Comments:
I bought this specifically because of the Precision Drive and its claim to play DVD+-R so that I could review my DVD library. 3/4 of the way through any particular disc, the image would freeze and pick back up many frames later. It would do this on scratch-free archival discs and newly burned discs. It's pretty sad when a $30 Apex outperforms a Sony. I guess I'm going back to my Apex (which doesn't have the pure DTS compatibility I wanted).

Comments:
I already have a Sony NS50P, which played all my DVD's -R/RW, +R/RW, created with Movie Edit Pro. I wanted another DVD for another TV, and learned the 50P was replaced by the 55P, and ordered it.

I tried DVD's of the different formats in the new player, but after the first menu page, it would stop being able to navigate the menus. The chapter pictures and test showed, but no highlight. Play wouldn't work. Sometimes sub-menu button would return to the video.

It can play commercial DVD's, and I agree with other comments that the picture is great.

But since it couldn't play my DVD's, I returned it.

Also tried their DVP-NS75H, with the same results.

I've since been able to get another 50P, which can play my DVD's.

Comments:
Bought this player as a replacement for a Panasonic S35 which would not play CD's anymore.

For Can$100 not bad. Plays all the formats I need it to (CDR, JPEG, MP3, DVD+/-R). Has played all the burnt media I have tried to date. Will play a JPEG slideshow & MP3 simultaneously. Also has CDText.

Opted for this unit as it supports 12bit video over most players in this price range that are 10bit only.

I had a hard time finding a player with random/shuffle play, which I need as I play a lot of music through my DVD. This unit will shuffle CD's but not MP3's.

Unit is unobtrusive looking & is available in silver or black. Picture quality is excellent. The Remote is adequate - although some options have to be used via the monitor/TV Screen.

For the price I would have expected it to be DivX compatible , but that is not the case. This was not a big issue for me as I find DivX to be lesser quality and DVD+R's are only 0.30c each!

I hope this unit lasts until the BlueRay / HD-DVD battle is over & we can enjoy the benefits of true HD on reasonable priced players.

Comments:
Picture quality is good, and it plays some generic brand DL DVD+Rs that my previous sony would not recognize. There is an annoying humming noise as soon as the player is turned and the video select of the TV is set to the DVD player. This player is replacing another sony model, using the same audio/video cables, I never had a problem with noise on the older set. Sony's webpage support had some suggestions about resolving the noise, I tried them all without success.

Comments:
DVP-NS55P seems to be the same as the now being discontinued DVP-NS50P:
: same features & functions
: same front panel display
: same on-screen display
: same user manual (except for a few minor changes)
: same remote control (RMT-D175A)
: available in the same colors, black or silver

Differences from DVP-NS50P:
: 1.14" (29cm) shallower front-to-back
: no PAUSE button on player console
: PREVIOUS, NEXT buttons on console are larger
: output connectors positioned more towards center of rear panel

USAGE: Mostly for movies & TV shows released on pressed DVDs; some camcorder video transferred to recordable DVD (bitset to DVD-ROM); occassional music and/or JPEG images. Acquired the DVP-NS55P to replace/supplement a Sony DVP-S3000 from 1998, because the DVP-S3000 cannot recognize DVD+R/RW/-R/RW and can't play JPEGs and MP3s. Hooked up to a Sony KV-27XBR45 NTSC tube TV via S-video & analog audio outputs. Ran picture calibration using Joe Kane's "Video Essentials" DVD.

ALSO CONSIDERED: Panasonic DVD-S29 ($63), Harman Kardon DVD 27 ($199), Pioneer DV-588A-S ($120), Sony DVP-NS50P ($69-$79)
Panasonic DVD-S29: plays DVD-RAM, more scan/slow speeds; but no custom picture settings, no TV controls on remote
Harman Kardon DVD 27: great button layout on remote, good front panel display (and can be shut off); but 3x more expensive, DVD 31 got mediocre benchmark at hometheaterhifi.com
Pioneer DV-588A-S: plays DVD-Audio, SACD & DivX, menu control buttons on player console, 5.1 channel analog outputs, very good benchmark at hometheaterhifi.com; but 2x more expensive
Sony DVP-NS50P: same as DVP-NS55P; but only available in silver - tried for 1 week

FEATURES OF THE DVP-NS55P:
+ TIME/TEXT button on remote control cycles through: Title Time, Title Remaining, Chapter Time, Chapter Remaining, CD/DVD Text, and Current Title & Chapter - effects front panel display and also turns on a brief on-screen display
+ TV controls on remote (TV source select, VOLUME +/-, but no channel select)
+ good button layout on remote control
+ customizable picture controls (MEMORY): Brightnes, Contrast, Color, Hue (+/-5)
+ customizable picture sharpening: Off, 1, 2
+ JPEG Picture Navigation - 4x4 grid
+ user selectable JPEG slideshow intervals and transition effects ("RANDOM" cycle through 15 different effects)
+ can display JPEG date
+ can rotate JPEG images on screen
+ selectable background: Black, Blue, Sony blue swirl graphic, CD-Extra jacket picture
+ displays CD Text
+ displays MP3 filename and folder name
+ 6-disc resume memory - can be turned ON/OFF
+ REPLAY skips back 10 seconds, ADVANCE fast forwards through the next 28 seconds
+ FAST PLAY/SLOW PLAY can be set from 1.4x-0.6x in 0.1x intervals, play w/sound, can be used w/ZOOM
+ SLOW1 can play w/subtitles
+ progressive/interlace button w/indicator light on player console
+ Chapter/Title/Track Picture Navigation for DVD-video & VCD - 3x3 grid
+ can display jacket picture on CD-Extra
+ screensaver (bouncing text bar "SONY DVD PLAYER") - can turn ON/OFF
+ tray lock - keeps kids from putting cookies into the DVD player
+ Program Play screens have nice layout, listing titles & chapter available on disc, also shows total time of programmed tracks
+ comprehensive and relatively coherent manual

- no simultaneous display of Title/Chapter and Time on front panel
- can't turn off front panel display
- will only recognize up to 200 folders on a JPEG/MP3 disc
- will only recognize 600 JPEG/MP3 files in a folder: AUTO mode (300 MP3s, 300 JPEGs), AUDIO mode (600 MP3s), IMAGE mode (600 JPEGs)
