Doesn't play (S)VCD. Not that important though ;).
Positive, quality is great, features are great, price is outstanding. Play HD DVD content authored to DVD+/-R(W) both h264 and MPEG content.
Negatives -
Slow to load. Remote seems cluttered. Upscaling DVD Picture quality is only on par with my $50 Magnavox DVD player.

Make sure to upgrade firmware (as of now 2.7 is available)
Burning a ISO CD was easier than over ethernet for me.
Over all a very good HD player for $99
I use 1080i over component and HD-DVD looks great,
but regular DVDs does not upconvert to 1080i over component.
If you first back up the DVD to DVDR when it will play at 1080i so it's just a DRM issue.

I gotta admit I can't tell the difference in video between my 1080P upconvert Philips player.......although this player is only 1080i (24fps) rather than 1080p (60fps) however the audio is INSANELY better! The player takes about 60 seconds to start up and about 30 more seconds to start the disc. Also I couldn't get the darn thing to run via HDMI to my HDTV plasma so RGB Component cables are running the picture. All in all I'm pretty impressed with the unit and the functionality of the HD-DVD experience especially the menus.......very very cool. BTW my first choice in HD-DVD had to be Batman Begins, but 300 and Superman Returns....followed closely by the Matrix Trilogy will be next.....my luck Blu-ray will gain market share and I just through money down the crapper!
The unit doesn't have a coax video on the back in which my home HD cable box and PS2 both run Optical cables which mean I had to downgrade one of them to connect this unit to my JBL receiver. Ugg |

Plays back HD DVD with a great picture. Does a great job of upconverting SD DVD's. Have had problems playing discs (rentals) with minor scratches.
Haven't had any of the other problems that people have reported with combo discs, etc. |

Excellent player. No problems what so ever.
Plays all brands of dvd media, even the cheapest brand.
Up-converting equal to the OPPO 971h and no macro blocking.
Play back of HD DVD movies is fantastic.
There is a firmware upgrade (1.5) that helps the DVI to HDMI problem. |
