Quite an expensive player. Plays most of the known formats. Does have some trouble with the sound, have never been able to get it right.
Also has a weird kind of navigating, you can't see the chapternumbers in the display.
Has some trouble with some SVCD's and nearly impossible to hack.
Overall it's just a overprised DVD-player (170 $) for a moderate quality. |

I have had this player for 6 years and it has always worked great for me. Doesn't have a lot of features compared to today's players, though. Still, I'm not ready to get rid of it - may get a new player and relegate this one to the bedroom.
I just got a Plextor PX-716SA and have had some problems with burned media playing in the DVP-S330. I'll list the media that had worked and update this as I try more brands.

I've had this player a long time and I like it. I've created VCD with Easy CD-Creator 4 and now with Ulead DVD MovieFactory 2 SE. They always play on this machine as long as I use CD-R/W.
I just got the DVD burner and a Hauppauge WinTV-PVR-usb2. The WinTV video capture has 3 DVD settings; Standard, Long Play, and Extra Long Play. Standard does not work. The Long Play and MPEG1 VCD settings both capture video that MovieFactory was able to use to create DVDs that play in this machine. I have not yet tried the other settings.
I suspect DVD Standard has too much data for the Sony to handle. I used imation DVD-RW ver. 1.1 disks successfully. RiData and Memorex DVD+RW failed. |

I just tried Maxell CD-RW 650 MB 74 min (from Circuit city), recorded VCD at 10X speed,using Nero 6 Ultra.
I have a CD-RW/DVD combo drive (R-write 16x; RW-write 10x; DVD-read 8x; CD-RW read 12x; CD-read 24x)drive on a sony vaio 2.4 GHZ notebook. worked first time, NO luck with SVCD though.
Just ordered my external Sony DRX510UL drive and cant wait to burn DVDs. will keep you updated !

| I used DVD2SVCD then the header trick. Burn with nero at 4x on MEMOREX 4x CD-RW. It works perfect accept for audio sync problems but if you tap scan then play real quick it resets it and is perfect. VERY GOOD CLEAR MOVIE. |

I tried Memorex DVD+R - it will work but if you use the "Still Pictures" mode in DVDShrink, that section that uses StillPictures will not display correctly. The rest of the video works fine.
BTW, this DVD+R wouldnt play nice on my Apex 1110W player (in UDF1.02 mode). |

This DVD-Player is great for only watching dvds but if you want to play video cds your sure as hell going to have some trouble. I did a little reasearch i learned the only some CD-Rs work on the dvd player one that i have found to work is called "Curoser". I have tried sony "CD-Rs" and DID NOT work funny eh. I have tried practicully all cd rws out there and noticed most of em all work. Maxell cd-rs work, memorex, and sony.
So in conclusion, dont buy CD-rs u will j ust be waisting ur money just buy a bundle of cdrs in order to watch vcds. Also this DVD PLAYER SUX if u just want it to watch vcds. I Recomend to get either a Apex player or a GoVideo Player. The GoVideo Player is my best choice plays everything from vcd to svcd.

This player is good. It has it's likes and it's dislikes. But it is not wishy washy. I have can play vcds as long as they are burned on cdrw media. I use the least expensive disc I can buy and everything plays great. 50 disc for $9.95.
It will play SVCD if I do the Header Trick without any problem. Considering that other players of this age don't play much, I find that it is reliable and worth the money I spent. |

| Sony DVD+RW discs work everytime. Fujifilm DVD+R's work some of the time which is frustrating when you have 2 movies copied and one doesn't work. I think the darker the dye on the discs the more problems you will run into.My Samsung plays everything I've thrown at it. |

Just got the HP dvd200i. I have written VCD's to Infodisc and Memorex CD-RW's with MyDVD and with Video Studio 6 and they work fine on the Sony S330. Other people have said that DVD-RW's work with the S330 but I can make teh HP dvd-rw that comes with the dvd to work in the S330. I have written the dvd with MyDVD, the program that comes with the HP and also in Video Studio 6 with no luck. They are viewable on the PC with PowerDVD but don't work in the player. I have set the recorder to mode 1 with the HP utility. Any help would be appreciated.

I've burned VCDs with sony crx-168b using easy cd creator, nero, and fire burner. I burned DVDs with Sony dru-500ax and nero 5.5.
I've only listed the media I was sure of (could remember), but in the past I've used other media and believe all cd-rw media has worked. Sony is the only cd-r media that has worked, so stick to cd-rw media for vcds. This player will not play SVCD so don't was your time trying, but it will play XVCD if your looking to improve on VCD picture quality.
All the DVD (-rw,+rw) media I've tried has worked 100%.
The s330 is a solid player. I purchased mine a few years ago when they were released and have not felt the need to upgrade. It is an older model that lacks the features of some new players, so I would recommend a newer model sony if your in the market for a dvd player.

| So far with this payer i'm able to play vcds fine with any cd-rw but no no with regular cdrs I am able to play dvd+rw fine all I have tried is hp media for +rw and everything i've burnt worked with a hp200j bruner. as for dvd+r I have tried memorex in brand and that has worked for me also so far all dvd+r and dvd+rw have worked. my hp burner is set to compatibility mode 1. quality on this player its pretty nice even though its an older dvd player. |

I havn't tested all the different disc that some of you have, but I have not had any luck with the ones I have tried. However, if you read page 5 of the Sony manual, it clearly states that this unit DOES NOT support CR-R, CD-ROM, PHOTO CD, CD-EXTRA or DVD-ROM. Basicly anything that has been burned in a computer.
I guess if your lucky enough to find one that works, great, but don't blame Sony or the product for something that it was not designed to support. |

| I'm back, I finally got some DVD+RW discs for my HP DVD Writer 100i. Anywho, I burned a short video using the MyDVD software that came with the DVD burner, and it worked on the Sony! I used Verbatim 2.4x DVD+RW discs. |

I tried Memorex CD-RW, some worked for vcds some didn't.
I ordered a spindle of 50 Princo CD-Rs from IOProducts.com and had little success burning at 2X, so I burnt at 8X and have had 100% success. |

| I thought it would be helpful for users to know that I tried burning SVCD's and VCD's to Harmony, Verbatim, and GoogleGear CD-R's and they did not work with this DVD player. I would hope to be able to check back and find media that DOES work with this player (any successes, please post details) as I used 5.5.10.0 nero version to burn my discs. |

I burned a VCD on a Maxell CD-R "40x Pro" with an Acer CD-RW, but the Sony read "No Disc". Was burned using Nero 5.5.7.2. I have also a DVD-R that I didn't burn myself, but it works in the DVPS330.
Have just gotten my HP DVD-Writer 100i. I have read that the DVPS330 is compatible with DVD+RW discs on the HP website. I also saw that a user, Dante, posted that he successfully played a DVD+RW disc that he burned with his HP DVD-Writer 200i. Wondering if he could tell me what brand DVD+RW discs he was using. |
