Only thing I don't like about this player is that it can't read DVD-MP3.
Otherwise is perfect for my needs.

My first standalone DVD-player and I'm pleased with the quality. Doesn't have composite video but does come with S-Video output port. Seems to play MP3s well, loads the contents of the folder on tv and can be used like a jukebox. Vcd's play fine and SVCD IS possible with the "header trick" (plays in full colour on mine, extracted SVCD mpeg converted into mpeg-1 (non-standard) with TMPGEnc,and VCD burnt as a non-standard vcd in Nero). I have used generic(no-name bulk spindle) cd-r media and so far everything has played without problems. A little pricey for some of the features but overall a good player that looks trendy. An easy system to move to different rooms. Not a High-end player but well made and functional.

Plays DVDs (of course), VCD, mp3, CDR, DVD-R. Does not play SVCDs (created with Nero SVCD template).
Does not have PAL/NTSC switch (made for North American market only).
Otherwise very nice and stylish, inexpensive (for Sony) player.

Excellent player! Handles VCD very well and WILL play SVCDs if you use the vcd header trick listed on this site. DVDs look great. Haven't tested dvd-r or any variation of, as that is out of my range right now. Does everything I want it to do.

VCDs - YES

SVCDs - YES (with header trick)

DVDs - Of course (and they look better than most other players that play vcd/svcd)

I've been through Apexs, a Norcent, toshibas, Initials (the walmart portables), and jvcs. This player blows the rest away.

A cheap, stylish player that flirts with portability and has plenty of outputs. Plays almost everything I throw at it except for DVD-R's; I've tried a few and they don't work at all.

I use Memorex DVD media which I have found to work very well; the DVD-R media I've used is off-brand, so that might be the problem, but I suspect not.

DVD-MP3 discs do not play in this player.

I made XVCD using TMPGEnc 'coz i wanted to fit 129 min movie (Moulin Rouge!) on one CD. Used method described here on vcdhelp.com (Beginners Guide To Fit A Movie Of Any Length On One CD) and set audio to 128 Kbps, video to 738 Kbps. The source was 701 MB DivX avi file so i extracted audio first using Virtual Dub and loaded audio and video separately into TMPGEnc. Burned using Nero 5.5.7.2. at 16X (highest my burner can do) on Philips CD-R 80 min (Silverspeed 32X). Plays straight away with no freezing or anything. Player will play both commercially and home made VCD and XVCD regardless of CD brand. My player is U.K. model (Pal standard) so i converted my NTSC DivX to Pal Mpeg by loading vcd(Pal).mcf template into TMPGEnc. Any problems, questions or comments - please feel free to contact me at elinspeter@hotmail.com

Comments:
My first player was a Samsung 709, which plays DVDs well, but nothing in any other format. So I decided to get an Apex 1100W from Walmart. While that player was good, it had trouble playing some of my store-bought DVDs, namely ones with 3 hours or more of video on them. I had both a Benny Hill and The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, which it would not play beyond the first hour. With the remote being a little archaic to use, I decided to return it and get a Panasonic. I found out after getting the unit home, that while it played VCDs, the quality it played them was so poor (pixelated) that I couldn't stand it. Besides that, the manual said that the player would only play certain DVD-Rs recorded a certain way (namely on a Panasonic recorder) so I returned that one after about 3 days. The Panasonic did have WMP audio support, but all my music is in MP3 and I wasn't about to spend the time converting it all to WMP.

I then spent some time looking around for a player that had the features I wanted and while looking, I stumbled across the Sony DVP-PQ1. This player looked cool and it was compact. It also had some top Sony features (like their Precision Drive 2) and it had MP3 support, yet was inexpensive.

This player is built with excellent quality, and inserting a disk is as easy as inserting a CD in your CD-Walkman. It does not have a front display, but that's ok, neither did the Apex 1100, but it does have an onscreen display. Plus, this player has Playback Memory which remembers your preferred settings for up to 40 discs including Audio, Subtitles, Video EQ, Digital Noise Reduction, Digital Cinema Sound™ modes, and Camera Angles.

It plays the video-CDs very smooth compared to the Panasonic, and probably equal to the Apex (which did a great job on VCDs). It does not play SVCD, which I'm dissappointed, but I read someplace that the European version does play SVCD. The remote is logical and has 4-arrows with an enter button in the middle, so you can easily scroll through menus without having to press a function key like the Apex 1100 remote had. Plus, the remote is RF instead of IR, although it seems you still have to point it toward the player.

The CD-Rs that I've tried are generic Pro-Media and Khypermedia and Memorex, and the CD-RWs I've tried are Vivastar and Memorex. It seems to have no problems reading the cheap stuff, and I see no reason it wouldn't read the good stuff.

Store bought DVDs have played flawlessly and there has been no skipping or jumping or pixelation like was sometimes found in my Samsung.

Overall, I'm satisfied with this player (my 4th DVD player) and it plays what I wanted it to: DVDs, DVD-R, DVD-RW, VCDs and MP3s.
