WMA CVD? $? over 1 year 9 of 10 DVD-WMA Comments: A great little player this one plays all the DVD+R & +RWs that I have thrown at it and recently got a Toshiba XS-32 HDD/DVD-R/-RW recorder for the second room. Now I have a problem the +RW/+R do not play in the Toshiba and it seems that although the -RW's play in the Sony the Verbatiam DatalifePlus DVD-R's that I have just bought make the Sony say "Disk Dirty C - 013" ... err... might have to try a few other brands.

N/A 6 of 10 DivX Comments: This player just wont play any DVD-R discs I throw at it! I've tried: - Maxell DVD-R - Bulkpaq DVD-R - Whitelable DVD-R - Datawrite DVD-R And none of them will play! It works fine with DVD-RW and DVD+R media. Oh well I'm gonna have to keep trying...

N/A No rating Comments: Having the 700p and using imation and memorex cdr, xvcd can be formatted at 720x480 res and 224 audio. To make it simpler, download a xvcd template for tmpgenc so you don't have to customize the settings each time. Open the template in word and change res settings because xvcd standard isn't 720x480. Save the new settings and you have a dvd quality template for xvcds. Max bitrate for these settings = 2500.

CVD? $350 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: Great Player ... very good Video Quality. Solid Chassis , it seems like a well-worked HI-FI component. PROB - I usually used THAT'S RIGHT DVD-R : best compatibility even with the PS2 , but they hardly plays on SONY NS700 ... if data on the disk are near the Capacity limit ( for Example 4.3 gb ) the sony says CANNOT READ DISK ! No probs with PRINCO 2x and others tested. regarding 5.1 decoder ... great sounds on REAR and FRONT but quite low volume on CENTER (Voice Channel) even configuring audio properties. (Comparing to my old Cyberhome AD528 in which Voice was very clear). VCD and SVCD great PlayBack .... good image quality ... Replaced in Italy by the 705 model . But I found 2 in EXPERT store. So far a very good Player ... I'll be back after future testing ....

Great image and sound quality, even using the integrated DD/DTS decoder. I've played VCD/SVCD/KVCD/CD-R/CD-RW/SACD and everything works flawlessly. The only thing I don't like is the layer change: in some movies, it pauses during 0.5". I've viewed The Others (DTS), Vidocq (DTS, slow layer change), In the Bedroom, K-Pax, Lord of the Rings (standard edition) and everything perfect. I have the DVD connected to a Technics EH780 mini Hi-Fi with 5 RCA and I can use the Sony remote to pump up the volume of the Hi-Fi. Besides, the player has DCS (Digital Cinema System) for some surround effects. In Spain, this player includes two SACD with samples in Stereo and Multichannel. Setup is very easy thanks to the Quick Setup option. It's the best player in this range of prize, IMHO.

Many (non standards) vcd or svcd disks don't work on my NS700V. I have to change many disks of my collection, working fine on my old Samsung... :-(( It's not a very open product! Sorry Mr Sony, I've dreamed it!

N/A 10 of 10 Comments: I have the DVP-NS700V. Superb player, plays everything I need it to, including SVCD, which the book it says it doesn't. Have had excellent results with VCD, SVCD with TMPEGenc and Nero and DVD-R, DVD+R(W)with TMPEGenc and authored with MGI Videowave 5, Ulead DVD Factory, Spruce UP and Nero, using Monkey Media/Memorex and Verbatim. I believe Sony are to dis-continue or replace this model, so has been reduced in price in recent weeks. I bought mine from Jungle.com for £219 and worth every penny.

MP3 WMA CVD? $300 N/A 9 of 10 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: Superb video and audio quality using the built-in DD/DTS decoders and RGB output. Even tried a rented DVD with lots of dirt and scratches on it... flawless playback! (In my opinion the most important reason to buy a DVD player) Note I have the NS700V model (PAL) which does not have Progressive Scanning but does support SVCD as well as VCD in PAL and NTSC format. Quality is a lot worse than DVD though (duh). I used TMPGenc/VCDgear/VCDimager(GUI)/CDRDAO(Xduplicator) on Philips CDRW (4 speed) to burn (S)VCD. XVCD and XSVCD seem to work but there are certain limitations to the resolution and bitrate.

