| Tried it with a Verbatim DVD+R DL (8.5 Gb), bitsetting set to DVD-ROM. Used Nero 6, and the disc plays. |

| Having tried for years to make DVDs which reliably play on my trusty S7000 (which still makes better pics than any of the much newer players I've bought) I can now say that the "magic" is to make a DVD which has its booktype set to DVD-ROM. I recently tried DVD+R media, having tried w/DVD-R to no avail (though, oddly, DVD-RWs do seem to work), and with a bitsetting burner it is recognized and plays beautifully. |

As far as picture and sound quality, the S7000 was a worthy investment back in the day and still paying for itself. I still enjoy it today with movies I buy and rent. I have had success with home built movies rendered through Mac OSX DVD Studio Pro 3 using Comp USA 1x DVD-R Media. I'm burning them on a Apple G4 w/ OSX 10.3, Dual 867MHz, and a Pioneer DVR-104 Burner.
I will try the other media suggested for my backup movies and repost if I have successful attempts. |

Original 7000 with switches, plays DVD +R Memorex but not Sony. So this player will play some DVD+Rs, I was surprised given the age of this machine. The DVDs were burned using DVD x copy gold, some with express some with regular burning, (less compression)
burned with Philips 6004 DVD +RW |

Looking back at my comments from July 25, 2002, they now seem overly optimistic. I had burned several DVD-R's that played in this unit, but after I posted those comments, I guess reality set in....
I seem to get about 30% of my DVD-R's to work on the Sony 7000, and have yet to definitively figure out what those 30% have in common that the other 70% don't.
Anyway, here's what will increase (but not guarantee) your chances of getting a DVD-R to play on the 7000:
Use Ulead DVD Workshop 1.3 or DVD MovieFactory 2.0 to do your authoring. Believe it or not, MovieFactory ($45) gives me somewhat better results (as in, more compatible with the 7000) even though it's only a sixth of Workshop's price ($279). Sonic MyDVD sometimes also gives compatible results, but otherwise that program sucks.
Use PCM sound for all files, even the menu music if you have a menu. Or use AC-3 sound if you have the new DVD Workshop AC-3 pack. The 7000 doesn't recognize MPEG audio at all.
If at all possible, don't use menus. If you have to have a menu, keep it simple. Skip the motion menus and just do a still one. This might have something to do with the better compatibility I'm getting with MovieFactory -- MovieFactory doesn't do motion menus.
Do your actual burning with Workshop or MovieFactory. I know that sounds like common sense, but a LOT of people do their actual burning with Nero. Don't. Not one disc I've burned with Nero will play on the 7000. Not a single one.
The brand of DVD-R or DVD-RW doesn't seem to make a whole lot of difference. I've used Pioneer, OptoDisc, Memorex, and VivaStar DVD-R's, plus Pioneer and Memorex DVD-RW's. In all cases, I get some that play in the 7000, some that don't.
Unfortunately, if you're looking for a really reliable player for DVD-R and DVD-RW, this machine just isn't it. It's just too old. Too bad, 'cause its picture and sound quality still blow away almost every player made today.

Well, well, well.... I made several DVD-R's and DVD-RW's with the new Ulead DVD Workshop 1.2 using the new PCM audio option, burned on the Pioneer 104, and they play fine on this player. Only problem is, to use PCM audio, DVD Workshop has to rerender the video, and there is a noticeable loss in picture quality compared to the same movie with MPEG audio (DWS didn't rerender). Maybe in version 1.3, Ulead can rerender the audio in PCM and leave the video alone. Then we'll have the best of both worlds with our Sony 7000's....

As I suspected, the DVP-S7000 does indeed play home-brew DVDs flawlessly, in my case DVD-RW, and the "magic" is that you must be fully DVD-Spec-compliant in every way, which includes 720x480 video, and 48KHz-sampled audio (PCM or AC3) not MPEG-1 Layer 2 or other sample rates.
I had made a disc w/MPEG Layer 2 audio as have others which resulted in video but no sound. Upon encoding the audio to AC3, the disc plays as you'd expect, reporting the 2/0 ac3 audio, and the video allowing slow-mo and FF and whatnot. Very exciting! I assume next that since this DVD-RW (from Meritline) worked, that DVD-R will work also but haven't burned one of these yet. Using Pioneer A03 to burn... |

Tried both DVD-R (generic media) and DVD-RW (the free disc that came with my Cendyne DVD-RW burner). Both formats give me a beautiful picture but no sound. In fact, trying to change the audio track with the remote control gives a message saying "There is no audio recorded on the disc" or something like that. Bummer....

| My first disc using Pio's A03, DVD-RW media from Meritline, and ULead's DVD Workshop exhibited beautiful video playback (a huge surprise given that I did not expect it to even be recognized) but alas no audio. Will report back if I figure this out, but it DOES make very pretty pictures on my 1st gen DVP-S7000. |

| Great interlaced video (among the best). Plays VCD's beautifully. Does not play SVCD or (X)VCD even when altering the header info inorder to trick the DVP7000 into thinking that the CD-R is a Video CD with MPEG2 stream. Does not play Mini-DVD, MP3 nor DTS DVD sound stream, although, it does play DTS 5.1 audio CDs. |

| Great player for it's time, but I can't get it to play DVD-R either using a DVR-A03 and generic media. It works fine in my APEX 600A, and Toshiba SD-P1000 though. If you can get DVD-R to work, tell us how you did it. Thanks. |

| I created my own SVCD using GoDVD. The S7000 thought it was a standard CD and would not play it. I have one of the very early models made. It is possible newer models work. |
