| The Dolby Digital and DTS output did not work with optical video cable. Tinkered for hours to get it to operate. No luck. I returned my model to Costco (greatest return policy on Earth) and got another one. Guess what? Same problem! Returned it for a Toshiba V-391 and DD/DTS worked immediately (and for $40 less)! |

| This started out as an excellent dvd player was playing everything I thru at it but then it slowly started to skip and freeze on all my dvd's rented or otherwise. I cleaned the laser eye but did not help I took it back. I would not recommend this dvd player for anyone who plays a lot of dvd's I play 3 dvd's every weekend and 1 or 2 during the week. |

| I cannot play "Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas". I have the Collector's Edition Widescreen version. Soon after starting the sound goes out. If I hit stop and start the closed captioning goes on. I didn't really think too much about it but then it happened on Bionicle The Mask of Light. I searched the Internet and spoke with someone from Sony. I could send it in to Sony. I swapped the unit out with another from Best Buy and very soon after starting the sound has gone out. I hit stop and play and the closed captioning came on still without sound. I guess it's time for a refund. I wonder if the SLV-D500P has the same issue. The only difference I think is VCR-Plus+ |

Very nice unit, got it at Sears for 39.99 due to a screwup in their advertising papers.
So far no problems at all, plays everything just fine. The only complaint is that the remote isn't very user friendly. All the buttons are clunked together and it's hard to make guess presses in the dark. |

| This will hopefully be helpful to anyone who has this picky piece of equipment. Bought it because it was a vcr/dvd combo that was suppose to play all video formats. I have tried only rented dvd's and burned dvd-r and dvd-wr. The player has skipped before on rented dvds. My burned movies sometimes would skip but in small bursts. Like the people were moving in the presence of a strobe light. To help this problem I found that if I burned at a slow speed like 1x it helped. Also using Nero Vision Express I found that when you burn select the automatic setting. This helped also. I don't think I would buy this again, but it was the only player combo that was suppose to play all formats. I think sony knows there is a problem with this player because they already have a nearly identicle product out, the slvd500p. Have not heard any bad things about this one yet. |

Player is great. The picture is perfect with a dvd. Only played a few vhs tapes; the picture wasn't all that great, but then again comparing it to a dvd isn't fair. Have it hooked up to a Sony WEGA HDTV 32" and lovin' it.
Have a TDK 440N burner on my computer and DVD-R and +R works without a problem. Picture's great and sound is perfect. Haven't tried any other types of media yet. The brands that I've used and work great have been: CompUSA DVD-R, Sony DVD+R and Kyphermedia DVD+R.

| It plays SVCDs and DVD+Rs and that is all I need it to play. I'm using FujiFilm 4X DVD+Rs which actually burns at 8X. I have a 8X Plextor DVD +/- RW and it burns great. My only problem with dvd/vcr combo is when it's playing a DVD, it makes an annoying loud noise. I would expect it to play the DVD quietly but it doesn't which pisses me off because if I want to watch a DVD on low volume, I end up hearing the DVD drive spinning more then the sound from the movie. I don't know if anybody else had this problem. If you do, let me know. |

| Rental DVDs and DVD-Rs freeze and pixelate. Labeling a disk appears to raise the failure rate 10-fold. So far... 6 or 6 Imation labeled backups have failed. 3 of 4 TDK backups with labels have failed. 1 of 4 TDK not labeled have failed. I know sticking the labels on the disk appears to be a problem, but disks work perfectly in other players. Also rental disks (through the mail) are beginning to freeze. Unit never had problems in the first 3-months. |

This unit is sold in Warehouse stores (e.g., Costco) under the model number Sony SLV-D201P.
I could not find ANY information on the internet about that model number and called Sony. They confirmed that the SLV-D201P is merely the SLV-D300P sold with a different model number. The price was $160. |

I just spent 2 hours testing 18 custom dvds on this player . . .
dvd-r - most burned with mac/iDVD/FCE or iMovie
worked fine:
2 maxell
2 memorex
4 cheapo (ridata, etc.)
failed (stutter, lock-up, etc):
1 imation
4 memorex
5 cheapo
here's the deal, though . . .
i suspect this box is extremely sensitive to disc labels, 7 out of 8 of the good ones were unlabeled;
All but one of the failed had labels.
I am extremely frustrated with the state of this art . . . encoders, decoders, labels, media, players, contradictory reports on the net . . . the only player i've found that works great is my PlayStation 2!!
Good luck!!
This box is going back in the hole! (where the cockroaches and Saddams dwell) |

The unit played DVD+R and DVD+RW and also had a nice viewing feature for jpg files.
The problem is that this product has manufacturing flaws. I bought mine at Best Buy. By the second day it wouldn't play Blockbuster DVDs; the picture would keep freezing. We exchanged it for a new unit and in three days, the eject button stopped working, which was a real problem because we couldn't get a Blockbuster DVD out of it. Eventually it worked but it would sieze more often than not.
I was sick of this unit and ready for a refund, but because there are not many options for what I wanted I decided to exchange it one more time. Best Buy said they had 4 more in inventory. Turned out all 4 were defects going back to their distributor.

