| With the lack of DivX or Xvid, or any .avi disc playback aside, this is the best DVD player I have ever owned. It plays old, scratched up discs with ease. I had been using the ever popular Philips DVP-642 for the use of it's .avi and multi-format playback features for the past year or so. Then I got sick of the DVP's inability to play the most common disc types with even the smallest scratch and the inability to play Dual Layer Discs (which weren't cheap b.t.w.) [DVD+DL]. So I decided to try it on the good old Sony DVP-NS715P and I realized how much clearer, crisper, and just overall better the picture on it was. And it also played the Dual Layered recorded discs (DVD+DL) with no problem. If only it had the ability to play .Avi files etc. Then it would be ridiculous! |

| Have had this player for over a year now. Has never failed me and my backups. Only time it won't play backups (-R, -RW, +R, +RW) is when I have a bad burn. Has played every type of DVDR I have thrown at it... Ritek, TDK, Ricoh, Prodisc, Maxell. Only reason I can't give it a 10 is the lack of DVI or HDMI output. Overall though, very happy with this player! |

My very first DVD burn went smooth, was so excited try it out. Plextor Burner with Roxio.
Put in this Sony and it started to play, but every 3-5 minutes it freezes and you have to mess with the Step or FF/RW to get it to go again. Not good. |

| As a follow-up to my earlier post stating that recently this player was haning up on DVD-R media. I had read that someone else had unplugged his player for awhile when this happened and that helped. Well, I tried this and my player now does work perfectly again. |

| I bought this player because it specifically stated it would play both DVD+-R as well as DVD+-RW. I've had the player for over a year now and could not be happier. It has never had any problems reading any of the discs I have burned (DVD+-R, DVD+RW, CDR(W). Have used Ritek and Memorex (CMC Mag) with no problems. Great player! |

| It does not play Phillips blank media DVD+R 2.4x DVDs. NO PLAYER YET HAS BEEN ABLE TO PLAY THESE BURNED DVDs!!! WHAT THE HELL!!! Ive been through 4 DVD players in the past month. I have over 150 of these dvds to watch and none play fully through w/o skipping. |

| Plays both CVD And SVCD subtitles, I have purchased this player and using nero and tmpgenc plus have tested almost every possible CD. DVD-R/RW discs also work fine, have not tested DVD+R/RW or DVD-Audio. I have spent a great deal finding how to use programs and things that are compatible. Also VBR MPEG2 work very well. This player has one of the best MPEG2 decoders I have seen. |

| My brother this dvd player 8 months ago and it plays perfectly all burned dvd's yet!! I have tried original dvd movies, dvd+r's, dvd-r's, dvd-rw's, and they all have played flawlessly. I have used brands like: Fuji 4x DVD+R, Memorex 4x DVD+R, Fuji 4x DVD-R, Fuji DVD-RW, Imation 4x DVD-R, Ritek 4x DVD-R, Ritek 2.4x DVD+R. I use for burning Nero software (latest version 6.1 i think), also used DVD Shrink 3.1, DVD X Copy Platinum. This player NEVER has "frozen" while in play, i have tried many brands, including other Sony models, Playstation 2 and Toshiba, but none have worked like the NS715p. Unfortunately this dvd player apparently has been discontinued or something, cause i havent been able to find it for sale anymore. |

For playing DVD's on progresime mode this Players is outstanding!. It used to play SVCD's and VCD's for the first 10-12 months that I had it, and then sudently would not played them any more. Now it recognizes the SDVC's as before but will only play SVCD's though the past the first 30 minutes or so then stops and gets hang up (like it can't find propper tracking). Powering down & up or stoping & re-starting solves nothing. I tried a DVD lens cleaner but it had no effect. Still plays DVD's and DVD-R (Memorex Media) supperbly, but not SVCD's. I really like this player but now use an Apex 2100 for SVCD watching.

