| Warning: the version sold in Hong Kong (and possibly elsewhere in Asia) does NOT support PAL PROGRESSIVE. Only NTSC Progressive. I have confirmed this with Sony. Don't know why they would disable such a good feature. |

I seem to be the exception in giving this model a relaatively low score.
Although truly FANTASTIC picture quality (and I must emphasise truly SUPERB), it is let down by it's intolerable sensitivity to bad discs. I have had so many problems viewing ORIGINAL DVD-videos I have rented out from internet sites and from high street shops where the movie would freeze and then give up and so skip to the next chapter. I was watching the Hitcher the other day (original) and it did this all the way even at the end of the thriller. Having said that there have been a few discs I have been able to watch without any problems with freezing and skipping.
The other major let down is it's truly abismal sound quality.
One of the problems with the sound quality is as if the vocal frequencies were considerably at lowerd dB levels and unclear making it nearly always always necessary for me to watch my films having to read subtitles. Partly also due to crap american accent and partly due to my being a little hard of hearing, but then I don't seem to have difficulty understanding speech on american movies broadcast on TV.
Externally very basic looking in appearance -not sexy looking at all.

A fantastic player with superb picture quality. Audio is slightly let down as it doesn't pack a big punch on the bass side of things.
Other then that this is a fantastic player from Sony. |

With Nero I have tried different media and have had no problem except with some "cheaper" DVD-Rs that I happen to get. The more expensive "name-brand" DVDs were ok. However, with an older, much less sophisiticated machine (Samsung -- I can read the cheap DVD-R just fine, so I suspect it is not the burn process but the quality of the DVD itself which fails some startup checks in the sophisticated, otherwise great Sony player).
Otherwise the and sound is superb, and I couldn't be more pleased with the look and oveall quality of the video. |

| This player has played everyhing I have tried in it being VCD with non standard screen sizes It plays every SVCD I have made and most of them are non standard sound bit rates. I tried many ohter players some would play svcd and not fast forward them some wouldnot play them if the sound bitrate was lower than standard. I am amazed by the picture and sound qualitythat comes out of this player. I tried dozens of other players mainly cheap players and some name brand players and noe I tried comes near to this one |

Plays SVSD no problem. Plays DVDs with a bad scratches. But doesn't like fingerprints, well neither do I. Picture quality is outstanding just right for my projector (Video DAC 12bit/108MHz). Player has many useful functions(displ text, noise remover, manual pic settings, ...). Plays all regions dvds.
On the other side it does not plays Menu form SVCD. |

I have purchased a Sony DVP-NS730P and have been told this works for multi-region, even although the manual says it doesn't. Problem is that I intend taking this DVD overseas with me but until then I do not have any DCD's (from other regions) to check if it actually can play discs from any region. Can you confirm if this actually is a multi-region DVD?

This is a great player
Has both PAL and NTSC progressive, so a SuperBit DVD on this on a large projected image looks absolutely suberb.
The MP3 playback worked without a hitch, long names were shown but ID3 tags aren't used
I bought the region 4 version which I was told was multi region modified.
Chucked in XXX region 1 (which is RCE) and worked without problems.
Tried one of SVCDs but it only played about 4 or 5 seconds before stopping. Read about the header trick and reburnt one - which then played all the way through without any audio problems.
So apart from the fact that it doesn't play standard SVCDs unless you use the header trick, this is a very good all rounder especially for those who want progressive scan PAL as well as NTSC. The best thing was the price $AU299
It's got a couple of great little extras in it for improving image quality - like block noise removal and edge enhancement. I would have give it a 10 apart from the SVCD problem |
