This machine was fairly good at playback. Recording, however, is parlous. Sure you can record 4:3 in most modes. But it will only record 16:9 in Sony's pseudo proprietry VR mode, making the discs next to useless in other machines including computer DVDs.
To claim that by going through numerous steps with Adobe Premiere you can convert the VR file to a useable mpeg is spurious. People buy DVD recorders to record the programs and material they want with EASE and COMPATABILITY.
Having struggled with this unfortunate beast for a week, it is being returned to the store (with their agreement).
I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT YOU LOOK ELSEWHERE IF YOU WANT 16:9 COMPATABILITY. |

Following on from my previous comments I also have the following issues:-
The external cooling fan is excessively loud and is very obvious if the sound volume levels are low.
The quality of recording in any less than SP mode is worse than VHS which doesnt seem like progress or what you would expect from DVD.
The i-link facility is very erratic and regularly looses connection, the inbuilt software is very basic and just really copies to content directly onto the DVD without any additional features to create an edited movie.
Now I have listed all the issues I think overall this is a really poor effort from Sony and not what you would expect them to produce. |

I was sold this as a cheaper direct replacement for the 300, when it is not.
This is my first DVD recorder and I was a little disappointed.
Firstly, there is no time slip function or record one program whilst watching another feature as Sony saved money and only put in one laser.
The start up time seems excessive, if you want to record something that has just started it seems to take ages to boot up, around 10x longer than my 6 year old video which doesnt seem like progress.
The picture output quality from even pre-recorded DVD's is far inferior to my old Toshiba SD220 DVD player, the picture has a dark shadow along the top in line with where the black current status icon is on the right hand side. On some movies the titles cast a shadow across the screen (a bit like ghosting) and on very quiet parts of a film you can hear another TV program in the background which is annoying.
I have now sent this back for repair, but I know they will say they cant find anything wrong & send it back because it is working but it is not to the standard I expect.
I wish I had researched this purchase more and not just listened to what the salesman told me as quite often they know less about the products than the customers.

This machine looks good on paper, but I have to say I'm very disappointed with the results.
The picture quality at SP on TV recordings is acceptable, but any less and it's not worth it, you may as well stick with good quality VHS. It's better from a non-broadcast source, but still not as sharp as I was hoping for.
However, the most annoying thing is a problem with sound/picture sync. After about 30 minutes continous recording, the sound and picture drift out of sync, and it gets worse over longer recording durations, making it very difficult to concentrate.
I'm not sure if this is a problem unique to my machine, or if it's a fault experienced by others. It'd be interesting to know... |

This is just an excellent recorder, it records a lot of media (tried Memorex DVD+RW, TDK DVD+R, Fuji DVD-RW) all excellent image quality, no coasters. DVD+R(W) seems faster to work with though (and cheaper)
About wide screen (16:9) recording:
I connected my JVC DV camera to the i-link input, and captured some 16:9 footage (anamorphic squeeze mode) to a DVD-RW (this is the only media able to record 16:9 see manual).
The captured image quality (HQ or SP mode) is excellent, it clearly shows me the poor quality of my camera lens ;-)
It plays back nicely on the recorder itself in 16:9.
After this i finalised the disc (important) and put it in my Laptop. I copied one of the files (VR_MOVIE.VRO) to the harddrive, renamed it to TEST.MPG and imported it in Adobe Premiere. Premiere loads it without problems but thinks it is 4:3!
By using the adobe premiere function "interpret footage" (click-right in the project window) it is easy to change it back to 16:9 and edit the movie in 16:9.
A standalone DVD recorder like this one is a great tool for the DV camera user like me.
Just shoot footage, record it to DVD recordable while relaxing on the couch, copy the disc to the computer (much faster/smaller filesize compared to DV capture) and edit the movie directly in MPEG2.

After some more testing, I now have to revise my earlier comment that 'it works'. It has subsequently become apparent that either a large batch or possibly all of the machines of this model have a fault, in that they do not handle RGB correctly. Whether the machine is on or in stand-by, when an RGB signal goes into line 3 (eg. from a Sky or Freeview box), the signal coming out of the line 1 (to the TV) is degraded to what looks like composite video quality. Naturally, when you record, the playback is also subject to the same degradation. Sony are working on this, but as I understand it they do not have a fix at present. There's quite a bit of discussion about this problem in on-line forums (AV forum, Digital Spy...).

Firstly: it works. That may seem an odd thing to say, but I used to have a JVC DRM10! - say no more. This one does seem to do exactly what it says on the tin. Furthermore, everything works in a very straightforward way, with minimal effort in setting it up. The menus are very intuitive.
The video and sound outputs seem fine for DVD-RWs (even if recorded on another make of machine) and for commercial DVDs. When it comes to stills it seems to be able to read much bigger jpeg files than some other models, which is a good thing in view of the expanding CCDs of digital still cameras these days. It doesn't have an SD card slot (this seems to be a panasonic-only feature at the moment).
Where this machine does shine, for an entry level DVD recorder, is in its connectivity. As well as the usual SCART in (RGB enabled) and SCART out (also RGB; can also accept a signal in, but only composite video), it has standard 'phono' video jacks, S-video and i.link into the front panel, standard video input jacks also on the back (great for that tired old VHS video recorder), and component video output with progressive scan for great picture and sound from commercial DVDs.
So, altogether a competent machine, if not an exciting one. It seems we will have to wait a bit longer for Sony's 'Intelligent Chaptering'; this model does not have it. There isn't a hard disk here, but personally I prefer to have a hard disk in a freeview box and then just back up stuff that I want to keep on a DVD recorder, so I don't need or want one on this machine. One day, of course, all of these machines will have digital free-to-view tuners inside. At the moment, though, the Sony RDR GX500, which is great from this point of view, has no progressive scan output and the strong disadvantage of no i.link, which is hopeless for us digital video camera owners.
A few minor gripes. Firstly, according to the manual this machine can only record in 16:9 widescreen format if you use DVD-RW discs in VR mode. This doesn't actually seem to be true: I tried using DVD-RW disks in video mode and they recorded a widescreen programme without any problem (although I haven't tested to see whether it would do aspect ratio switching appropriately, as I am using the component video output which does not carry this signal). So maybe it isn't true for any of the other disk types either.
Secondly, and this is a real error on Sony's part, this machine cannot be set to start recording automatically when an external source switches on. Most DVD recorders these days seem to have this facility, and it is very valuable if you mainly use a freeview or Sky box. I haven't fiddled about trying to set the timer of a DVD recorder for ages. It is much easier to rely on the EPG in the freeview box.
Thirdly, there is not much flexibility in the duration of the DVD recording time. Other models now often have a flexible trade-off between time and quality between 2 and 4 hours. With this machine, if a film is a bit over 2 hours long, you'll have to set the DVD duration to 4 hours, with considerable loss of quality. That's a pity.
Finally, when will other companies catch up with JVC's idea of a 'Navigation Library', where the DVD recorder numbers all recorded DVDs consecutively and remembers everything that has been recorded on them. This facility cannot be very hard to program into a new machine, and it is extremely convenient. Unlike most things on the JVC DRM10, this facility works, and works really well.
Apart from these points, the Sony is not a bad little machine for the money.
