I have tried Verbatim (Data Life Plus)DVD+R and DVD+RW and Fujifilm (Data/movie) DVD-R. Most often the player recognize and play both the DVD+R and the DVD-R brands, but when I load the DVD+RW it says "no disk".

Even though it recognize the disks, the movies often freezes or start skipping, or locks up in the menues (this is actually also a problem with newer original movies, where I often have to load the disk several times before the player accept it).

Tried a That's Write DVD-R from a friend, and the film didn't really start well. The player said "EMG STOP", but when I pressed the DVD Menu button, it went to the menu. Then the film played for a good while, but it froze at scene 12. I tried this several times, every time the same. When I played the DVD-R in my DVD-ROM it worked fine. There seemed to be no damage to the surface of the disc. So the DVD-R (4.7 GB) General That's Write wasn't quite a success.
I also tried a Lite-On CD-RW (VCD), but got "No Disc", but that is probably because the Lite-On CD-RWs suck.

Excellent playback of DVDs and CDs. Doesn't support CDRs. Supports very few CD-RWs. DVD+R and DVD-R work without problems. Only Macrovision/Region hack available is relatively complicated hardware (i.e. rewiring/soldering surface mount chips) fix.

No Problems with playing DVD-R and DVD-RW
I used Verbatim, Sony and Panasonic DVD-R/-RW (Toshiba SD-R5002, nero and InstantCD-DVD)
But the sound quality of this Sony isn't good enough! I only use this player for movies.

What a blast! Recently got a Pioneer A05 DVD-R/RW drive and I'm surprised at the great results with DVD-R/RW on my 2 year old DVP-S535D.

Successful burns with:
Pioneer 2x DVD-RW media.
Pioneer 2x and 4x DVD-R media.
Verbatim 2x DVD-R.

Using latest Nero 5110 (DVD mode 1)
Using DVDXCopy ver 1.3 and 1.31 for full DVD backup.
Perfect backup of The Matrix with all menus & features - white rabbit, subtitles, extras...
Problems on a few other DVD titles and menus, but that was due to incorrect IFO files which were later fixed. No coasters as always use RW for testing original burn. Overall, one happy camper.

As promised december 16 2002 the results of my DVD+ burning experiments. I succesfully used:
* Nero burning ROM 5.5.9.17
* AOpen DVRW2412PRO (writes DVD+R and DVD+RW at 2.4x)
* +RW-media:
Verbatim DVD+RW DataLifePlus SERL EUR 3.60 Jewel-box
* +R-media:
Nashua DVD+R Record Once Format version 1.0,
EUR 7.00 in DVD-box
Verbatim DVD+R DataLifePlus metalAZO
EUR 2.50Jewel-box
Platinum DVD+R EUR 1.95 in Jewel-box

Conclusion: The player succesfully played all the DVD+R and DVD+RW media I have tried until now.

I found only one peculiarity: The player needs some "seek time" inbetween two .mpg files. I intentionally use the term .mpg files, because this seek time will occur even if the original two .mpg videos are packed into one single .vob file on the DVD.
To prevent this kind of hiccup I first merge the smaller .mpg files into one big .mpg file before authoring the DVD. .mpg files can easily be merged with the binary copy command in a "DOS box":

copy /b source1.mpg + source2.mpg + source3.mpg target.mpg

Using XP this way you can create files even bigger than 4 GB.

This "seek time peculiarity" also occurs at play back of SVCDs.

- FYI: At this moment (januari 1st 2003) 1 EUR = 1.04 USD

Comments:
My player succesfully played the two DVD's (+R and +RW) I burned until now. I used:
* software: Nero burning ROM 5.5.9.17
* burner: AOpen DVRW2412PRO (writes DVD+R and DVD+RW at 2.4x)
* +RW-media: Nashua DVD+RW (Rewrite Format version 1.1)
* +R-media: Imation DVD+R (for general use)

In the future I will be testing some other media. But for now: I tried the cheapest DVD+ media I easily could get my hands on and they worked.
(The Nashua DVD+RW for EUR 8,- and the Imation DVD+R for EUR 5,- At this moment EUR = USD)

So this SONY DOES read DVD+R, but DOES NOT read CD-R. And at this moment the DVD-media are getting cheaper and cheaper.
Also the resolution used for SVCD (480x576) is no part of the DVD standard. That's why I think the transferring SVCD-video's to DVD (the capacity of 1 DVD = 7 CD's) will require some transcoding.

