I use it using the HDMI output to a 42" Panasonic plasma HDTV. The picture is very clear and detailed. Color also is very natural. I am a video editor and can see the difference in detail when encoding DVDs at different compression rates. Very impressed with the picture and the seeking speeds when navigating... even with DL DVDs it is supper fast.
I had a problem with the door not opening within the first month and they replaced the unit. Have not had any problems since. Wouldd buy again. |

Nice PQ good SACD> v.good sound. This is a player with HDMI output. Less advantage to the digital output if your display has an exemplary upscaler, but slightly less grain.
Unfortunately, a troublesome player. Most problems fixed with firmware (like stuck drawer). Latest and hopefully last problem is inermittent or no HDMI output.
Note: This model is not listed under HDMI output when searching for players on this website.

| There are serious problems with this player. I am returning mine. Do a web search on "Sony DVP-NS975V tray locked". Many folks are returning these players or getting refunds. |

I only "upgraded" to free up an analog HD connection, but this player does a fine job.
In a previous post, I returned a Samsung HD841 for (among other limitations) the DVI scaler not respecting 4:3 shaped material - it always stretched it rather than showing side bars. This Sony player using HDMI (and an $100 HDMI to DVI cable) works fine and has a menu item for 4:3 where I could select "normal" rather than "full" for my own projects (DVfootage, AdobePremiere 6.5 edit, Pinnacle Impression Pro authoring, DVD+R discs).
Picture quality was excellent under progressive/HDMI into my Sony KF50XBR800 50" LCD projector (720p native), but actually no improvement over my Sony NS315 using component (analog) outputs. It is good but since DVD is only 480x720 anyway, will never look like broadcast HDTV.
For best picture on "pause", do change "auto" to "frame".
The .jpg still photo facility is of limited usefulness. Eight of 76 large photos on a CD-RW failed to show a thumbnail in the "navigator" and more failed to show when a good thumbnail was selected. Furthurmore some tests showed the scaler was composing an area that was 4:3 in shape and only at the DVD resolution of 480 lines deep. Material wider than 4:3 (like scans from 35mm) did not show wider on screen.
