Excelent player, just played everything that i put in it. I make a lot of non standards VCDs and SVCDs, with lots of diferent resolutions. Many of those dont play in others DVD-Players, like when i try to watch in a friends house. But they run fine in DVP-NS50P
Recommmended. |

died after a year of use. It will still play commercial DVDs but burned DVDs fail every time. Used to play the burned DVDs but somehow does not any more.

| Nice and slim. Fits the rest of my setup nicely. Region free out of the box in South Africa, even though is marked region 2. Look out for little round pink sticker on box indicating it's region free. Playes DVD-RW's perfectly, contrary to this report from Susanne (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.php?select=Sony+DVP-NS50P) |

An amazing player at a great price. I had a 5-disc Panasonic DVD changer that I had bought for over $200. I got it for its progressive scan and DVD-A capabilites. Then it started having errors on backups. I don't know if it was just wearing out or what, but the problem was becoming worse. So I looked for a new player. I found this sony at a very good price. It had everything the panasonic had (except the multi-disc and the DVD-A capabilites--I never used the multi-disc feature, anyway).
I set up the Sony and was blown away by picture the picture quality right out of the box. I saw details I had never before seen on my other DVD player. And this player was about 1/3 of the price. I am very satisfied with this player. The picture rivals or beats the picture quality from players three to four times its price. It loads DVD-Rs far more quickly and does not have the artifact/freezing problem my panasonic had. I do miss my DVD-A's but it seems like a small sacrifice for the far better performance in all the other areas (and cost savings!). |

I've tried a number of different DVD players trying to get one to work with DVD+R DL (Memorex media). Looks like I FINALLY found one that will work. Only complaint is that with certain disks it seems to take a LONG time to determine that it's a DVD and is OK to play. (I've not timed it, but seems like 30-60 seconds) I can live with that though as long as it consistently is able to read the media.

Reviews here and on Amazon.com made me wonder whether this DVD player would be fully compatible with DVD-R and DVD+R as advertised. So far it seems both formats work flawlessly. My experience is limited to ISO files burned with Apple Disc Utility under OS 10.3.9 using a Pioneer DVR-109 (which means I am using Patchburn), and a few titles on TDK DVD+R media burned with a Lite-On 1673S. Media I have tried so far include: Verbatim DVD-R 16x Certified, TDK DVD+R 8x (from Costco), and Fujifilm DVD+R 8x (possibly made by CMC Magnetics).
The player was purchased to replace a Samsung DVD-M101 which reacted to the slightest scratches by skipping entire chapters or not playing at all. I haven't seen any reaction to disc damage on this Sony, though Netflix hasn't sent me any deeply damaged discs lately and my own collection has no scratches, so I can't say for certain how well the Sony performs in this regard.
The only feature I wish it had is analog outputs for the 5.1 channel Dolby Digital Surround. Apparently it requires a receiver with a digital decoder, not an ordinary analog 5-channel receiver like mine.
This is a decent and reasonably inexpensive DVD player that, so far, does what it says it does. |

| I bought this Sony DVP-NS50P player after finding my month-old Panasonic DMR-E55 DVD-R home video recorder wouldn't play any kind of home-made DVD+ discs (DVD+R or +RW or +R/DL), only DVD-minus-R and DVD-RAM. I wanted to see if my new Lite-On burner could really make DVD+R DL dual-layer discs. It all worked, the burner made good dual-layer discs that played on the PC and played fine in this Sony player also (actually the Cyberlink software PC player choked on some DL discs which then played fine in the Sony player). It also plays the DVD-R discs made on the home Panasonic recorder (and subsequently copied on the Lite-On burner), and it plays music CD-Rs and video CD-Rs (or at least the ones I tested). I bought this one at the store (too impatient to get good online prices, oops!). For the same price they had a Philips that couldn't pass-through DTS soundtracks, and a Toshiba that could play DTS sound but not any DVD-minus discs, only DVD+ sorts of discs, so this was the only one that seemed to have both capabilites. After only a week of checking it out it seems to be a nice middle-of-the-road unit with a few thoughtful extra touches on the remote control and the "custom setup" screens. Not a Rolls-Royce DVD player, perhaps, but it sure beats out those $40 players at WalMart. :-) |

| Great performance for the price. It could use a digital optical port, but that's about the only thing worth mentioning. |
