reduction filters of course, but the stronger your signal the better your playback will be. It has a high Mbps setting of 9.2 which seems to make an excellent picture reproduction.
The variable bit rate is nice and goes down to 1.0 for eight hour recording. You don’t want to go there
and expect much quality of course. The active variable bitrate setting can be shown fluctuating on the front display panel and the title information onscreen will show exactly the bitrate you recorded the program at as well as what the movie or sitcom is (was) about if you recorded off the TV Guide.
The dubbing of my old s-vhs and vhs tapes seems improved and looks like noise reduction has been improved, at least it appears better than the SX32 as I remember and overall pretty decent in LP (4hr mode) depending on the quality of your picture source. If you’re low on HDD space, the plus/minus zoom feature makes it handy to enhance an lp recording for playback if you have say a 60” projection and reduce it to a 45” picture. It appears sharper and cleaner.
I still like the quality of my Liteon 5001 for dubbing my old B&W serials in the 4 hr mode as it seems to have more or a better noise reduction filter (filters) for some of the more grainy or noisy tapes. However, I think the Toshiba picture quality is still very good, (IMHO). The TBC works but not quite as strong as the Panasonic DMR-ES10. Luckily my old JVC HR-S9500U (w/TBC) straightens up any problematic tapes. I do most of my dubbing in the four hour mode, (depending on the tape condition) but the best picture quality recording I perceive is at 4Mbps setting and above.
One downside is the constant fan noise even when shut down, but the unit feels cool to the touch. I have it in a tv type cabinet with glass door and good air circulation, so it is not too noticeable for me. On the up side it loads faster, quicker startup and reads and writes disks much better and the black level problem, at least to the eye, seems corrected. From a consumer viewpoint , I can say it’s a definite improvement from my old SX32 and after about a month and a half of use it is performing problem free. |