Been using Maxell DVD + and - RW DVDs and they work great. Not a stutter. Using a Pioneer 106d/A06 burner and using DVD X Copy. Love the player!!! Only gave a 9 so far because I haven't had the chance to play with the other features or try other medias.
Let me know if you know of a media that will work on this player, burnt with the A06/106d burner, and DVD X Copy- that I can buy in bulk or is at least cheap, the Maxell's are expensive. |

| I love the unit but I have already had problems with store purchased DVDs. It plays home burned DVDs but has problems with store bought "Grass" and HBO's "Sex in the City." It wouldn't play "Grass" at all and froze 1/2 way through one episode of SITC. These same DVDs worked in other (cheaper) DVD players. I even exchanged the unit, same problems. It is going back. |

OK, I posted earlier about this player and rated it much higher. But now Im going to NOT recommend it based on the fact that it doesn't play my DVD-R(TDK 2x)and DVD+RW(DVD-ON) discs reliably. It started out playing them fine but now they often freeze up. I know its not the discs becuase they play good in my other DVD player. Maybe its sensitve to the media types or something. Im returning it.
Note: The VCR still works great and it still plays regular Movie DVD's and VCD. |

This is my third DVD-VHS combo unit I've tried.
First 2 were Samsung 2500 and Samsung 3500.
My number one criteria is for the unit to be able to play home made DVD's. I've used Optodisk and Princo as my media. Nero 5.5.10.35 was used to record on Sony 500ax or Pionear A03. The only unit that was able to play these DVD's was Samsung 2500. The other 2 played fine the first day, then started to pixelate and would stop somewere in the middle of the disk. I was very much surprised that the newer models could not handle this medea. Maybe they are Ok with the other type of medea such as TDK or Sony. I ended up keeping Samsung 2500 which is also a Multisystem player (just the DVD part not the VHS)
DVD-RW playback is problematic though.
Good luck |

Played DVD+RW(Cheap DVD-On), DVD-R(TDK 2x), VCD, SVCD, VHS.
Can also do CD-JPEG, and Play S-VHS but not record S-VHS. Rewinds T-120 tapes in 60sec. Can record non-copyrighted VCD/DVD to VHS if you "Y-loop" the composite out to composite Line 1 In.
I did not play a DivX(mpeg4) data file I burned to a CDR |

So far this player does what is claimed. I have tried CDR, VCD, SVCD, and VHS. No problems. I will try DVD.. when I get my burner. It won't record DVD to VHS unless you loop the composite OUT to the composite IN on the back of the player. This isn't a problem since this thing has all kinds of IN/OUT jacks. Not sure if the Macrovision can be hacked.
Has hundreds of slick options; DVD progressive scan, Dolby/DTS pass through, several VHS recording features.... Has an easy and simple to use set-up menu. Rewinds tapes extremely fast. Also plays DATA-CD as in JPEGS. I got it at Best Buy for $199. |

The first unit I brought home played my DVD-R's and my CDR VCD's but after a few days it quit. I thought it was incompatable and took it back. I liked the VCR that came with it so much that I thought it may have been a bad unit so I bought another. I have a lot of old VCR tapes.
It plays all my DVD-R's and the VCD's I burn.
The VCR has a 30 second commercial skip button, and an 8 second rewind. I have a TiVo and am use to both of those features and am glad to see them on this VCR. If you press either button multiple time it will remember how many times you pressed it and go back or forward by that number of times. For example if you come to a commercial you can hit the skip buttom 6 times and it will fast forward 3 minutes. It also has an index search to find the begining of each show you record which is real handy.
Out of the box I hooked up the antenna and output to the TV then plugged in the power and it programmed itself. It found all my cable channels and set the clock.
I know you guys are interested in the DVD functions. It seems to do it all like its predecessor the Sony SLV-D100 and has progressive scan. |
