I couldn't understand why some of my backup disks wouldn't play. After re-reading the book, this player will only play discs with the same region code AND will NOT play discs written using packet writing mode. After changing programs, and not using packet writing mode, all discs copied have played without hesitation. Have used Nero 6 to copy. Radio Shack has a good lense cleaner for when the lense gets dirty, bout $25.

Had this player for a little over a year, and it worked great till recently playing my DVD-R's.

But recently its started almost totally freezing, and not playing. Found that its totally due to overheating. I cant lift the player up and it works great.

Pretty upset about this, and no clue on any way to fix it.

Ne1 else had a problem like this???

Comments:
I wanted a player that could play the maximum number of formats for the least amount of money, this seems to be that player. The only feature I'm "missing" is the ability to play Divx, but the players that do have that feature seemed to be priced a lot higher.

Player before this was a Norcent and seemed to play everything this would (excepting Divx), as the player had full functionality for less than two months, even at $30 (amazon.com) I felt the machine was a waste. I found at least one other listing on this site that had about the same capabilities, but was commented as being the 'next Norcent', so I bought the Sony instead.

The only feature I miss between this player, the self-destructing Norcent and the Apex I had a few years before that is time jump on SVCD. You can enter in time to "go to" on a DVD, but not other media. On the other hand it remembers where I left off on multiple discs, so if the 'time jump' was needed say to resume a point after I determined the disc needed cleaning, it's no problem really. The Sony will remember 5 discs exactly where you left off though I've never needed this feature for more than one.

This is capable of Progressive scan, I got this feature only because I suspected a higher quality player... it is! Even using the standard RCA cables, the picture quality is much higher than with the Norcent or Apex. This may be a trick by the player... perhaps a filter the video goes through before being viewed, however I am not able to 'see' the difference between a copied DVD and a retail DVD on this player like I could on the Norcent (DP300 if you're curious... avoid that player). Quality seems just as high on either disc.

I'm told this player will accept flash firmware updates, but Sony has not released any that I am aware of. This player also has an automatic power off feature ~ a powerful feature I believe as my last two players seemed to have died from overheating.. while not in use? When pro-scan is on, a cool blue light glows on the front of the player. When the player is off, it is difficult to tell which side is the drawer and which is the display or if you're looking at a very large drawer for a disc changer. That's not a feature, just something I noticed when I opened the box... free upgrade? wha?

Oh! Almost forgot. If the drawer is open and you press "play", this box doesn't yell at you about closing the door or 'no disc', it just closes the door and plays. I consider this a feature as most players would rather insult your intelligence than simply do what you tell it to as this one does. I'm very impressed with this player overall. I should also mention that it has both R and L analogue audio outputs since neither the Apex nor the Norcent that I used to have would have more than one audio output. That's not a big deal except that I have a mono TV and some movies wouldn't have all the sound if the wrong channel was being used for it (no longer!).

Comments:
Not a fancy player, but has done the job reasonably well up until now. After six months of moderate use, it has started pixelating on all VCD/SVCDs I've tried. It used to play them all with no trouble at all. Also, right from the start its DVD playback has been good but not perfect. Some movies have this weird "frame overlap" effect which is noticeable during scene changes. Also subtitles often appear jittery. It has read scratched and dirty discs with no trouble at all, but I haven't tested any since the VCD/SVCD pixelation problems started.

It's possible the lens has just gotten dirty, but I'm disappointed in how soon this player has started to go bad. Overall, I'd say it wasn't worth the price.

This thing is awesome! Finally I can play some of my princo -rw's I burnt that none of my other Sony dvd players would not play. Princo Ritek Verbatim Fuji played everything I threw at it.

I thought all Sony players were uncapable of playing dvd-r and -rw's. This one proves that wrong.

This wonderfull player has replaced my old Sony DVP-S360. I started backing up my DVD collection. I want to play the backup copy instead of the original to keep the dirty dust and scratches away.

The old S360 had trouble playing DVD+-R's. This new 725P works perfect. I highly recommend!

FujiFilm +R and -R play just like the original. The discs are made on a pioneer DVR-107D with the firmware upgrade that allows 8x burning on 4x media.

