It's been great, use it for music, DVD's, etc. No problems (knock wood) to speak of. I just tried a Memorex DVD R- burned on a Liteon 811s and it worked perfectly. DVD RW+ worked fine too. Amazing, given how long ago this unit was on the market. Mine was one of the originals that was built in Japan, not Malaysia or China. I'm hoping it will hang on a while longer!

N/A 5 of 10 Comments: Worked with Maxell branded 2x. Did not work with Ritek R02. It is also possible that it is sensitive to bitrate. Lower bitrate (< 6 mbs) seemed to work more often than high bitrate (6-8 mbs), but I did not scientifically verify this, so this may not be correct. I also had some problems with discs burned with DVD Architect 1.0 (with AC3 audio), but few with MovieFactory 2.0 (with MPEG audio). However, I had three variables (media, bitrate, and authoring program) and about fifteen discs, some of which played perfectly, some of which played and then stopped, and some of which would mostly play, glitch, and then continue. I didn't have the time to sort all this out. However, the Maxell media always played.

Had problems with Memorex DVD-R as well.

N/A No rating JPG/JPEG DVD-MP3 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: i couldn't get any +RW to work on this (fuji, verbatim, memorex 2.4x discs) using 1.3.1 version of DVDXCOPY. but fuji, memorex, and verbatim DVD+R discs all worked great. i had luck with black PNY discs for cd-r's as well. just used the sony dru-500a 1.0f and burned these. hope this helps

N/A 8 of 10 Comments: I was frustrated because I could see the VCD logo on the LCD at an angle, but my ancient player was never able to read any of the CD-Rs or CD-RWs that worked just fine with my friends' players. Then, one day, the player finally started failing to read commercial DVDs that worked fine in the past. I thought it was a good reason to trash it and buy a new one, but I paid a visit to vcdhelp.com and found the tip to activate the factory menu: - Turn player off (standby mode) - Press [Title], [Clear] and [Power] From the menu, I selected option "1.Drive Auto Adjustment" and followed the instructions to insert a Single layered DVD, Double layered DVD, CD, and so on. After the calibration, I was able to play not only the DVDs that were failing but also VCDs!!! To ensure compatibility I repeated the adjustment using a CD-R. Works like a charm!

N/A 8 of 10 Comments: I have just been successful in viewing a DVD+R disc in my Sony DVP-S300. Worked great. Here are the steps I took: Downloaded DV from DV camcorder, edited, and created mpeg-2 using Pinnacle Studio 7. Used Sonic MyDVD to both build dvd file that includes menu, and to burn video to disc. Burner is NEC 1100A DVD+R/DVD+RW which can burn at the rate of 4X.

CVD? $300 N/A 7 of 10 Comments: I was able to burn some generic DVD-R (4x) with my Pioneer DVR-A05U and able to play it in my DVP-S300! It would definitely not play my DVD-RW. DVD-R I used was: Sunpower 4X High RIT-4XDVRJ-10 from http://www.sunpowerusa.com/ I cannot verify it actually recorded at 4x, but I burned about 2GB in less than 8 minutes (roughly).

N/A 8 of 10 Comments: I've tried 3 different types of media and only the generic silver back has worked so far. Memorex 700MB/80min 48x CD-R with white back = NO DISC reading from player. Digital Research 700MB/80min 16x CD-R with silver/black back = NO DISC reading from player. I'm off to Best Buy to find some generic media after blowing $35 on 100 Memorex craptastic CD-R's =(

I then take the bbmpeg files and use simple demux under mpeg tools in Tempg to make a svcd compliant vcd. (this is supposed to give you the quality of an svcd which will play on a vcd only player). Once complete I use vcdeasy to burn my backup. Anyway this works great except the picture on my TV is in the lower half of the screen. Really sux....

N/A 5 of 10 Comments: Bought this unit when they first came out. I only recently retired it (gave to friend) after purchasing 2 Pioneer DV-C503 units. The Sony DVP-S300 unit is not destructable. It survived my two kids doing VERY bad things to it. One thing I absolutely hate about this unit is that, at least on mine, if you pause a DVD, it will leave the laser on and kill the disk. I lost (melted) several DVD disks until I finally figured out what was happening (Actually, I lost 2, and the 3rd was the kids not knowing "Don't PAUSE!!!") Played VCDs fantasticly on CD-R media. Not bad for an ancient unit! But I can't bring myself to give a DVD player more than a 5 after it melted $70 in movies.

CVD? $450 N/A 9 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: Have only used TDK CD-R's 74 & 80 mins. Basically, keep the Video bitrate at 1150 and change the resolution to whatever you want, ie, 720 X 480. Encodes fine to 23.97 NTSC if the original DVD is at 23.97 NTSC. Have only tested about four movies so far. Used NERO to burn the XVCD as Non-compliant. Good Luck. Larry.

CVD? $450 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: Bought it in the fall of '97, would have bought the 7000 but couldn't afford it. There has been one DVD I couldn't play, it was bought at SAMS warehouse on the clearance rack, it would play in a newer machine but not in my -3000. I don't buy DVDs there anymore. I have used all sorts of CDR media in it. It will only read the first cut (of multiple session disks) If you erase part and start over then it wont work at all. Other than that I only buy cheap $0.25 clearance 50-packs of CDR media and it all works just fine. Will load the SVCD but will not play. Will not load CDRW (says insert disk). I have used Nero and EZ-cd creator for both music and VCD. As a side note, I have tested CDRW on other players, and it only works on them if it is a brand new disk, no erases.

N/A No rating Comments: I tried again, this time with Kensiko ("el cheapo") CD-Rs, silver, 80 min. and I get beautiful video and a time display, however, no sound! This is truly weird because I get sound on my computer and my Sega Dreamcast (so I assume my VCD's are good), and the Sony unit says right on the unit that it's a Video CD player. I tried all the settings I could think of and still no audio. I don't know if maybe this is a copy-protection scheme to prevent use of CD-Rs or what.
