It does read most cdrw's I've thrown at it, and most recently, I'm pleased to report that it played my dvd+rw (4x Mitsumi) and dvd-rw (2x maxell) just fine.

CVD? $? over 1 year No rating Comments: I haven't been able to get this player to play anything burned from my computer (CD or DVD). I'm using an HP 640i DVD+-R/RW drive as the burner and the Sonic software that came with the drive. All the media I've created works on everything else in my house and car except the S550D -- the CD's I've burned even work on my ol' Pioneer laser disc player, but not the "newer" sony.

Both burned with Pioneer DVR-107D with 1.15 official firmware.

MP3 WMA CVD? $500 N/A 10 of 10 JPG/JPEG DVD-JPG MP3 long filename DivX Comments: People in these forums have to remember that there are 5 main things to remember when burning files to DVD or backing up DVDs. 1.) Is the ripping software working properly on the computer system you are using (OS and DVD/CD Burner Hardware). 2.) Are you using the proper DVD/CD media that is compatible with your burner and DVD player. For testing what type or brand of DVDs or CDs are compatible, start off using DVD-/+ RW or CD-RW. This atleast lets you know what brands and dyes your burner and player use without spending a whole lot of money. Also read the forums. Very useful and cheap learning off other peoples mistakes and successes! 3. There are a lot of excellent freeware ripping programs out on the Internet. You do not have to spend big bucks to find a program that works consistently with your PC and player. 4. If possible try and dedicate one computer system for burning and ripping. If you are like me and are constanly adding new players and software to your PCs, adding software to a stable burning system may cause problems. Especially if you are running any Windows platform. 5. The new DVD players are so cheap and the lasers they use are designed to be more compatible than older players. It is probably worth the $50 - $100 bucks to buy one. Hey if it lasts a year you are still laughing. Burning 25 -30 DVD coasters is the price of a new player. Hope this helps!

CVD? $500 N/A 10 of 10 Comments: I bought it years ago. It is antique and lack of a lot of features but it still works very well for me. I tried SONY DVD+R (4X, DPR47L2, purple) and it works. I used NEC ND-1300A, DVD-decrypter, DVD-shrink 3.1.4 and Nero. The disc is not cheap. 9.99 for 6 (holiday pack) at Wal-mart.

Was happy to see that inexpensive and fast Ritek G04 4x DVD-R's played fine in it.. (burned with Sony DRU500A)

N/A No rating Comments: Burned several home movies in DVD format using Sonic MyDVD (yeah, I know.. but it was free with the drive) using Sony DRX-510UL drive on firewire (1394) port. DVD Plays flawlessly. Seems to work fine.

N/A 6 of 10 Comments: Had good luck playing VCD with Memorex CD-R/W Also likes TDK DVD-R. I've never seen the audio sync problem other people seem to report. I bought this deck ($500!) because it had 2 S-Video outputs; one for the TV, and one for the MPEG-2 hardware encoder i was developing. (Saw "Antz" 500 times ;) and for this it serves me well. These days, i would be more concerned about software formats, for which this deck is sorely lacking. (although, most of them weren't invented back then).

N/A No rating Comments: I burn CD-R's and CD-RW's to play on this player. I have not found any CD-R's that work. Most CD-RW's do not work. The best CD-RW's are Imation 1x-4x, and imation 4x-10x. Comp USA CD-RW SKU # 288609 does NOT work for me (no disk found). The following the system reads a disk but the video comes out distorted some or all of the time: Office Depot # 916-621, Memorex CD-RW 10x or 12x.

This model ahs probles with audio sync with certain DVD companies. Probably will not buy Sony again.

This machine is garbage. Sony is crap and so is my Sony Wega. I'm done with Sony. :)

Have had success with: Imation CD-RW The player is sometime finicky about the CR-RW's I sometimes has to eject them and reinsert them. But they all have worked. Have had no problems at all with: Memorex DVD+R Maxel DVD+RW SONY DVD+RW

The only thing that I have found that works consistently is PRINCO brand CDR media. Note that I did not say "branded", I use only the "unbranded" or unlabeled 80 minute CDRs. I buy from a place online IO Products, http://www.ioproducts.com/ and their PRINCO media works every time. It also seems to work well in other pick DVD players. Just about every CD-RW I've tried works in this Player, including: Maxell branded, Verbatim branded, LG Electronics branded, Sony branded, and HP branded.

N/A 8 of 10 Comments: Tried Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+RW and works fine. Also tested with Sony DVD+RW and DVD-RW. No problems. Didn't test with DVD-R and DVD+R yet. Very good DVD player. The only weak points are: - no support for CD-R and CD-RW of any kind. - no region hack available.
