I have had this player for almost 2 years now and it plays just about everything that I throw at it - I swore that it would play my socks if I could manage to get them in tray, and I've been exceedingly happy with th eplayer.....

....up until just today. I was disappointed to see in a previous rating, that it did not play DVD+R, DL. The commenter stated that he did not try it with the DVD-ROM bitsetting. when I saw that, I figured that I wil make sure to set that bit and that it should work - well it doesnt.

all that leaves is the possibility and hope that it will play MINUS dual Layer media - we'll have to wait and see till I get some -R DL media and try.

Very disappointed that it doesnt play it and that my cheapo RCA DCR212N did play this.

Had this player for over a year, works great. Plays all my DVD-R and DVD+R discs. I haven't come across a VCD or an SVCD that it couldn't play. Does NOT play DVD+R DL discs. The first layer plays fine but when it gets to layer 2, it locks up. This, however, is not with the DVD-ROM bitsetting; i have not tried setting it to DVD-ROM.

I bought this DVD player about 2 years ago at Target. I think I paid around $50 US dollars for it. I have backed up my entire DVD collection on different brands of media and it is has played every DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW I have burned to!! (I would like to comment on some of the previous negative comments left by other consumers. Most all of them complain about choppy, pixelated images, skipping issues, and inadvertently assume its the the DVD player that is at fault. Let me tell you know, those problems were related to crummy, cheap, defective media. They probably went to Wal-Mart and saw a "Clearance" price of $20 dollars for a 50 pack of DVD-R's and bought them. You get what you pay for. Cheap or poorly manufactured media that you see for sale at a unbelievably good price is going to skip, stutter, pixelate toward the end of the disc! If it will even play at all! How good of a deal is it, if you can't even use any of them at all? ) I recommend getting this DVD player to anyone that wants a good solid DVD player.

Burned over 50 dvd x copy express movies. Played all disks with no problems - including disney one's. Used the cheapest dvd-r's from newegg.com (legacy 50 pk for 34.00 delivered). I had about 6 x copy movies that would not play on my sony dvp ns400d. I took those 6 to my local electronic's store and the sony dvp ns425p played them all with out any problems. So i bought the dvp ns425p and i'm happy to say that is plays all my x copy movies.

I picked this unit up at Sears for $79.99 about two weeks ago. So far I haven't had any problems or complaints. I primarily bought this for playing backup dvds and so far it's played everything I have thrown at it. Memorex + and -r, TDK + and -r and also Sony + and -r all burned using Lite-On 811s.

Unit also plays mp3's recorded to Verbatim cd-r. Haven't yet tried mp3 on other media as of yet.

Very nice unit for the price. It has played all the DVD's I can throw at it including DVD-R -RW and +R. It has also done well with CD's and VCDs. My only complaint is with SVCDs. It breaks up video and sound almost every time. I've tried different media and record speeds when making the SVCDs with no improvement. I'd give it a near perfect score if it would behave with SVCD.
Since not, then I can only give it a 7 and will consider returning it.

I only bought this DVD player to play my backed up DVD-R's. I brought the unit home. Tried three of my worse DVD's and they didn't play. I then tried my best back ups and found out that none of my DVD-R's played on this unit. My Playstation 2 has better playback than this. I burnt the DVD-R's using a Dual Format 8X I/O Magic DVD burner w/ DVD Xcopy Xpress onto Maxwell 4X DVD-R and Memorex 4X DVD-R. These discs play flawlessly on my PS2( only problem being that some, even commercial, DVD's don't play on the PS2 so I decided to buy a unit that would play them all.

Bottom line: If you want a unit to playback your Xcopy DVD-R's don't buy this. Who know's it may play commercial DVD's well but I didn't keep it long enough to find out.

Purchased at Best Buy as an "Open Box" item for $80.99. It replaced a CyberHome unit that 'smoked' the power supply after 8 months use.

This unit is FAR superior to the Apex (currently have)or CyberHome (that died). So far it has played every DVD I have made using a Sony 510 external DVD writer. It plays flawlessly DVD-R's from CompUSA (1x), TDK and Fry's no-name brand (4x). Plays them whether recored at 1x, 2x, or 4x. Plays TDK and Memorex DVD+R recordings (4x) and Memorex DVD+RW's as well.

