I've owned this unit for years now and continue to be impressed with it's quality in conjuction with (IMHO) a very high end audio and HT system. There is a highly respected company that offers upgrades to only the primo A/V equipment and they included the 9000 in that group. I am saving my pennys now to have this done. Thought other users may be interested. ModWright

For those of you that unable to make this player plays CD-R, try this media: CD-R PRO from Maxell. (from staples and some walmart stores.

So far (despite other reports) mine will not play CD-R media -- only CD-RW. All DVD+R and DVD+RW tests I've done work well, across a wide range of media brands. It will play VCDs if I record them to CD+RW media -- no luck with SVCDs.

Owned this nice player for 3 years, bought it region free.
Plays every DVD I've tried (over 500)

Plextor CD-R and Verbatim CD-RW plays perfect, burned in Plextor burner at 4x + VariRec (important !)

High-End class redbook performance via Digital Out.
Perfect SACD 2-channel support.

No MP3 support... but who cares, this is a Near High-End player.

it is truly one of the best DVD and SACD players on the market. it will not play cd-r or cd rw in any format though. elegant sleek and sounds great. not for the tame of heart or the tame wallet.

Did not succeed in having that player play CD-Rs.
But i have no problems playing Memorex 700MB CD-RWs.

On the video side, the 9000es does not want to play SVCDs but the VCD header trick worked fine.

Per the suggestion by another user, I used a memorex dvd+r/rw writer, and I tried a memorex dvd+rw just in case. I burned a copy of Rounders which is a single layer disc using dvdDecryptor in iso mode. I wrote the disc using DVDDecryptor using iso write mode at "MAX" setting. I have the menu, and no choppy video and the audio is perfectly in synch. In fact the dvd went in and started playing right away. I am going to try a dual layer disc using dvd2one and see if all goes as well. I'll repost my findings.

I am curious to know if anyone has gotten a good cd-r routine that works on this player.

Comments:
As a dvd player for playing studio-made dvds in progressive scan, this player is superb. I am adding this comment simply because no other review has discussed its use with dvd+r media. I have burned 7 dvd+r disks using Memorex media and either Ulead Workshop or Sonic My DVD software, and it plays them all. It works perfectly with menus as well. I haven't burned a dvd+rw disk yet, so I don't know if it will play them.
I have found that it is very picky on vcds though. It will play some and not others, with no rhyme or reason -- as to burning speed, media used, etc. I have a Pioneer 444 which I use to watch vcd and svcd disks just for that purpose, but if something will play on this Sony, it is unbeatable in quality.

Comments:
I've had this DVD player for over a year. This is the best DVD player I've come across thus far. I've successfully burned VCD, SVCD, and XVCD and played them on this player.

I was alittle skeptical about reports of not being about to read SVCD -- boy was I surpised when my SVCD worked like a charm in it.

I use 12x compatible k-Hypermdeia 80min/700mb disks (silver) and able to burn at 8x with no problems for VCD, SVCD and XVCD.

Not only that this DVD delivers the best sound quality of any DVD player on the market -- even after over a year.

If you can afford to clunk down $1000+. This is the player to buy.

Comments:
Bought this player since it just came out about 2 years ago. I'd have to agree with most 9000ES owners out there that this baby is an excellent player based on its on what it was intended for: Top notch Video-Audio quality; audio from CD's is on par with other 2 or 3 times the price, i.e. Meridian, Cal Audio Lab, etc. Was quite disappointed when someone said it would not play dvd-r some time ago. Quality aside, I just like to inform all 9000ES owners a GOOD news: it plays both dvd-r (generic dvd-r's too) and dvd-rw. I was so estatic last night when I finished burning my 2nd home video on a Pioneer dvd-rw blank. I put in the tray not expecting it to play at all, since nobody reported it did. But voila, it played just like it does a regular pre-recorded dvd video. Sorry for a long note, but I couldn't help it. The 9000ES will be in my rack for quite a long time to come. Thanks for your patience. Cheers.

One reviewer in the UK said - "If God owned a DVD player this would be it". I can't really add to that comment. It looks gorgeous and the pictures and sound are sumptuous.

EXCELENT!! I just bought one, and I love it! The only down side is that it does not play all types of CDR discs.. But most dont't! I think that it is the BEST DVD PLayer you will find on the market!

Excelent sound on CD's. Also on SACD, but hard
to find well recorded SACD's. It will play Sony
CD-R's (Supremas only), and PRINCO CDR-74
(Silver), IF you record at the lowest possible speed.
It wiil play CD-RW from Verbatim DataLifePlus. I
use Roxio-Toast as software and the Piliphs
Ominiwriter 26 and Sony Spressa i.Link
CRX1600L as hardware on a Macintosh G4.

I made an XVCD with NERO and it plays but the audio is not in sync - any ideas? The mpg file was encoded with LSX Ligos Premiere plug-in. On the computer the audio is in sync but not on the Sony, the audio is a bit behind.

Superb hi-performance player (audio, SACD and DVD), but known to be not epecially versatile.
I could't get it to play SVCD, although it accepted some CD-R's (Sony media, not all) and some CDRWs (tested with Sony media). It did accept VCD.
I would welcome other feedback/tests, as I really want this player to be able to play SVCD.
