Well this board has been incredibly valuable. Thanks everyone for contributing. It seems I'm a bit late, but for those reading this in 2004 November I've found a CDR brand that will work!
PRINCO brand does work. I'm in Canada so I don't know about availability elsewhere. A lucky discovery for me since I was unable to find the brands discussed here. It took me a while to track down princo but if you find em scoop em up.
Although cdrw will work I wouldn't even bother now that I have the princo cdr. It plays them flawlessly regardless of burning speed. For less than 30 cents a disk why worry? |

This is a follow-up to my 1st report with info I forgot to mention.
When you fast forward or rewind VCD playback it will unsync the audio/video like it does with SVCDs. It also does not support SVCD menus which sucks alot too.
Buy something else. |

First off this is a very nice player and looks great. It reads all media except CD-Rs. I gave up on CD-Rs but oh well. It plays VCDs flawlessly but SVCD has problems most of the time. The audio usually gets out of sync with the video and begins pixelating. The only remedy for this is to press stop once and begin playback again until it messes up again. It's really annoying!
Verbatim DataLife Plus DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, DVD-RW and 680MB CD-RW work very well. Memorex 800MB CD-RWs work well too. |

This thing rarely lets me down. For DVD media I have used some generic purple-dye discs, Verbatim DVD-R,+R,-RW,+RW and all play just fine.
As far as VCD and SVCD, only CD-RW media seems to work and it plays these formats very well. I use Memorex 80min and Verbatim datalife 74min CD-RW discs. When playing back a VCD sometimes audio/video unsyncs after using the Fast-Forward/Review functions but other than that it is a very reliable player. |

| I just wanted to enter my compatibility and functionality info to the database. I've tried Verbatim and Fuji DVD-R, they work fine. The player doesnt play CDRs but I read about the Circuit City brand "Digital Media" on this page and sure enough it will play them fine. I was amazed. It plays RW fine. It won't do chapters on SVCD but it will on VCD. Does XVCD fine. Sometimes it will have a glitch onscreen with a SVCD that is not present when I view on my PC with my DVDROM drive. The main thing I regret about buying this player is that I spent $650 Canadian for the decoders, when I don't even have the capability to use them. And even if I did buy a digital receiver, I would not buy one without decoders. The price dropped by a few hundred right after I bought it too. I do like the jog shuttle on the remote but the button layout is awkward and hard to remember. I like the picture memory feature. Hope this info is helpful to people, I know this is an old player by now but it *is* a good one. |

Hey I just returned my stack of Cursor Colour CD-Rs, because my Burner does not seem to like them and thus it wouldnt burn on them. I kept getting "calibration area full" errors. So I switched over to CR-RWs, works great so far, any brand. However, my sony did not pick up the audio files burned onto CD-RW, only VCD. Also, my CD-RW VCDs still worked when burned at higher speeds, and only quick erased.
I`m burning with Nero 5.5.10

I was very happy with this DVD player, until I discovered VCDs and SVCDs (I started making my first VCD about Jan 2002). I was very unhappy to find out (at first) that CD-Rs did not work with my player. I tried everything posted here, color, Digital Media, Circuit City, Maxell, TDK, Imation, etc. Everything posted and then more. I had almost given up on CD-Rs (CD-RW sony, Maxell and generic from allmediaoutlet.com). This are my results (using Nero latest version as of Feb 2003):
CD-RW: all brands I tested (mentioned above) worked fine most of the times. Some times they just stop working and when I try again later, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.
CD-R: I made a couple of VCD and SVCD (using TMPGEnc) for a philips Q35 DVD (which seems to take everything) and just for fun, I put the VCD in my Sony DVD. I was amazed when it worked with no problems whatsoever. I then tried the SVCD I had created, and it was great too... I was able to watch two full hours with no problem. This was a coincidence but I was happy to find out.
The brand I found out worked is a generic brand sold by Fry's Electronics (GQ Great Quality CD-R 48X 700 MB) for $7.99. I have already used over 50 on my DVD and they are great. If anyone doesn't have access to Fry's Electronics or can not find it, I am willing to send a couple of CDs for testing for a buck and then shipping (or prepaid envelope). If anyone wants them, I can send one or two spindles ($11.00 each + shipping or prepaid envelope).
So, I can now say that the Sony DVP-S570D does take CD-R
Good Luck. |

Nero 5.5 + HP7200i + Imatation CD-RWs
Can get VCDs to work only with CD-RW. I tried a handful of CD-Rs and even picked up a few 'cheap' CD-Rs as suggested by some of you but I couldn't get them working. We don't have Circuit City here in Canada. Glad to see somebody from Canada found some cheap CD-Rs at futureshop.
I did find, however, that the more times I burn and re-burn on the same CD-RW that the DVD player cannot pick it up as good and it freezes and gets all digital on me. So, I find that it is best that I burn a new CD-RW for each time I burn a VCD. I hope to try the cheap Future Shop CD-Rs so I can burn spindles upon spindles of 50c CD-Rs! Well, 50c plus the digital media levy tax they are charging us here! Yikes! |

I have tried burning VCD onto CD-R media from Memorx and Imation with no success.
I have had 100% success burning VCD onto CD-RW media from Memorex and Sony.
I have successfully created Chapters using VCDEasy which means the Sony S570D support PBC.
DVD ripper: DVD Decrypter
VOB convert: DVD2AVI
MPEG convert: TMPGEnc
Burning: VCDEasy, CD-RW at 4x
Burner: Yamaha 2100E (IDE)
I have not tried any other encoding/authoring/burning options.

This is a great DVD player, but I have tried several CD-Rs and they don't seem to work.
the Recordable Digital Media from STI (CD-R). I also tried Circuit City CD-R and Imation CD-R. Nothing seems to work.
I used CD-RW and worked fine. So far Maxell (650 74 min) works fine as well as STI RW
I am using Nero and/or EZ CD creator to create vcd. I have not tried SVCD and wont try anytime soon until I find suitable CD-R's |

ATI AIW PRO 32 + WIN2K + TMPGEnc + Nero + AIR?
I had burnt some SVCD's about 6 months ago which worked fine. I put them away forgot about them and then a week ago got an itch to create some new ones. They would not play and I knew I was using the same recipe to make them. Then I took the old ones, which I knew worked at one time, and tried those and the wouldn't work either (what a pisser). Then I tried the solution recommended somewhere on this site which merely involved cleaing the lense in the DVD player (I used one of those compressed air cans you find @ COMP USA) and the thing fired up like a charm for all the SVCDs. I would imagine this means the laser is anal retentive and requires a spotless environment. |

Sometimes cdr's work, sometimes they dont. Sometimes cdrw's work, sometimes they dont.
I love it, and I hate it. Cheap cdr's seem to work better than quality brand name ones. Also noticed that SVCD on cheap cdr's work great most of the time.

Works great!
Plays only PRIME PERIPHERALS CD-r's.
Once or twice a year I clean the laser with a cleaning cd. I do this when the player stops recognizing the cd-r. This fixes the problem....
