well, Im back. The first to leave a review and comment on this machine. It worked PERFECT for two years. Two years, I have 3 full cd cases of perfectly working DVD's, nearly a recorded dvd every weekend.

Then it happened. Stopped working well. System overheated Im guessing and every blank or recrded disc was a disc error. Couldnt even play dvd movies without it stopping.

weirdest and most annoying is the "finalizing" for 10 min, then turning off and saying "welcome", then finalizing for 10 more min and it would start all over until I unplugged it. Spend $120 for Sony to replair it and it's still not the same.

Very disapointed :( those 2 years were great :)

Onto Dual Layered Recorders...

I fell in love with the machine when I first bought it about a year ago. Then out of the blue, it quit reading its own dvd-rw and dvd+rw discs. It will format and record them just fine. It will do everything it is supposed to until you remove it and try to play it back later. Then you get a "Cannot play this disc" error. Sony says to keep trying different discs or take it to a repair shop 75 miles away which will cost more than I paid for it originally. I'm getting rid of all my Sony products.

This model is getting a bum steer as far as ratings. I owned 2 Panasonics. E-20 and E-80. Both made discs that would pixellize at some point and freeze when played on the recorder or any of my 3 other players. Of course both were returned.

I then purchased the Sony, which was over a year ago. I never had a single problem with it! The picture quality is by far better than the Panasonics. Recordings made utilizing the 1-2 hour modes look just as good as the originals; sometimes a little better because of filtering. The 3 hour mode is also very good. The 4-6 hour modes are good but I usually don’t record for longer than 2.5 hours. I heard the JVC’s do a real good job on 4+ hour recordings but they do not support all formats.

The issue others are having with +/-RW discs is not an issue. If you format a fresh disc with the recorder and then transfer it to the computer and save the contents to your PC , the disc does not get altered in any way and you are able to reuse over and over. The folks who are having problems are using discs that have been formatted on the computer are have been altered on the computer. All you have to do is erase the disc on the computer (using the same software) and reformat with the recorder.

I could not be happier with this recorder. It is very easy to use and the instructions are easy to follow. I use it to capture satellite and transfer VHS to DVD. It does a much better job than capturing with a PC. I have a couple of ATI All-In-Wonder cards and I have tried several other internal and external capture devices including ADS, Pinnacle, and Canopus. Two of them cost over $500.00. The picture quality of the Sony blew them all away. I just record on RW, transfer disc to PC, edit on the PC, and burn with the PC.

This model has been replaced with the RDR-GX315 which supports dual layer discs. IT IS NOT AS GOOD!!! If you can find the RDR-GX300, buy it. It is made like the old Sony stuff; heavy, metal case, quality chips, and mechanisms. Don’t buy the new model. It’s not what I would call a true Sony. It’s just like their piece of junk DVD/VHS combo player units. Pure junk. Sony uses the same inferior chips and other mechanisms that are used in the cheapo’s and no-name brands. Trust me. I have tried multiples of every Sony combo player (6 units) and most of the other brands. It’s too bad Sony has started down that path. I guess all of the manufacturers have. I am a perfectionist when it comes to quality and I am not one who buys something just for the name.

I hope this helps those who may be considering this unit because the ratings on this website are not accurate. It should be one of the top 5 models. I’m sure there are other recorders that do certain things better than the RDR-GX300, but compared (first hand) to the Panasonics and others brands my friends own, my Sony edges out in terms of image quality and ease of use.

I am just starting out to use the recorder. Here is whatI initially found. +RW disks that were previously recorded and erased (now blank) on my PC DVD drive would not load or be recognized. I kept getting a message that the disks were unrecordable or there was a media error. New never used +RW disks worked perfectly, however if I used my PC DVD to erase them, they would not work. Wolla!!! a solution.
If you take a new +RW disk and formate it in the Sony recorder then take it to your computer DVD drive and disk copy it to other erased +RW DVDs, the other erased DVDs are now recognized and are usable by the Sony recorder. Must have something to do with the way Sony ID's and recognizes the disks. I will keep you posted on other things that I discover. I use NERO software in my computer.