| I give this player a ( because IT DOESNT SEEM TO PLAY MP3's on a dvd. I have used nero6, i have used the suggested winoncd and burn them as an mpeg2, and also sonic's recordnow DX I have not had a single success. Just 2 months ago before I got my pioneer A06 I would had giving this player a 10 but now its a 9. I have 3 other dvd players. Apex660-great because you can change the firmware and background image. Apex 1500 got it free with 65" widescreen Mitsu. HDTV and a samsung dvd which SUXZ they should stick to tvs. The samsung doesnt play any vcd's whatsoever and the dvd's sometime stutters. BY FAR THE BEST PIC QUALITY out of these is the sony in progressive scan mode. Out of this mode the apex 5131 wgich i just sold recently had a comparable picture. This is on my 65" tv. When you blow a pic up that big you can certainly tell a difference in quality. THIS SONY PLAYS EVERYTHING YOU THROW AT IT when it comes to cd-r/rw, dvd-+ r/rw media. I have tried PIODATA, Verbatim, memorex, sony, and some dvd-r that came with my liteon dvd burner. ALL plays flawlessly. For compatibility I give it a 10. No doubts there. |

I am very pleased with this player. It plays all my VCD and XVCD on CD-R and CD-RW my APEX AD-1100D had problems with. I found an 'open box' deal on the internet for less than $100US...can't beat that! I have found that it gets a little warm in my entertainment center and sometimes skips if it gets too hot. I set up a small fan behind it that comes on when the receiver is turned on. Haven't had any problems since! I wish it had an MP3 shuffle mode. It plays everything I need it to and it looks really good! Highly recommended.
Side note - it also plays DVD-RW recorded in the 'VR' mode....might come in handy for some people. |

| Before purchasing this DVD player I created a DVD-R on my computer to take to the store and test. The Sony played the disc with no problems. When I went home and tried out the DVD on the machine that built it, the computer couldn't play the disk. The Sony was able to play something that the computer couldn't. In addition, I have three daughters who have a problem keeping thier fingers off the disks. The Sony has had no problems reading disks that contain numeroud finger prints all over them. Excellent error handling and recovery. |

I just bought a Sony DVP-NS715P, well it does really wonderful things...Anything I tried worked.
The only thing I really dislike is the Region Code Hacking....it's nearly impossible, well, you can, but you have to install 2 additional chips...it will cost you about 100$....So do the calculation : 125+100 = 225$....hmmm really too expensive ....
So if you don't need a multi region feature ...go for it... otherwise choose another one. (I'll have to backup all my Zone 2 Dvds in order to remove the RCE protection :( )

| The player will not play any rental DVD movies that have scratches. It has been like this from when it was new, it is now 6 months old. I thought it was the DVDs problem but now it has started to skip on new DVDs also. I've had trouble with other Sony equipment in the past and this was their last chance from me. I'll definitely be looking at other companies with my next purchase. |

It plays SVCDs... sort of... sometimes. Lately whenever I burn a BIN/CUE it plays it for somewhere between 5 and 30 minutes, then stutters slowly for a moment, then stops. If I let it sit long enough, the "dirty disc" error message appears. Stopping and restarting: no dice. Pause, rewind, FF: doesn't help. Burned SVCDs with VCDEasy, Nero, and Fireburner on Taiyo Yuden CDs at sloooooow burn speeds whenever possible: it STILL screws up in the player.
But I love the remote and the player is great with DVDs. The remote is the only thing keeping me from swapping this with the cheap old JVC 300BK I have upstairs, which will play just about anything I throw at it. |

Finally purchased a DVD burner (Sony DRU510A) but have been using this player now for over a year. Plays VCD and SVCD burned on Memorex CD-R. Plays CompUSA DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+RW. Haven't tried DVD-RW yet.
DVDs burned with Sonic MyDVD, Nero, RecordNow DX and Pinnacle Studio 8 have all played with no problem.

| Bought for SVCD and DVD (rentals). Solid on SVCD where others were not....although I seem to have lost the chapters so I can't skip through an SVCD's disks chapters. Great feature called 'replay' is an auto jump back of about 7 seconds to replay the last segment....great if you missed a line!!! Haven't seem much to complain about and plays all SVCDs on a variety of mediums... |

| Update to my review from 7/2002. The player worked great until about a week ago when it stopped playing audio CDs either burned or pressed. DVDs still play fine. Lasted about 8 months. Haven't even played that many CDs. Now need a new player. |

| When I bought this player it was about $200. Easily, the best $200 I have ever spent. I am very staisfied with lots of the features It does a lot of great things my previous player did not, and its a lot easier to operate. It plays VCDs and SVCDs great...fantastic picture and sound. I have only tried Imation and Memorex DVD-R and DVD+R, but both of them played flawlessly. If you are looking for a great machine without spending an arm and a leg, this is it.