This is a great little machine and since I have a Sony TV, it's remote controls some functions on my TV.

The best DVD player I have ever purchased!!!

Picked one up at Sears today. With VCD, SVCD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW authored with ULead Movie Factory 2.0 everything played, no problems. Capture was with Happaugue PVR-350 using bundled WinTV2000 software. Media was burned with Nec ND-1300A. VCD's and SVCD's were imation and memorex brand CD-R and CD-RW. DVD-R and DVD+R were Ritek brand. DVD+RW was Memorex and DVD-RW was TDK. Finally, a Sony player that plays pretty much everything. Excellent progressive scan images with composite out. Cons are no audio optical out only coaxial (for $40 more, add optical on the next model up)and no zoom. This will replace my Apex AD800 progressive scan model (buggy with media burned at higher speeds). I rather pay the extra $$ for this player than to buy another Apex or made in China brand.

The player hasn't yet met a disc it wouldn't play, of the CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW variety. My only complaint is the lack of a ZOOM feature. The deck remembers disc locations for up to six discs, which I've found very useful!

Used Nero and a Lite-on LDW-811S to burn SVCD, VCD, DVD-R, DVD+R all works perfect. Had an Apex AD-1225 and it started skipping after a month or so. Brought it back and bought this. Excellent buy! I bought it because of DVD-R+R support.

Bought this unit specifically for use with DVD X-Copy and Platinum burned back ups. My prog-scan Samsung was awful at playing these. I also had an APEX changer that would play them, but with annoying glitches.

This unit is superb for dvd-r, dvd-rw, dvd+r and dvd+rw playback. I have tried eight different brands of media (three dvd-r, one dvd-rw, three dvd+r and one dvd+rw) with nary a hiccup. It plays everything I throw at it.

This unit has even gotten my wife's seal of approval (who is very picky about dvd playback). She was ready to completely scrap the use of any backups until we got this unit.

i read the reviews of this player and was reluctant to purchase it. i had a $25 gift card from sears and went there to look. they had this player for $99 and bought it. i tore open the box and help my breathe while i inserted a dvd+r/-r. i am pleased to say both +/- worked w/out any problems.
i burned to the following dvd media. tdk dvd-r,compusa-r,fuji+r, and plextor+r. i used dvd shrink to rip the dvd and roxio to burn on my plextor dvd burner.
i will try dvdrw next to see if it will play.

Comments:
This was my first DVD player, because my kids were getting sick and tired of playing DVDs on my computer.

The first one (DVP-NS425P)I got had what I considered to be serious playback problems.

While playing various DVD disks, it did not play the video smoothly, but would stop for a fraction of a second at random places during the film, before continuing smoothly. This happened several times while playing the same disk. When I scan back past the spot where this happened, and then replay the same section again, it did not happen again. But it would happen again at a different spot, and when I scan back and replay again, the same thing happened; it played fine.
Another way to describe the problem is, that the disc seems to "stutter" at random spots. These are never the same spot on the individual disks. It happened with almost every disk I played. I have only played movie disks, that I own or rent. I have not played any DVD -R, -RW, +R or +RW disks.
The last time this happened was with a brand new DVD disk, fresh out of the box.

Thinking that I just had a faulty player, I went back to the store to exchange it for a new one. Unfortunately the new one does exactly the same thing. Except it does it worse. The random stops are now much longer.

As far as I am concerned, this is a bad DVD player. On top of that, SONY tech support has been unhelpful and outright incompetent.

Not sure why others have complained about this player. I rip using dvd shrink 2.3, burn with RecordNow DX on my DRX-510UL and every disc that couldn't play on my Panasonic RP-56 has worked so far. I am using Ritek and Princo DVD-R and DVD+R media.

For those who have problems, I wonder what software you are using to rip and burn, that's probably your problem.

Progressive scan is excellent on my 53" Hitachi HDTV.

I highly recommend this player for those who have Sony burners.

My only wish is that this player had an optical out for sound. It only has coax.