I've just bought the player and it seems very nice. Played a lot of different cd-r/cd-rw (in good shape and in bad shape either) media for vcd's and svcd's. It has very good picture quality.

The only fault I've found is that it does not recognizes PBC (mode) in SVCD's ?!?!?! It means that all the motion menu's (and the regular ones) that I've spent a lot of time making in VCDEasy are useless, the device plays it as a separeted track and ignores all chapter insert points. I'm gonna make more tests, but does anyone had the same problem ??? (Please giv me a hint).

Thanks from Brazil,

Grigoletto

I had to get a player that would play ANY type of dvdr/cdr disc. Where I live, we have so many stores that buy bulk blank dvd's from asia, and I guess the quality is low on them. So my burned discs were starting to fail on my panasonic er-50. -r and +r.

I picked up the sony725 after reading through this site, and like everyone says, it will play anything. the player is very forgiving when it comes to the type of burned media tou use, and I have not had a single problem.

This player replaces a Pioneer 525 that i had, and it does so perfectly.

If you burn your opwn music or movies, then this is worth its (now) cheap price.

This player has done all we hoped and more! It plays DVD+R(W) flawlessly on every media I've tried.

Additionally the player 'remembers' where you were on different movies. This is great with a 2 year old in the house. As we switch disk (even several times) the player picks up where that movie left off last time.

Overall extremely happy with the player.

This player has played everything that I could through at it. All DVD+/-R media have worked great. 2hr SVCD on 3 CD-Rs plays excellent. Block noise reduction sure works to reduce blockiness on low-bitrate SVCDs. Only disk that would not play was burnt with pinicle studio 8 and did not play in my JVC either (Cheap electrohome dvd player worked almost perfectly). Burnt the same compilation with NERO 6 and worked flawlessly. Audio quality is amazing Suround reproduction thru my 2 channel Yamaha Receiver/ B&W speakers with any Dolby digital 5.1 downsampled to stereo.
I always rip/encode with Shrink DVD, burn with Nero 6 on a LG 4040B writer firmware A302 @ 4X. I have used Princo -R 4x, Maxell +R 4X, Memorex -R 4X, Memorex -R 2X.

I have tried Memorex DVD-RW and DVD+RW. They record fine, but if I use Pinnacle Studio 8, either to record and compile and burn, or record and compile and burn with Roxio, the DVDs will not play in this Sony. However, if I record with Roxio Easy CD&DVD, the DVD+RW will work in the Sony and a combo DVD in a small TV set.

I cannot get my I/O burner to burn Sony DVD-R discs. I am not sure if the problem is the Sony player will not read certain DVDs burned by certain programs or what? I sure wish these companies would get it together and develop a standard format we could all use, without having to buy $200 worth of every type blank disc to test! Glenn

I purchased this DVD player yesterday after receiving the LiteOn DVD +/- RW 4x for Christmas. I had an older Toshiba that didn't play any burned media. I did my research and purchased the DVP-NS725P. It is the same as the 425, but it has optical audio outputs, which I needed. I have tried R and R/W and both work perfectly in this player. So far I have used a generic brand DVD, and a TDK +R 4X. I have had no freezing or audio problems whatsoever. I am very happy with it.

Excellent player!!

I bought this unit to replace a crappy Toshiba player. This Sony has yet to give me any problems. I'm using a Pioneer DVR-A06 burner and Nero 6 to burn. This Sony has worked flawlessly with Memorex DVD+R and DVD-R media. If your main use for a DVD player is to play copies/backups of DVD movies then you can't go wrong with this unit!

I was really disappointed by the fact that this player is NOT capable of playing PAL DVDs ("ALL" region).

Other than that it is a very good player. Played all my home-burned DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+RW (all Memorex) and VCDs. Most of those disks wouldn't play in CyberHome 300 or Apex 1110W, but have no problem whatsoever on this Sony player.

Even rented commercial DVDs that would choke CyberHome, played perfectly fine.

Too bad that I have to return it anyway - I need PAL as well as NTSC.

BTW, none of the remote control hacks worked for me either.