In terms of picture quality I cannot fault the recorder. I have sometimes had problems recording programmes with the PDC function set - the recorder seems to start at the correct time but then shuts off after a couple of minutes.

Also, why does the machine take so long to respond when loading a disc. This is frustrating.

I can echo comments of happy lucky small chestnut. I now have 5 Phillips DVD+RW coasters. Problem started after I had the recorder for about a year. The most annoying thing about it is they play on my newer Liteon 5026 (1 month old) but can't reformat the discs to reuse them. They lock up my PC when I try to view them in Windows explorer. I've tried using a lens cleaner but to no avail.
One other niggle is when I power on the unit and load a DVD and wait for a TV program to start the unit automatically powers off after about a minute. I then have to power up again (and wait for the disc toload)
I've always bought Panasonic in the past but didn't fancy a DVD Ram recorder so I bought this Sony and have to say I am disappointed with what I thought was a top brand.
I also own a Humax Freeview/HDD recorder with Electronic Program Guide which has proved far superior to the Sony.

I love the time shift, or chasing playback feature of this unit. You need to use DVD-RW for this feature, and format in the strange DVD-VR format. However, I've lost a few recording when it starts to reject disks with the "disk format error", or "disk is dirty". I have had the unit lock up where I am unable to eject the disk. I have to toggle the power, and even then it takes a while to open. And because it's in the DVD-VR format, I can't get the video files from the disk on my PC or Linux boxes. Those files are toast.

I have had it for almost a year, and it seems to be acting more and more flaky. Luckily I got the extended warrentee (Highly recommended if you get this unit), so I can get it checked out. I love the features, but hate the hastles. My wife hates the box.. it's very slow to load. If you want to pop in a disk to record something fast, be ready to miss the first several minutes.

I have a big grumble with this unit.

Although it provides A/B editing, it is not frame accurate. It will only edit to the nearest second. So when editing out commercials, I sometimes end up with up to 1/2 second of commercial that I can't edit out.

GRRRRR.

I prefered the editing on the Philips 985 much better.

I do not see why you would want to hack this recorder, since it does not play Pal movies to NTSC format.
I have tried to play a Pal zone free DVD film and it does not play. The same movie played on my LG region 1 player, also with my Pioneer region 1 player. But NOT on my Sony Gx300. I believe it does not Convert Pal to NTSC.

Work perfectly! No coasters. Preferred media is 2x DVD-RW (Optodisck001=Eworks from FutureShop or OPTODISCW002 from E-Bay) for the editing features. Can read any DVD-ROM and even 'shrinked' on DVD-R. Must follow pages 8-9 of user manual as it support only some medias (record on DVD±R up to 8x, DVD+RW up to 4x and DVD-RW at 2x but 8cm like Verbatim's "Digital Movie miniDVD-RW" can only be read).
Works better than my VHS to record my favorite programs and can be zapped (A-B erase) to create commercial free archive (at 75¢ for 6hrs and less space on the shelf, why not!).
On special at Brick for less than a Super-VHS and DVD combo. If you need more recording space, check out the HX-900 with a built-in 160GB drive). BTW, time clock is auto-set on any PBS station AFTER power-off.

Well, I began the comments on this model and after 5 months I have gone 30 for 30 DVD's! Not one coaster, not one error! Nothing wrong! The 1 and 2 hour modes look better than broadcast feed and this system is still great! I have yet to have a problem and my DVD's play great on other systems as well!
I have recorded from VHS tapes as well and those have came out great!
Since this is my 1st recorder, I cant say there are non better, so I up my 8 to a 9, but leave the 10 incase there's something that just cant be beat! This system could be beat if it would take dual layered DVD's, but since those are expensive and I cant buy them very many places it doesnt really matter to me!

Worked well with Verbatim DVD-R for a week then the machine seemed to break down unable to recognise any disc put into the drive, "DISC ERROR" message appeared each time. Did not work when JVC DVD-RW was inserted. Very dissapointed with brand name like Sony that worked only for a week. Now I have to figure out how to bring back to Singapore for exchange as the recorder is in Malaysia.