So I strongly recommend every s535D-owner to consider burning DVDs instead of sticking to CDs.

And in addition to my previous review posted October 19 2001:

To play a collection of mp2-audio-tracks (MPEG-1 Layer 2 on a CD-RW) you have to multiplex these audio-streams with a minimal video-stream. Otherwise the SONY player will stop playback after one or two minutes - per track.
I generated an 48 kbps video-stream (still image of song title) and used TMPGEnc for multiplexing. In my tests only the Ligos codec accepted this very low video-bitrate.

The speed limit I mentioned (2x CD) is the reading speed of CDs on this player (and not a burning speed).

VCD PAL and NTSC works fine with PYROD brand 74min/650mb CDRW at 2x speed, didnt work at 4x
VCD would not work at all using a "Datastream" brand 80min/700mb CDRW at any speed (keep getting "no disc detected" message)

I havent got any brand of cdr to work, and cant seem to find the Vivastar or DataSafe brand here in Australia

quite often get c13 disc dirty error message or no disc detected on a known good NTSC dvd I bought overseas, but strangely the same disc works fine in my playstation 2

Verbatim General Storage DVD-R 4.7Gb (version 2.0) disks play every time perfectly and are recognised first time, every time. (From what I hear DVD-R is the format that is most compatible with old DVD players and many new ones – DVD+R won’t play in most machines reliably try a disk in a shop – you will see what I mean!!) Verbatim DVD-R disks are available from almost all shops that sell DVD media. The picture and sound are perfect, after testing I have found the player will except bit rates from 4Mbit up to 8Mbit (Constant bit rate). And I have also tested 4Mbit and 6Mbit Variable Bit Rate and they work fine. It also plays MPEGS at different resolutions, 720x576 x 25fps works fine as does 352x576 x 25fps and 352 x 288 x 25fps. (encoding done with TMPGEnc Plus, video originally captured with a WINTV-PVR-250 – there are no audio sink problems with the PVR-250!!!) It will also recognise MPEGS I encode in 16:9 format and of course 4:3 and will squeeze MPEGS that are encoded in anamorphic format (like the ones in real DVD’s). Menus work well – all created with Ulead DVD MovieFactory. All in all this player seems to play Verbatim DVD-Rs with out a hitch (I haven’t tried other makes yet or DVD-RW but I guess they will work fine too – this is a second generation DVD player – hence why it can play DVD-Rs but not CD-R, many of the new 3rd generation players you see in the shops today can’t play DVD-R or DVD+R – you have been warned – try before you buy!!!!!!) It’s a pity this player can’t play CD-Rs (It will play some CD-R that are very dark blue when you look at them in front of a strong light but is very very picky – not worth the bother to be honest, especially now I know that the machine play’s DVD-Rs. Though if you need to make some VCDs or SVCDs use CD-RWs, TDK ones work very well as well as other makes, both 650MB & 700MB – you will be able to format them lots of times before the machine starts to have problems and make sure you don’t scratch the CD-RW’s!!!! and also don’t use 2.6 MB as max bit rate the video can jerk a bit – use 2.5 Mbit then it works fine)

All in all a great DVD player with DVD-R compatibility – pity about CD-Rs but it’s a second generation player so what do you expect!

I tested severall CD-RW's as VCD. Every brand i used works!
BUT, after a few quick formats and burns at 4x or 10x, some of the mediums stopped working. Sometimes the picture freezes and the player searches, or the disc is instantly rejected.

Use only quality CD-RW mediums and you shouldn't have any problems. Even at 10x writing speed!

Have tried both cr-r and cr-rw. Seems opposite of everything I have read, but the cr-r's (Digital Media and Memorex) work fine. Could not get Fuji cr-rw top work at all. Just tried the same brand memorex disc as previosly burned but with a higher multispeed (24x and 40x) and they would not work on the machine at all. Confused me I just used the same discs for the past year. I guess they changed something in the disc when they changed the speed.
