Using two different DVP-S530D's with firmware of 9C and 9D,
I've had o problem reading Verbatim MKM-001 DVD+R DL discs.
Some issues reading Optical Quantum RICOHJPND01 DVD+R DL discs but only 2nd layer.
BTW, there are several different firmware versions of this player, at least 9A, 9B, 9C, and 9D.
This model player was manufactured in at least Malaysia and in Japan.

PLEASE POST YOUR FIRMWARE STICKER CODE WHEN LISTING YOUR FEEDBACK. The two digit code is on the back of the player; it's a sticker next to the serial number. I suspect some firmware may work better than others with certain discs. And I've not verified which the region unlock works with.
You can also check the firmware by going into DIAG mode by pressing TITLE, CLEAR, then POWER on the remote. Choose VERSION from the menu. (Supposedly do NOT run ALL the other diagnostic tests as per the manual some can damage your boards.)
The sticker code 9C corresponds to SYScon version EAAE.
The sticker code 9D corresponds to SYScon version 865A.
BTW, the <title>, <clear> <power> sequence to get into the Diagnostic menu is also a nice way to get this player to make the player a COLOR BAR GENERATOR and show color bars. |

I've had this thing for years. Left in a closet for several of those years. I dragged it out to test the optical audio connections with a new Dennon A/V swtich.
For a player this old, it really does have exceptional audio and video quality and does play a boat load formats.
I use Sonic MyDVD v 6.x to burn Tivo2Go and other programming to a single layer DVD+R/RW.
The video quality is not great on a single layer DVD. I have Dual Layer hardware en route and will update every one on my progress soon.

| This was the first DVD player I ever bought and it has no problem playing whatever I throw at it. I finally got a hold of some Memorex DVD+R DL and after trying a disc burned with CloneDVD2 that did not work, I did some research on here and used RecordNow 7.3 to burn after ripping wit DVDDecrypter and every disc plays perfectly. It even handles the layer shift flawlessly. |

This player will definitely play DVD-RW discs. I use a first generation burner (Philips DVD+RW-D01) that ONLY burns DVD-RW discs. I have primarily used Studio version 8 to burn from mini DV tape. I recently discovered something I have not seen documented elsewhere. I could not play copied DVDs on this player although they played fine on my PC. After many hours I discovered the bit setting (book type) on the copied DVDs set to DVD-ROM (vs DVD+RW on the DVDs burned from tape with Studio). After changing the bit setting to DVD+RW the copied DVDs played. Bitsetting can be changed with Nero Burning ROM or with (free) DVDbitsetter.exe. | Memorex 2x DVD-RW works in this player. The reason I chose Memorex is because their CD-RW's work too. Burned DVD using Nero 6 using the settings explained at this website. It burned a perfect DVD despite the minor warning pop-ups regarding file allocation and byte size. Original DVD was ripped and compressed using DVD Shrink. |

I bought this devivce about 5 years ago (1998) and it is still working like new. Occasionally the sound and video get a little off, but stopping and restarting the movie fixes the problem.
I burned a memorex 4x DVD-R on a Sony Vaio and it worked perfectly in the DVD player.
I have tried nothing else yet. |

i'm glad it worked. before you burn the cd, they ask you about the video mode and just make sure you set it to ntsc because that's the one the dvd player reads. i know this because the first dvd i made was set to pal and it didn't read.

I bought this player a looooooooong time ago. It skips a bit too much, always has, and it has a design flaw that results in disc spin noise like a 747 turbine, but I haven't replaced it yet. MiniDVD & CDR would be very nice, but I might wait until HD-DVD comes out.
I've played -R, +R, +RW and they've all played.
Plays DVD+RW fine for me: Ricoh 2.4x, Liteon 2.4x.
It's a drag to need to burn a CDRW to play audio or VCD from this thing. I was never able to get the XVCD to work. |

Player only recognizes DVD-R media. Gave it to my girlfreind and bought a JVC, which recognizes anything I throw at it.
Did not recognize VCD, or any of the DVD+/-RW's I tried.

CD-Rw 4x most brands work well for both Audio-CD and VCD 1.0.
Verbatim and Imation DVD-R 1x-2x work, but only if player has been warmed up using a commercially made DVD. Otherwise, expect freezing and lock-ups.
DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW cannot get player to recognize disc. |

| Owned this player for over 3 years now, and nothing yet has surpassed it in playback quality. I bought a few more players since then, but I always come back to use this one for critical viewing. I hope this player last as long as my first VCR that worked for over 10 years. Everything old is new again, since I have acquired a DVD burner. This player will not be obsolete for a long time, thanks to my DVD burner. |

I have burned several Memorex DVD-R's on my Optodisc 4x R+/- Drive. All discs played without a problem. Haven't tried R+ media yet or any RW.

| I bought this DVD player about 4 years ago and it's worked out great for me ever since. Doesn't play MP3s or SVCDs, but I didn't really buy it for that. After consulting this site, I chose Memorex CD-RWs for my VCD needs and they've worked out great. However, I recently bought a new spindle of 25 Memorex CD-RWs and they are not working. The previous CD-RWs I had been using were labeled "Memorex CD-RW ReWritable Platinum 650 MB/74 min". The new ones have the similar green wrapping on the spindle but are 700 MB and 80 min. They also don't say "Platinum" on them. From my tests, these new CD-RWs do not work. Anyone else have this same problem? Any new media that you could point me to? Thanks. |

| I haven't yet gotten it to read a VCD made on Maxell, Imation or Sony discs. Reads almost all of my DVD-Rs perfectly, I've used Maxell and Ritek exclusively because that's all my recorder will burn. Sticks sometimes, and I get the occasional C:13:00 error but usually if I take the disc out and wipe it off it will play fine. |