CVD? $250 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: First of all must say that my model is NS700V. Great player, I bought by 299€ it after returning a Philips 951 of 420€. SACD sounds great. I've played 2 SVCD withou any problem (max 2.600 bit rate). Very good picture quality and 5.1 ch decoded output is excellent. A bit slow when changing layer, but always succeed in it, never freezes. It is slim, solid constructed, the possibilities of menu are almost infinite. Very happy with it after 3 days.

The main thing people forget is the mpeg decoder itself and the whole Sony range have more 'forgiving' decoders than some out there (eg some Pioneers esp.). If you have a glitch on a disc from poor encoding the Sony won't go nuts - it'll just carry on playing fine. The quality is excellent. Rich, contrasty and vibrant with oodles of detail as though its lasering the picture out of the glass of the tv screen. Man! Compatible with DVD+ and DVD- formats - very useful. DVD-Rs whether in Mpeg2 or Mpeg2 SIF(352x288) - are happy. You can get in BLACK as well as silver. Case/facia is metallic not plastic - and very nice drawer mechanism - feels like the whole thing will last forever. Qualifications for saying the above: This is my 12th DVD player and I haven't changed it for a lo-o-o-o-ng time..... David Walpole, UK

CVD? $350 N/A 9 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: I bought this great dvd player after extensive search over the last few months (thanks to vcdhelp) and I want to say I am over the moon with it. Actually, it was always the dvd player I had in mind since last year and sometimes love at first sight pays off!!! I couldn't get any of the cheap take-it-all dvd players mentioned here on vcdhelp, so in the end I went for what seemed like the best I could afford. I have tested it for dvd only and it works flawlessly with dvd-r, dvd-rw (even cheap brands) and dvd+rw (for those who care but I don't really, I hate the companies behind this unneeded format). It also works very well with videocd on cd-r (el cheapo brand), I haven't tested it on cd-rw but the box says it takes them. The picture quality is very very good, and you don't really need the extra features like Block Reduction (which don't do much anyway). There are plenty of useful features like bit rate display, a disc browser and various settings for audio and video out. Of course, there is a built-in DTS/Dolby Digital encoder which will be handy as soon as I get some decent extra speakers (and a new room?), but most of all it playes Super Audio CDs which are amazing. If you hook it to a good Hi-fi system the difference is remarkable: sounds are really cristal and the overall musical presence very life-like. Since I believe this model is on the way out of the Sony catalogue and currently enjoying price-drops, I suggest any serious picture and audio lover to get it while they last. Bought in Milan for euro 370.

The time it takes to make a recorded DVD+RW is 18 minutes for a 100 min movie. Just make sure that DvdRipper and IfoEdit are used to produce the copy to be burned finally with Nero 5578

SVCD videobitrate=2450 & audiobitrate=192 stereo plays without problem. Unfortunely player doesn't plays MP3...

N/A 8 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: Don't be confused by the simmilar name and identical front panel - NS700V is different from NS700P. It is distributed in PAL countries, there is no 480P support but it plays VCDs and SVCDs quite well and it is combined with SACD player. There are some limitations with (X)SVCDs : Probably no menus Cannot skip inside a single track correctly Total bitrate ( audio + video ) must not exceed 2700kb/s ( SVCD standard ). In fact it is possible to exceed it temporarily using VBR thanks to internal read buffer but only for 1 or 2 seconds and a lower bitrate section must follow. Inside the bitrate limits it is able to play any combination of resolution ( e.g. 384x576 ) and audio/video bitrate. Good for experimenting with CD-RWs. I like this player. The only disadvantage - it cannot play MP3s.