Used this forum to review $100 or less players. My first player was a first generation Sony (model S3000). Still works, and love it. But, it doesn't play any recordables. Have had a few bargain brands (Apex, Daewoo), but am disappointed with the video quality and playback. Especially the Apex.

After wading through the pros and cons, decided to return to my Sony roots, and am very happy. Picture quality and playback of retail DVDs is great. Also, the speed of chapter changes and the fluidity of the fast-forward and reverse is also nice.

Every authored DVD-R I have created has played great. I've used Sony (2X), Verbatim (2X), and Ritek (4X) media without a problem. Software used: Nero (both ISO and DVD-Video modes), and DVD Shrink 2.3-3.1. I've also used Sonic MyDVD. All discs burned on a Pioneer A05.

I have not been able to evaluate the progressive scan. But, there is a button for it on the front of the player to avoid trapping yourself with a PS signal on a non-PS monitor.

Due to my experience, I would recommend this to anyone who wants a solid "retail DVD" player, and also those who want to play custom/copied DVD-R media.

Unit was purchased to view DVD+R & DVD+RW movies burned with DVD XCopy on a Philips DVD burner. The original movie DVD played perfectly, but the burned +R/RW copies would not read. The unit played burned MP3 CD's flawlessly, but a burned MP3 DVD+RW again would not read. I believe the manual stated it does not support packet writing and may be at issue my the Philips burner. In all other respects, I was happy with it, but it fails in my specific application.

All around a good looking player. thin and progressive scan for $99.99 at good guys stereo.
problem is, it advertises that it plays dvd-r and in my experience it doesn't. I tried several dvds (copies of originals I own.) even burned at 1x it would skip too frequently. They were cheap dvd-r discs, but still I want all or nothing. maybe i'll have better luck with a super-cheap asian model. This wasn't worth the money in the end.

maybe some people have had better luck with this player than me, but I'm going to get something else, or just use my xbox.

My xbox with samsung 616-t (modded to fit) works 100% with any dvd-r I throw at it.
I think the sony drive just isn't fast enough to read dvd-r if it has any kind of hickup and can't read something right the first time.
The discs used were perfectly clean and brand new. burned only minutes earlier from an image of a commercial dvd-5 (nothing really changed except removing css).
They would skip even at 1x. this dvd player will be a return. stick with a modified xbox drive.

Bought today at Best Buy. The first DVD-R I throw in it (Princo) " Can not play disc"

3rd DVD-R I put in (TDK's) Worked fine.

The box advertises that it plays DVD-R's and it doesn't. I just have a low tollerance for False Advertisement.

This will be returned.

P.S. I put all 3 of those disc's in my 4 year old Sony DVP-S530D and all played fine.

Go figure....

I'm gonna go buy the DVP-NC665P like I should have in the first place

This DVD player is great. Just picked it up last night and so far it's played everything I threw in there. I had a bunch of DVD-Rs that would start skipping real bad at the end in my old GE player and this one plays them flawlessly. It even plays one that has skipped on every other DVD Player I've put it in, and plays it without a hitch. Plays VCDs well too. The picture looks great... can't wait till I can get a digital TV and use the progressive scan. I like the remote, unfortunately it's not 100% compatible with my RCA TV, even though there's a code for RCA in the manual. I can turn the TV on and adjust the volume, but I can't change channels or switch it to input. Don't know if it will handle DVD-RWs but the box says it will, and as well as it does the -Rs, I'm betting it will work fine. I like the menu system too, but that might just be because the menus on my GE were awful. I was gonna go for the slightly cheaper 325 model but for like 10 bucks more you get progressive scan and a few other features. One thing I miss is zoom, but I guess I can live without it. Oh, and the scan and slow motion are very smooth even on DVD-Rs. Not quite so smooth in reverse though. All in all this is a great player at a great price and I highly recommend it. Would give it a 10 but I haven't tried enough stuff on it to say it's perfect yet.

DVD-R Media: Accu 4x (they're pretty crappy, I'm switching to Ritek)
Burned On: SONY DRU500A 2.0f firmware
Ripped/Burned with: DVD Shrink (awesome!) and Nero 5.something