I have converted all of my home videos from VHS to the DVD-R format. This player is easy to operate and has a nice interface menu.

One major drawback that I have experienced is the fact that the auto clock set only seemed to work when the recorder was initially setup. Overt the course of a few weeks, the clock display time was out by 14 minutes ....I called Sony customer support about this issue and they indicated that this is a "known issue" and the "Sony Japan" is working on a solution to this addressing this problem.

If you ask me, this is a BIG problem, especially if you are going to use your DVD recorder as a time shift recorder for recording timer recordings from satellite of TV broadcast...how can you use timer recorder if the clock will not keep accurate time ?

Other than this, the recorder records a great picture and is dual R/RW -/+ format so either DVD blank media will work in it.

I am wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this same issue.

I have a different Sony model, but having read the manual to this one, this applies:

If you are using –r/-rw media, you have to “finalize” the disk before you can play it anywhere else. Once you do that, should be no problem.

I often record on –rw, finalize, copy the disk to my PC hard drive, then archive on –r or +r. The results play everywhere.

After finalizing a –rw disk, you can use it again after reformatting it; you must reformat in the Sony set top. If you format on a computer, you get a ‘can’t use this disk’ message…not actually true, format on the set top and it works.

Finalizing takes a few minutes; so does formating. Plan on it.

+rw media allows for erase and does not require reformating...there is an info-write cycle on eject after writing, but automatic and not as time consuming as finalizing.

From ‘tools’ on the remote, go to disc information and proceed.

A note on manuals, Crutchfield (www.crutchfield.com) has this manual and many others downloadable in pdf format.

I originally purchased a Toshiba DVD Recorder but then one month after I bought it on the last day the Sony RDRGX300 went on sale for the same price so I brought back the Toshiba and bought the Sony because the difference was the Sony played and burned +RW. There is however one problem I have been having and not sure how to fix. Once I've recorded the DVD it seems that when I put the DVD into my DVD rom, my DVD burner on my computer AND my DVD rom on my laptop NONE of them can read it. But then when I put it back into the Sony it reads no problem. Can anyone out there PLEASE tell how I can fix this problem. I wish to record stuff and then copy it a few times for friends. Thanks for any advice. Feel free to email me at Dalton_Michaels@hotmail.com. Thank you.

I just started playing with my new RDR-GX300 this evening. The setup wizard is very nice. It seems like for the fullest functionality, you need to use DVD-RW media. Some features are not availabe with DVD+RW (which is annoying, since I got this unit when my Philips 985, which took only + media died). In particular, it seems that to manually add chapter marks, you need -RW media. You can, however edit on either.

This unit does not have firewire or component inputs. Not a problem for me, since I do my camcorder editing on a computer, but something to be aware of.

I tried to play a DVD-R disk that was mastered on the Philips on a +RW (and them copied to -R media on the computer) and I noticed some stuttering in the playback. I just noticed it on one disk...I need to try some more to determine if it is a problem with just that disk, the brand of disks or my mastering schme.

I like the ability to easily change the recording speed (as compared to the Phillips) (and it automatically sets a lower speed if you tell it to record a program and there is not enough capacity on the disk using the current speed).

When I recorded on VHS, TDK's HDX-PRO was the only way I went! The highest quality vhs tape that was out there bar none! Now, since august 2004, they are phasing them out and you can only get them online. So DVD recorder didnt only seem like the next best thing, it sounded better. Just what to get? Well I got this sony and I know Ive only recorded 1 thing in 2 hr mode(but tested out every other), it looks fantastic and better than the best of VHS'! Recording was a cinch(I used sony DVD+R), playback is fine, even in my ps2. The picture quality looked exactly like the one I was watching when recording. In the 4hr and 6 hr modes, there is notible loss in picture quality, but whats $1 per DVD compared to what was $8-$10 per TDK VHS tapes?
