This my first DVD recorder. It is VERY picky on DVD media: every second DVD-R disk (Memorex, CMC MAG. AM3) is reported as "dirty", but once it acepts a disk it burns it. Two things aggravated me with this burner:
1) It refuses to play PAL DVD.
2) When I connect it to a videosignal from another DVD player and try to record it, it tells me that the other disk is copy-protected and stops the job. I'd like to repeat: I connect it to the simplest ANALOG input signal and that is not COPYING, it is RECORDING which it is supposed to do for the money paid.

Nice basic unit for my needs. Recording to dvd -r, -rw, and dvd ram is fine with me since -r appears to be the lowest common denominator for compatibility across the board. The other reason I'm not concerned is that HD dvd systems will be hitting the market and make all the current stuff prehistoric. -r and probably +r will be backward compatible on the new systems since customers insist on it.

My first project was to copy 65 8mm tapes to 65 dvd -r disks. It worked like a champ and appears to be a very reliable recorder. The menu system works fine and I like being able to set my recording from 1 hour to 6 hours, depending on my needs.

Recording from my Comcast HD/dvr box also works great. Excellent input source that creates excellent dvd's (for home family use only of course ;)

Since it works well with what I use it for, i give the DR2 a strong thumbs up.

A bit of time required to become familiar with all the features. I have a Panasonic recorder as well and the Toshiba has more options but is not as intuitive.

I really like that you can create a DVD with no menu at all (first play) as most of what I record does not require the ugly and useless (single choice) menu screen that most DVD recorders seem to create by default.

Nice Firewire (DV) implementation with PIP.

The bad news. Can't always read DVD-Rs from my Pioneer A07 burner, as another reviewer has already commented on.

Can't always read it's OWN un-finalized DVD-R discs either, resulting in a coaster, but it *might* be the media I'm using as I've encountered a few duds just lately. Seems suspect though as I use the same media with the Panasonic and have NEVER burned a coaster on it.

Takes a long time to load ANY disc.

While it's nice to be able to set the bit rate incrementally, it's not accurate! If I need 130 minutes of record time, then I should be able to set it to 130 minutes and let the recorder figure out the optimal bit rate - Panasonic does this very well. I've been burned (pun intended) by the Toshiba a number of times now (stops recording a few minutes short of estimated time) so I now set to a lower bit rate than it tells me is necessary.

Bottom line: overall, a disappointment in view of some promising features. If you don't need the DV input, I'd recommend you purchase a Panasonic DMR-E55 for the same money.

Doesn't read or write to DVD+R or DVD+RW. Writes to DVD-R & -RW in DVD-Video mode only. Writes to DVD-RAM in DVD-VR mode only. Easy interface and simple manual. In no time I was very comfortable with the basic features.

Has built in noise reduction and appears to clean up VHS tapes alot. However a few of my commercial videos I was not able to copy to DVD as the recorder's anti-piracy software warned me it wouldn't dupe copyrighted material.

Another disappointment was it's inability to play +R media. I tried Memorex, Maxell, Kodak and Benq discs and all were unrecognizable.

It has played any -R disc so far.

For recording I've been using -RW Memorex 1x & 2x and Verbatim 1x. The only time the speed means anything is when you finalize the DVD (so it can play in other DVD players or DVD-Rom drives) or when you are erasing clips or reformating the drive.

For RAM I've been using a Pioneer RAM disc that came with my Pioneer A05 burner.

The Toshiba does include a Toshiba RAM cartridge but my burners and DVD plays & ROMs are not able to read a cartridfe RAM.

I like this unite alot, only wished it would play +R or +RW.

Comments:
I actually use the D-R2 in my profession.

I am an event videographer (mostly weddings) a business opertunity came up in which I and 4 other cammera men in my company would need to cover an event inwhich the participants need their performance recorded. So began my search for a dvd recorder. I ended up buying 5 of these units for each camera.

Pros
Fairly quick to get around
Detailed Display allows monitorless operation
Great picture quality
Decent looking menus

Cons
-No direct/live record from DV cam (very bad)
-Other burned DVD media from my Pioneer A07 dosen't play good specificly crashes when fast forward ro rewind (note that most dvd players have no problem with the same media)
-takes to long to finalize aalthough this may be true of all dvd recorders right now.
-I wish I could make and save templates with the event name and menu layout so i don't have to retype the same info ever session

I wish that somebody made a professional DVD recorder
specificly for capturing live events. If any one has a sujestion It is welcome over here.

I don't mind buying 8x media or spending the dough for a good one with hard drive (not to nessary for what I do)
