SVCD works fine on a imation CDR and verbatim CDRW. I have not tested any other format. There was an audio out of sync problem on my test svcd, but after pausing it for a second, problem went away and it played fine till the end of movie. SVCD on my 27 inch TV was looking as good as a DVD. Audio quality and DVD video quality is much better than my 3 year old toshiba sd3109.

I was confused by the listing of JPG support with this unit. I contacted the live chat of SONY tech support and he confirmed that NO SONY DVD Players including this one support JPG playback:

Max: Hi, my name is Max. How may I help you?
You: Hi, can you tell me if the Sony SLV-D100 supports JPG playback from a CD recorded on a computer?
You: Hello?
Max: No, the SLV-D100 does not support JPEG playback from a CD.
You: Oh, OK
You: Does SONY offer any DVD players that have this feature?
Max: No, none of the DVD players have this feature.
You: Thanks

Have tried TDK DVD-R disks burned on my PC with Studio8 and they all have worked perfectly. These same disks have only been succesful 50% of the time when used with my Toshiba Sd5700. So far this Sony has been great for me.

So far so good.
It plays VCD and SVCD fine, as well as different brands of DVD+R and +RW (I tried Verbatim, Memorex, and Meritline)

Has played all DVD-R disks I burned with Pinnacle Studio 8 on my PC. Using a Matshita DVD-R /-RW drive. All menus work as well as all chapters. These disks (Imation disks) work with all of this players functions and features. I placed the same disks in my Toshiba Sd5700 and only 1 works completely. All others have a problem with the menu, which does not work.

Recorded with NEC ND1100A

Did not play SVCD with menus.
Played SVCD without menus.

Did not play DVD+R (tried Maxell and Memorex).
Used Nero and DVDXCopy.

The panasonic DVD-RV30 played the same DVD+Rs perfectly.

Bitsetting was not allowed on NEC ND1100A.

While all the previous reports sounded good, and the data looks fine, when I tried to play a DVD-R, produced with a Pioneer DVR-A05 at X4 Speed, it does not recognize the media. Subject media plays fine on other systems I tested. Had great hopes for this Sony as it touts all the features but they do not appear to work with the newer products.

DVD+RW worked - - no problem. Encode w/ Canopus Procoder and burned via ULEAD DVD Movie Factory. The document does state that DVD-RW is not supported... I have not verified.

Just bought this player today after reading and comparing the posts about different combo players. So far, it has played DVD-Rs (Verbatim and Sony)burnt with Sonic MyDvd, DVD+Rs (Verbatim) burnt with Sonic MyDvd, VCD (FujuFilm) burnt with Sonic MyDvd, and SVCDs (FujuFilm and CD-R made by Durabrand) burnt using Nero, the latest version. I use a Sony DRX500UL burner.

I burnt a small cartoon to test the SVCD function. For the first disc, I used a FujuFilm disc and burnt at 16X with Nero. It played beautifully! The second disc was a very cheap CD-R by Durabrand burnt at 4X, also using Nero. It also played fantastic, in fact, it may be my imagination, but I think it actually looked better than the first one!

The only thing I don't like about this player so far is that I have to manually change the TV channels before and after using it. I have had players before, and I have never had to do this after the channel was set, which it has been, and verified. Oh well, small price to pay for a player that plays the discs this one does! Maybe I can find a "cure" for my channel problem.

If I get any further information about this player in the future, I will post.

My long search for a decent dvd / vhs combo has finally came to an end. I have bought and returned over 4 of these combo units. It seems that as soon as you find one you like, it doesnt play SVCD, or it doesnt let you copy VCD/SVCD to VHS. It seems the higher in price you go the less is the combo units are able to play.

VCD is a little choppy, especially on large TVs. Of course that is due to the low resolution of VCDs. I have tried just about all cd-r and cd-rw media and all so far have worked (except for the VCD issue).

The greatest featur is that when you do record a SVCD to VHS, you can do it with such little loss of quality. I would suggest this to anyone looking for a full function dvd/vhs player. As always with mid range sony products the remote are less then medeoker (Spelled inccorect). Good luck in the hunt for the perfect DVD player. That would be one that wacks it for me during the movie? LOL. email me at Methogod@aol.com if you need some information or just want to talk about movies.

Thank you for contacting us with your query regarding the SLV-D100.

The SLV D100 is compatible with DVD/DVD-R/RW(Video Mode)CD/VCD/CD-R/CD-RW and MP3 Playback and not with DVD+RW mode.

If someone can verify the _compatibility_ of "+RW" or "+R", please share. There are
