The image is scaled to 1080i on my 720p Philips LCD (5320 I got for 750$ @ Target of all places) over HDMI. The image is superb. Had the same problem with DTS, and found out the DTS sound needs to be turned on, since the decoder is not turned on by default. If you go into the setup menu with the player turned on with no DVD in the tray, you can change your settings to change your sound from PCM to DTS. My only gripe is HDCP is screwing with my system setup because my TV has only one HDMI input, and my A/V receiver can only handle composite. I am looking for a way to disable HDCP to be able to send 1080i over composite. I had gotten a Samsung 841 because I had read of the ability to turn off HDCP, but it was fried when i turned it on. I returned it, got another 841 and did not quite like it. The Sony has way better image over HDMI. Now, If i could get it to work over composite, that'd be perfect.

have no problems with cropping of picture as stated on some other sites. No down sampling as stated from review above after I set the parameters. Great picture using the HDMI into my HD Panasonic plasma screen. The Cream Reunion concert and Concert For George, both filmed in HD looked and sounded great. What a great deal de this DVD player was delivered from Amazon for $98.

If you looking for a very good up scaling DVD for HD this is a very good DVD player using the HDMI. Makes my dvd’s look HD. The only drawback is that the player down samples your 5.1 and DTS to 2 channel PCM. So what is that all about!!! If you have a nice 6-channel surround system you will not be happy. If you want a great HD Picture and you only have the TV speakers than you will be very happy. I’m taking it back to buy the Sony DVP-NS90V. This player will play your 5.1 and DTS without down sampling to a 2 channel PCM. And can only be found online.

bought samsung 841 on clearance, loved it, the remote sucked, did not have features i wanted. saw sony on sale, returned samsung for it - best thing i did. this sony player is outstanding when used via hdmi, the picture really does look extermely close to HD. if your reading this, yuor in the market for buying a hdmi player, look no further - i know you need to pay extra for the hdmi cable (it is not included - but it online for 20 bucks) - it is worth everything you spend, I have it hooked up to my HT projecter, the sony makes the picture look like a 120" plasma - it really is that amazing, tons of features and an easy remote, GET IT, you wont be sorry.
