I've been happy with this player, I've got two of them. A problem has arisen when I try to play a home made DVD +R DL disc. That's how I wound up here, looking for answers. Looks like it may be the disc manufacturer. I was using Memorex DVD +r DL DVDs. I would think that would be a good disc, but it looks like I'll have to try the Imation. If anyone has any comments please let me know.

This is my third review as I have gained additional input.

As I reported before, the player will not read the second layer of DVD+R DL when burned on a VERBATIM+R DL Disc. However, I reburned the file onto an IMATION+R DL Disc and it read it beautifully. I tried a second dual layer file with the same positive result. I did notice that it burned the Imation disc at 2.4x. The Verbatim was burned at 4x, but when I checked the options, that was the lowest selection available. I use ULead VideoStudio 8 editing software which also handles 16:9 ratio (if your camcorder will produce it) I use a Sony DRU 720A burner which comes packaged with Nero 6 SE (Sony Edition). The Nero package has some pretty good stuff for burning, but for home videos, the VideoStudio 8 has more professional options.

In response to the reviewer regarding burning speeds on the DVD R discs, I have not had any problems letting the software program select the default speed. The problem with Sony players, which I use, is incompatibility with different brands. They recommended Verbatim with their burner and put down Imation, yet I found that the Imation burns fine with their burner and outperforms on their players.

I am beginning to think the only superior thing about Sony is their prices.

I have a Samsung V4800 player which plays the Verbatim and Imation discs, but I can't get it to read my SVCD's even though it claims it will.

This a correction to my prior review. I had tried readinfg a dual-layer dvd, (Verbatim DVD+R DL) and it appeard to be fine. I then wrote to previous review. I had not played the disc all the way through. When I tried, I found it ONLY READ THE FIRST LAYER. When the disc got to the second layer information, the player skipped, froze and generally would not real the Dual Layer. For all other media, I find this to be an excellent player, but for DL playing, it is worthless.

This has played everything I have thrown at it to date. It is advertised to play some of the formats I don't use such as DVD-R/RW

Needed a DVD/VCR Combo that also plays VCDs. Tried numerous Panasonics, with no luck. This Sony was highly rated along with Toshiba. Have tried playing VCDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, DVD-Rs and VHS tapes. All play just fine. However, experienced skipping on some VCD 1.1 discs. Not sure if they were disc problems. This is a pricey comvo, compared to the others. The chasis cosmetically looks much better than the Panasonics though.
