Excellent series of machines, one of the few
with 16x9 DVD code.

RGB scart input and YUV output can't be used
simultaneoulsy.

A pity you can't dub Jpegs and MP3's to the HDD,
but overall a very good feature set, great picture
quality even at 2.5 hours / disc and
the operating system is almost fun and that's saying a lot for DVD recorders.

Hello,

I have this Sony RD-HX910 and I have this question:

What's about the chapters ?
I can't transfer any titles with manual chapters.
The titles with manual chapters are on my HD but when I do/dub a DVD-R all my chapter disappeared.

Why ? Any ideas ?

I read the manual and it seems isn't possible to have them on DVD-R.
It is a bug or just my old version of firmware ? And where to see my firmware version ?

Comments:
Very easy to use, manual rarely needed as yet other than for setting the scart input up.

Layer change on playback is very clumsy - noticeable pause and display of icons on screen as it switches.

Picture Quality is superb on progressive, visually much better / smoother / filmlike than my Pioneer 676.

Harddisk is a monstrous size and HQ+ quality superb (and not needed as standard HQ is also very very good) 50+ hours capacity (I must get a life)

Dubbing to DVD media from HDD is simple to setup but downconversion from one format to another is slow. Just tried 4 eps of the Simpsons captured at 1.5gb each onto a DVD-R - total time to convert and dub = 1 hr 17m. No prob - just wander off and have a coffee and read the paper.
Downconversion is stepped to fixed compression levels - the 4 episodes I mentioned above were recompressed from HQ to HSP (1.5gb to 1gb) there is no sliding scale that maximise use of the DVD - in this case I ended up with 1/2 gig+ spare on the DVD that could have been used if it had more variable compression parameters.

A big bonus is the up sampling of input signals to component video outputs - very useful here in NZ where the best SKY output is RGB scart and my TV has only component inputs.

Chasing play, pause TV, record to HDD and watch another DVD or something else recorded to HDD all work very well.

Remote is OK, but not illuminated and the record button is hidden behind a sliding panel - stops accidental activation I suppose.

All in All very happy, some minor quibbles (and they really are minor) 9/10. It works as you expect it should - very intuitive. The dropped point is for the layer change which will stop me using it as my main playback machine and the lack of variable compression.

Comments:
I got this DVD recorder today, and it seems it has great features. I should still test.

But one thing is very annoying; all of my homemade DVD-R which are perfectly readable on other devices just play with lots of "jerk" every second. It's just unviewable. Strangely; previous models of Sony RDR can perfectly read the *same* DVD... So it looks like firmware problem or something.

Does anyone experienced the same problem ? I will inform my resseller about this fact.

Always a problem when you buy a model which is *so* recent.
